I am looking for a woman named HILDA AINSCOUGH. She would have been born around 1924, baptised at All Saints, Hindley, Lancashire, England. She was a penpal to my mother, DOROTHY SIODLA, from Berea, Ohio, U.S.A. They wrote to each other during World War II. I have letters that Hilda wrote to Dorothy dating 1942.
I also have a photograph of Hilda during that time frame. Can anyone help me?
Thank you so much.

Liverpool Ainscoughs

My gr-great grandparents James AINSCOUGH (b. 1824/25) married Isabella DEMAIN LUNT (b. ca. 1833) (both residents of Liverpool) on 8 Dec 1861 at St. Nicholas' Church, Liverpool. The marriage certificate lists their fathers as Richard AINSCOUGH (gardener) and John DEMAIN (butcher). Both are identified as being widowed. I have identified Isabella's first husband (and the father of daughter Susanna) as Peter LUNT. James and Isabella emigrated to the U.S. 1863-1864, settling first in Carroll County, Illinois, then in Lamar, Barton Co., Missouri, where they fist appear in the Federal Census of 1870.
I would like to know the identify of James AINSCOUGH's first wife and his mother, as well as how he may be linked to the non-Liverpool Ainscoughs in the U.K. Would also like to connect with any other descendents of James and Isabella.

Hi Michael,

Glad to hear from you. I am most interested in hearing more about the tapestry. I had heard a tapestry existed in recent history, showing the family tree. Does it still exist? What part of France? Does it show more geneaology information than we have records of existing. It sure would be of great assistance to have that information.

It would be nice to know of the history of the tapestry. Who wove it, what date it became in existance, and the info that it contains.

Thanks for your message. I needed to hear that my info on France was correct.

Junebug

Hi June
Good to hear from you and I am sorry to hear your sad news. The Ainscough Tapestry sounds fascinating and no I have never heard of it before. Perhaps you could ask Michael for more information??
A French link is of course possible plus we need to remember that it is highly likely there were many Ainscough families probably with a range of origins too.
I shall do my best to find out more about this Tapestry - will blog your query when I get a moment.
take care and keep in touch.
B

Hi Barbara,

I am sorry but I have gone back to work after the death of my mother, husband, and long illness. This has inhibited my work on history of Ainscough. I have been watching internet to see the work you have been doing and others' comments on the subject. The bottom line is that I still am a firm believer that there is a connection to Normandy, France.

Received a message recently from MichaelAinscough42 that he had also been told that the Ainscough "tapestry" that contained the family tree also showed roots in France. Have you heard of this also? I would like to know more about this tapestry if you are familiar with this.

Thank you,

JunebugR

We are related. I haved talked to your grandmother Theresa and my cousin Brian in Florida. I have a christmas picture with my cousin Terry, Alfred, Timothy, and little Mark, with me and my brothers and sisters taken at Aunt Theresa's home., it is very faded but my dad said he will give it to me. It was taken before my family left Phildelphia to move first to Pennsacola, FL, and then later to Barstow, CA where our van broke down. My mom died shortly thereafter in a car accident and a few yrs later we moved to Sonoma County, California.

I would love to hear from you! Are you Alfred John Ainscoe?

My mom was Edith Loretta Ainscoe who married Andrew Baback. I am June Baback by birth but somehow everyone started to call me Sue or Susan (from a boy named Sue by artist Johnny Cash in Florida and the name stuck. My dad called me Sissy as I was sister to my eldest sibling, then friends started with just Sue or Susan and somehow my name got changed before we got to the Mohave Desert.

My email address is Rddrgan@ Aol.com

I have tried mapping the family genealogy from your side but my cousin Brian or my Aunt Theresa never sent me anything back. The genealogy online has privacy filtering and can't be viewed by anyone else but I would sure like to know. I don''t even have Theresa's info at all. Who her parents where or her maiden name.

You might ask them that it would be nice if I had there genealogy too. I have tried and failed to give the hints.

Relative in Healdsburg, Sonoma Co., CA

Hi,
James Ainscough is the son of Thomas and Ellen Ainscough. He was baptised on 4 April 1833 at Wigan. I am a descendant of Thomas and Ellen through another son, Thomas, who was born on 6 November 1836 at Westleigh, Lancs although some of the census entries say Wigan or Haigh. Both Thomases were also boatmen - on the barges (flats), probably hauling coal.
Thomas senior married Ellen Gibson at Upholland, Lancs on 15 Jan 1827 and they had 10 or 11 children that I know of. Thomas's parents were John Ainscough and Ann Finch who married at Leyland on 16 May 1792. They had 10 children that I know of and John was a crofter at marriage.
I have a little more information should you want it.
Barbara

Thanks...any definite evidence linking the 2 names (Ansgot = Ainscough)would be great. Ive checked the Conqueror pages on Wiki already - thankyou. The Lincolnshire Ayscough families - of which there were many knights (fees) did become ardent protestants during the Lutheran era in Henry VIII time. However us lancashire Ainscoughs remained devout Catholics - many still are today - interesting!
Im blogging all things Ainscough here, and Im keen to find out more: http://ainscough-familyhistory.blogspot.com/

Also eel free to add to Ainscough on wikipedia - lots of people are adding info and its building up a nice picture - we dont have anything on the Normandy link yet - apart from your contribution which Jeff A forwarded to me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ainscough

Hi Barbara Iam presently working on Ainscough lineage and connection to Normandy, France. Ainscough is on my father's side. But I have already linked 2 of the knights to my mother's side - Hayden. William De Cardon and William De Falaise. Normandy was one of the main targets for Viking raids and many stayed and married and integrated into their lineage. Normandy is the protestant part of France. French hugenots are french protestants. Many later came to USA from England due to religious beliefs. Will be glad to keep you posted. Look at wiki.enclop. at William the conqueror.

HiJunebugr
this is interesting.....Im very interested in the origins of the Ainscough name and this sheds new light on a French connection. Up until now our links have led us to Scandinavian/ Viking origins. However, I have found online there is no reason why ther cannot be a Scandinavian/ French/ English link. Do you have any evidence to support the translation of the name Ansgot to Ainscough? Ansgot is quite easy to trace on the internet with many noble Mediaeval families bearing the name and also a place in France. I look forward to your reply.
Saw your message and wanted to reply. My grandmother was Jane Ainscough Ellis, her father was John who was a brother of Peter Ainscough. My grandmother married John Ellis in England and they immigrated to Shelburn, Indiana in 1906. My father, William Ellis was then born 3 mos. later.
I have recently begun the Ainscough part of my family tree. Jane's daughter, Elizabeth, had my only female cousin. She is also participating in my search. Would be interested in any info you might have. My family tree is named Ellis at Ancestry. Thanks. June Ellis

Ainscough is a french hugenot name. When William the Conqueror invaded England, he brought his army of knights. These knights from Normandy were given land for their effort during the invasion and were placed as his head of government in each shire. Wiki encyclopedia has info on a plaque placed in a cathedral in Normandy before leaving for England. This plaque has a list of knights. There is 2 knights listed as "Ansgot" which would have been french spelling for Ainscough. Normandy was the protestant part of France. French hugenot meant French protestant.

hi
Ive uncovered the following about the origin of the name Ainscough......now also on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ainscough

It is thought that the name is derived from the Norse words "ask skog". The o is pronouced as oo (food) even now in Norway and Sweden—thus Askoog, Old English (Old Norse) meaning ash tree / forest. Although other sources suggest that Aiskew is a corruption of the words "Eiki Skogr" translating to Oak Wood. In Medieval English the name was pronounced - Akeskeugh.

This is also my line, Peter being my father - I'd love to hear from you - more info. about the family can be found at:
http://ainscough-familyhistory.blogspot.com

Susan Faught, Just a couple more facts. James ainscoe youngest , Francis Didn't go-to-florida-looking for her dad livedIn new york and was brought back to consohocken for burial. I was there.William and richard both died in wichita kansas. I used to write to my uncle Bill. And i'm positive that my grandpop died. And is buried in west conshohocken.James ainscoe the son of my grandpop died in-albanynew york. Edith, and also mary died locally too. mary spent some time on the west coast but came back towards the end.Robert ainscoe also died here . He lived behind us in Swedeland ,pa.My mom Ethel and aunt libby also died here in pa.My aunt libby has Richard.Robert ,sandra,Buddy(in Portugal), billyand i other alive. My mom had 3- myself- james and thomas.Uncle Bill never hadny kids. Uncle bob had 2 from his first wife and 2 from second.my aunt edith had 1 black child - also betty - and james and dinky(dead). So I really think the one you found that died in nj Isn't our family. I found on Ancestry.com uk that a james aiscoe was born about 1878 and was registered in 1879. district Bury and in Lancashire greater MAnchester England. My mom always said her dad came over on a cattle ship. He sneakedaboard. He was very poor. So I can't see him coming over the normal way. They were very poor my mom whole life. When they lived in conshohocken it was right next to the rail road. I remember being there-once. There was a can of beans locked up in a china closet. THe house was really bad.So I really think who ever died in nj wasn't my grandpop. I need tpo check the cemetry records in west conshy.

Hello Susan Faught, My grandfather was james aiscoe. Married to Laura Thawley. One of their children- Ethel; was my mother.I have been searching for info about my grand pop -before he came to America. Why did he leave England- who did he leave behind and why? The spelling does pose a problem as there could be so many ways it eas spelled.Id like to see the ship anifest. Who ewas he married to before my grand mom. I don't think any of us knew he was married before. Or at least my mom never made mention of it. Richard alfred ainscoe married Edna Dunfee- 1930 in philadelphia.Daughter of clara thawley and harry dunfee.Clara was sister to my grandmom Laura. So that means he married his cousin.I never knew my grand pop lived til 1968. My mom always said he was a gentle soul. and as far as I knew he had died way before the date you gave. My mom would have kept in touch with him. I need to call my cousin Robert he is son of Libby Racich.( daughter of james and laura. Please respond

Hi Linda. As I recall, the two Ainscoughs mentioned in Ian's message - James and Thomas - living in the Durham and area were probably one and the same person. They weren't actually connected to my line of the family, but I delved into the records anyway as my curiosity was piqued! In answer to your query, I don't think James and Nancy and family are any connection to my lot - more's the pity. If I come across any info on them in my researches, I'll certainly let you know. If you want to know what I have on my Ainscoughs, my web site - www.mjra.net - has lots of information.

Cheers,

Mike
