Alexander Aitken - the "Linton Plooman"

Can anyone help me locate Alexander Aitken a part time journalist who wrote for the Peeblesshire News under the pseudonym "Linton Plooman". He wrote articles in the 1920's and 1930's about events in and around West Linton. Where was he born ? When did he die ?. Who were his parents ? He had connections with Innerleithen and Peebles and may have lived in Leith for a time. Any ideas welcome.
Oliver

Coy ' s Tr oops Fort St George in 1806, he re-enlisted February 1831,Sgt Maj Eff.Supper 1st January 1832 aged 46.

In the beginning of April, John Leyden sailed from Portsmouth, in the Hugh Inglis, where he had the advantage of being on board the same vessel with Mr Robert Smith, the brother of his steady friend, the Rev. Mr Sidney Smith. And thus set forth on his voyage perhaps the first British traveller that ever sought India, moved neither by the love of wealth nor of power, and who, despising alike the luxuries commanded by the one, and the pomp attached to the other, was guided solely by the wish of extending our knowledge of oriental literature, and distinguishing himself as its most successful cultivator. This pursuit he urged through health and through sickness, unshaken by all the difficulties arising from imperfect communication with the natives, from their prejudices and those of their European masters, and from frequent change of residence; unmoved either by the charms of pleasure, of wealth, or of that seducing indolence to which many men of literature have yielded after overcoming all other impediments. To this pursuit he finally fell a sacrifice, as devoted a martyr in the cause of science, as ever died in that of religion. We are unable to trace his Indian researches and travels with accuracy similar to that with which we have followed those which preceded his departure from Europe, but we are enabled to state the following outlines of his fortune in the East.

After a mutiny in the vessel, which was subdued by the exertions of the officers and passengers, and in which Leyden distinguished himself by his coolness and intrepidity, the Hugh Inglis arrived at Madras, and he was transferred to the duties of his new profession. His nomination as surgeon to the commissioners appointed to survey the ceded districts, seemed to promise ample opportunities for the cultivation of oriental learning. But his health gave way under the fatigues of the climate; and he has pathetically recorded, in his "Address to an Indian Gold Coin," the inroads which were made on his spirits and constitution. He was obliged to leave the presidency of Madras, suffering an accumulation of diseases, and reached with difficulty Prince of Wales Island. During the passage the vessel was chased by a French privateer, which was the occasion of Leyden’s composing, in his best style of border enthusiasm, an "Ode to a Malay cris," or dagger, the only weapon which his reduced strength now admitted of his wielding. The following letter to Mr Ballantyne, dated from Prince of Wales Island, 24th October, 1805, gives a lively and interesting account of his occupations during the first two years of his residence in India.

See : http://www.electricscotland.com/history/other/leyden_john.ht...

*********

Nor. Cal. historian ISO info on John Simpson Aitken who was a saloon owner in early Sisson (now Mt. Shasta, CA) about 1888. If someone had a connection (?) I think I could dig up his wife's name. They were not in Sisson for long, and may have been in business with a man named Douglas. Thanks for any help. Perry Sims

William Aitken of Carnwath

Does anyone have any info on the family of a William Aitken born in 1770's or very early 1780's whose wife was Helen Somerville? I have found names of 3 daughters for them so far: Elizabeth born Aug. 24, 1805, Margaret born April 30, 1808 and Isobel born July 14, 1809, all at Carnwath.

Margaret Aitken married Andrew Davidson on July 4, 1834 at Carnwath and it is this specific family I am trying to find info on. I have searched for birth records for the children of Andrew and Margaret and come up empty although I know they had at least two sons and two daughters born at Ratho in Midlothian:

Alexander Davidson born about 1836, married a Martha (possible maiden name Edmond), had at least two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret, and lived at one time at Newcastle On Tyne in England, was living at Westgate, Northumberland, England in year 1861

Helen Davidson born about 1838, married John Mitchell who was dead before April 1871, at least 3 daughters: Margaret, Elizabeth and Helen Mitchell; was living at Glasgow, Lanarkshire in year 1881 with 2 daughters and her widowed father Andrew Davidson

Margaret Davidson born about 1840, no further info yet on her

William Davidson born about 1842 at Ratho, got married in 1864 in London, England to Elizabeth Marshall who was from Saint Vigeans, Angus; eight known children: seven sons and one daughter; William and family lived at Ratho in 1871 but by 1881 had moved to Glasgow in Lanarkshire. I don't have a date of death for him yet.

Any info on this Aitken or Davidson family greatly appreciated-

Thanks from Nora

AITKEN, ANDREW, was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1824, and emigrated to Canada in 1832. In 1817 he went to Lawrence, Massachusetts, and superintended the stone-cutting for a dam and mill. The next year he went to Holyoke in the same business. In 1849 he came to California, and mined a year on Condemned Bar, American River. He then commenced teaming to the mines. In 1852 engaged in the stone and marble business, and is now the oldest established in that business on the coast. He opened a marble quarry and erected a mill at Indian Springs, El Dorado County. Mr. Aitken has been Trustee of the Fire Department and President of the Board of Delegates.
William Aitken b ~1827 Glasgow m Mary Tracy Green 10 children

Trying to trace back to William Aitken and beyond. What we know is from relatives, without much backup documentation.
William was born in 1827 in Glasgow. He married Mary Tracy GREEN and had 10 kids before immigrating to Boston, MA in 1881. His wife and at least three of the youngest kids immigrated three months later. He was naturalized in 1887 while residing in Lowell, MA. His occupation was listed as weaver. He died ~1898. Mary Tracy (GREEN) AITKEN died 1923. He and his wife, and daughter Helen AITKEN are buried in Lowell, MA.
The children we know of are: Harriet, Mary Emma, Eli, James, Helen, and William. We are related to William.
William AITKEN, Jr? B. 1874 England M. 1900 Melissa Louise AYEN D. 1957 MA. He was a musician and band leader, playing baritone, trombone, piano and more. He met his wife while performing in Maine. Melissa Lousie (AYEN) AITKEN lived to be 103 years old. They had five daughters: Helen Elizabeth, Doris Viola, Mildred, Edna Norma, Marjorie AITKEN, and one son who was stillborn or died in infancy. William and Melissa Louise (AYEN) AITKEN are buried in Lowell, MA.
James AITKEN we are told moved to Philadelphia, married Sophia ?, had five sons and one daughter (who died by falling out of her high chair).
Eli AITKEN we are told, was also a musician, met his wife in Germany, his wife was from a wealthy family that didn't approve of their plans, so they sneaked out of Germany.
Any help/advice/info to allow us to go back in time to Glasgow (William Aitkens in Glasgow seem to be like John Smiths here), or to fill out more info in the more recent parts of this family tree will be appreciated.

I have two lines of Aitken's my great grandmother's(1834) family was also Aitken. Her's was from Motherwell, daughter of George Aitken and Ann Smith, My Greatgrandfather's (1829) line begins with Robert Aitken and Janet Main(s) marriage banns of 1795 in Slamannan Midlothian, Scotland. My gggrandfather Robert and his 9 siblings : Mary, Janet, Jean James, Margaret, Thomas, David, John and Beatrix all born between 1796 and 1820. Robert's wife (my gggrandmother) Annie Aitken (1834) had 4 siblings, Jane, James, Isobella and William all born between 1834 and 1841. It's a real chore keeping these Aitken families apart in my mind or on paper. Please contact me if this rings your family chimes.

Hi

Has anyone out there have a connection to William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Lord Beaverbrook born 25th May 1879 in Canada? Family folklore has him as a relative, but I need help finding that connection, if it's there.

Beaverbrook's father was William Cuthbert Aitken, a Presbyterian minister, from Torphichen, Linlithgowshire (later called West Lothian).

Beaverbrook's mother was Jane Noble who was born about 1849 in Ontario, Canada. Her parents were Joseph Vaughan Noble, born Ireland, and Sarah McQuarrie.

Beaverbrook's Grandfather was the Robert AITKEN, d. 1875.

Beaverbrook's Great Grandfather was John AITKEN, b. c.1762, d. 1840.

Thanks
Davie Walker

BAUER - Frances Gertrude (nee Aitken). With deepest sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of our mother. She was born June 2, 1915 at Macoun, SK. She was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Fanny, her husband Robert, her brother George, daughters Georgina and Roberta and granddaughter Teri Lin. Left to cherish her memory are: daughters Linda (Bernie), Brenda (Keith) and Shirley; sons, Chester (Joy), Bob (Diane), Ken (Amy), Don (Elaine), Lorne, Larry (Lynn); 20 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren (so far); and her sister Evelyn. Frances was employed in the early years of her marriage and before, at Revenue Canada, Census Canada and Canada Post. She was very family oriented and was the matriarch of the Bauer family. She had an indomitable spirit and was very much loved and respected by her family. Her other interests were knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening, ceramics, and she loved to go shopping! We spent many hours playing her favorite game Yahtzee. She loved crosswords, and every other kind of puzzle. Her pets were very dear to her. She was filled with spunk and zest for family get togethers and had a great deal of talent for baking and cooking; especially butter tarts! Following her wishes, cremation and no funeral service. There will be a memorial gathering on Saturday, January 28 at 3:30 p.m. at the W.A. Edwards Family Centre 333 4th Ave. North (courtesy parking at Saskatoon Funeral Home).

Have you tried searching Irish records? In my search, I've found that many of the Aitkens immigrated to Ireland and then many eventually returned to Scotland after many years, meaning that many of their children would have been born and baptised in Ireland, not Scotland.
My 2xg-grandmother was Mary Ann Aitken baptised in the Scottish Church in Berwick upon Tweed in 1821. It states that she was the 5th child and 2nd daughter of James and Marie Aitken, James being a soldier. When she married in 1842 James was a Sergeant. Has anyone come across James and Marie as none of their other children were baptised in Berwick and I've not been able to trace a marriage for them or baptisms for any of their other children.
Thanks.

Hullo,

My research leads me to believe that my GGG G/F was Magnus (1) Aitken born in Linlithgow, West Lothian, (b March 30, 1770) (possibly the son of James Aitken (b April 11, 1723) and Margaret Little (m March 11, 1750).

Magnus (1) married Helen Beveridge (m Jan, 09, 1820) and had 4 or 5 sons (the records show two Williams born two years apart to this couple) and a daughter, Elisabeth. One son was again called Magnus (2) (b August 8, 1824). Sometime between 1824 Magnus (2) married Mary Ann McNaughton (1852) and moved to Victoria, Australia. They had 6 sons (including a Magnus(3)). Three appeared to move north to northern NSW and three have disappeared.

Magnus (3) and two other sons (William and James) all had a son called Magnus one of whom (Magnus(4) Wallace Aitken b1885 in Tenterfield, NSW) was my grandfather. He had a sister, Gertrude Mary Aitken (b 1883) who seems to have married a Roe Allan McKenzie in 1903 in NSW and disappeared.

Magnus(3) moved to NZ around 1900 and the family settled in an around Gisborne and Wairoa, New Zealand.

I am living back in Sydney, Australia and am keen to find branches of the family in Australia, New Zealand and Scotland.

I am hoping to trace the family of my Grandfather, they lived in Aberdeen Scotland. His full name was Alexander Elrich Whyte Aitken, he was born about 1884 and his father's name was Tom. I believe his mother had the surname of Whyte, but am not sure. He did have a sister Susan, and a brother James amongst others. He also had a nephew named Keith Alexander (son of a sister). Any Aberdonians out there with help?

I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching these families.

George SKINNER married Helen AITKEN 29 July 1725 in Kinglassie, Fife, Scotland. George dies 1775 in Leslie, Fife, Scotland.

His Will states George was a Tenant in Balsilly, Fife (near Leslie) married to Helen AITKEN in favor of 4 daughters, Janet, Helen, Isobell and Betty (1741). Another daughter Agnes, of Kinross-Miln, married to William LOW was dead. His son was George SKINNER. (a George SKINNER (could be him?) married Christina FOTHERINGHAM & had a son George born Aug 15 1762 at Kinnesswood, Fife). [SC20/36/12]

I know Betty marries Arthur SCOTT around 1765-70, but have yet to find the event. They have 11 children, 3 in Portmoak, Kinross and the rest in the Cults-Cupar, Fife, Scotland area.

Kind regards,
Bill Cotgreave
billcot@optonline.net
Long Island, New York, USA

1807 Indenture, Philly, mentioning Robert Aitkin

I have a transcript of an 1807 indenture between Thomas H. Fairbairn, druggist of Baltimore, and Robert Haydock, plumber in Philadelphia, involved property that I believe to be the present-day 87 S. Strawberry St., Philadelphia. The original just arrived in our antiques shop and I thought some Aitkin descendants/researchers might like the info contained in it, as it mentions James Huston of Philadelphia, whose daughter Martha married Robert Aitkin.
I have the 1881 Census for Scotland and will do look-ups if anyone wants them. I need place born and approxamate dates. Remember there are many with the same given names, so I need as much info as you can give. Asking for just a William Aitken would be almost impossible.

Kate

Andrew Aitken of Airdrie/Lanarkshire/Scotland, died 1897

I am trying to find any descendants of Andrew Aitken, "Sheriff substitute" in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland in the late 1800's. He married twice I believe and had 10 children, including my great grandmother. I have seen correspondence from family members "M.W. Aitken" on Union St. in Stirling, from the early 1900's, and have I believe several family pictures. The following data was gleaned from distant family and I cannot vouch for its accuracy.

Andrew Aitken, of the Airdrie/Coatbridge area of Lanarkshire, Scotland, died Sept. 1897 per a copy of a tribute article. His son James Aitken had been present in 1893 when a portrait of Andrew was donated to Airdrie in commemoration of his work in establishing the first free library in Scotland.

Andrew had married Susan McKenzie Forbes around 1834, and had five children - William, Robert, Andrew, James, and John (who then had children Daisy and Andrew). Susan died in 1856; Andrew then married Jane Williamson around 1858 or 1859. They had five children - Mary, Jane, Lizzie (mother of Leo), Henry, and Isabel. Jane Aitken married my great grandfather Dundas Morley Simpson and they emigrated to America, having 6 children.

In the 1940's or 1950's my grandmothers cousin, Daisy Aitken, still lived in Airdrie area. My grandmother, Jean Williamson Simpson Pence Josel, corresponded with family in England and Scotland until her passing in the 1950's. I would like to correspond and can provide more info to any interested parties - please email me. Thanks!

I'm looking for information regarding my scottish great grandparents. James Aitken was born on the 18th of March, 1891, and Jemima Smith Halley was born on the 18th of January, 1895. Jemima was born in Glasgow, and I'm guessing that James was born there too. Jemima's siblings were William, James, Archie, Annie, Hannah, and Jenny.

Now that I think about it, my dates might be slightly off. I remember my great gran dying in 1998, which would have made her 103, but I remember her dying at the age of 99.

Regardless, if anyone has any informaiton on them please feel free to contact me.

Cheers,
Kim.
