William Underwood Ailes--What's the truth?

Seen a lot of web pages and e-mail traffic indicating William Underwood Ailes (and his father William) were born in the U.S.(PA.) Has anyone out there have actual facts to this? IAW "Portrait and Biographical Record of Auglaize, Logan and Shelby Counties Ohio....William Underwood Ailes, in company with two brothers, emigrated to this country from Wales prior to the Revolutionary War. They operated a tannery on Long Island, where the city of Brooklyn now stands, and after its destruction by the British, [they] moved to New Jersey. There [Moses Hoffman Ailes] was born in 1792..."

Anybody got any factual data contradicting this book? If not, then a lot of people have incorrect data floating out there!

Aills/Ailes of Lewis County, Kentucky

Aills descendant/researcher, Nance Shaw, made a trip to Kentucky this summer and obtained copies of many records regarding the Aills of Lewis County. Amongst other things, she got a copy of an 1813 gift deed from Ann Shackleford to her grandson John Aills. Also, a complete copy of the 1819-1822 lawsuit of Richard Aills, et al vs. John Aills and Samuel Cummings.

Nance provided me with copies of many of the records she obtained, and I transcribed or abstracted what she sent me, including complete transcripts of the Ann Shackleford gift deed and the 1819-1822 lawsuit.

The lawsuit was abstracted and posted online years ago, but that abstract, dated as 1822, was incomplete and left out Zachariah/Zaccheus Aills who was also named in the lawsuit as one of the children of Molly Shackleford and William Aills. The full transcript is most interesting and really tells the whole story.

If any one wants a copy of the the transcripts, or other information, e-mail either Nance Shaw or myself.

Tarney Smith
mtss915@sbcglobal

Nance Shaw
nance7@earthlink.net
In 1880 Census, Hocking county, Ohio, there is a William Ailes, age 17 enumerated with Jesse Deen, Farmer. By 1900 there is Saviss Ailes (female, I believe her name should be Sarisa), she is 35 and widowed. Her 2 sons, Frank age 13 and Jesse age 11 are with her, and they are still in Hocking County, Starr Township, Ohio. I believe Sarisa was the widow of William Ailes. By the 1910 Census, Frank AILS is 23 and in Franklin County, Ohio (Columbus), and by 1920, Frank ALLE is 35 and married to Laura, 4 children Alma, James, Claudia and Frankie, and they are still in Franklin County, Ohio.
If anyone is researching this line, please post a reply here, or write to me personally at Joyceschatz@aol.com

Or if you could point me to where you got acopy of the deed I would appreciate that.
Thank you

Hi Joyce,
If you haven't had a personal answer to this post, maybe I can help. I think you may have papers on James Lewis Aills who was born in Lewis Co., KY and died in 1917 in Columbus, Ohio. That's the only date of death I have for him.
Could you possibly scan the documents and send them to me at San66Zen@aol.com? There may be information that would help the members of the Aills list.
Thanks, Sandra

Hi Tony,
I have never been able to break down the brick wall on my James Wesley Aills. There is now an Aills/Ailes mail list on Rootsweb. I'm going to ask on the list if anyone has any data that could possibly lead to more information on the child whose tombstone you have. We have several members who research the Ohio Ailes/Aills and they might have some ideas.
Please let me know if you find something and thanks for asking again. You might want to post a query on the Aills message board too.
Sandra

I read Martha's obit in the Delta Herald and Times and it was different from the one you posted. I am going to make it a priority to go to the Cincinnati Historical society and research this there. Someone must know what to do with little Thomas' tombstone (he was only 2)

Hi Tony, Since we began discussing little Thomas in Jan 2004 a mail list has been created on Aills on Rootsweb. I asked on the list if anyone knew anything about little Thomas. I have had several inquiries from members of the list who descend from Ohio Ailes/Aills and they are asking for more information, thinking he could be connected to their family. Would you refresh my memory as to what you know and how you came to have possession of the tombstone.
You are welcome to browse the Aills mail list for their inquiries and you are welcome to mail me at San66Zen@aol.com. Maybe we can find out something from those Ohio Ailes/Aills descendants. I hope so.
Thanks, Sandra

Walker Ailes

Walker Ailes had four, maybe five, children that lived to be adults. His son, Martin L., was my gggrandfather. As far as I can tell his son, George, was never married. I believe that his daughter, Ackland, never married as well. His daughter, Martha, married John Hudgins. Mary Jane Ailes, who may or may not have been his daughter, married James W. Reynolds. I do have reasons to believe that Walker had a granddaughter in Mississippi at the time of his death. I don't who the child belonged to.

Martin, my gggrandfather, married Nancy McKinnon. They lived in Union County, where he died. His five daughters lived there, and many of their descendents are still living there today. Do you think that you descended form Martha or Mary Jane. Unless Walker had another child that I don't know about, these are about the only possible links. However, for Walker to have a granddaughter in Mississippi, one of his children had to be the parent. Maybe there is your link.

If you could send me some names, your parents, grndparents, etc., I may be able to tell you more.

If you would like to email me directly, my address is Mhw62747@aol.com

Marlene

Re: Stephen S. Ailes Sr. Jr.

Jacie: You seem to have done some thorough research on the Ailes family. I am a great-granddaughter of John Cleaver Ailes, born 30 Nov 1843 in Zanesville, OH, son of Samuel and Amanda Ailes. It looks like his ancestors were the Stephen Ailes Sr. & Jr. mentioned in your posting.

Amos and Stephen Ailes - Washington County, PA

In researching Daniel Gorman I came across a land deed where he sold his land to Amos Ailes (in the presence of Stephen Ailes) in March, 1812.

This was in Pike Run, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

If you are researching Amos or Stephen Ailes and have come across information about any Gormans in that time period, I'd appreciate you forwarding the information to me!!

Thank you!
