Hi Kelly, I have these three Aitken brothers in my tree. Their mother Christina Traill was the sister of my great grandfather. I wondered what became of them. Their mother died in 1916 - her three sons were David Aitken b. 1911, John Traill Aitken b. 1912 and James Harley Aitken b. 1914. Their father David died in 1941 aged 67. The sons must have emigrated before then. Please contact me so we can take discussions forward off the message board.
Thanks

I am researching my partner, John Hunter's (from Irvine!) family tree. His Gt Gt Grandfather was Andrew Hunter, born c1854 (son of John Hunter and Mary Hamilton)who married Agnes Aitken (dau of James Aitken and Margaret Aird) in 1876 at Ayr. Does this connect to any of your Hunters?Aitkens?

Hi Brenda, do you know who the parents were for the James Davidson who was born about 1811 at Lasswade? I wonder if he is a brother to my Andrew Davidson born abt. 1809-1811. Do you have a date of death for your James? How many children did he and Margaret have? Do you have any marriage info for James and Margaret? Who was the mother of your Margaret born 1869- (you think her father was 1842 James)?

Thanks from Nora

Don't have much info but might ring a bell with someone :)

Catherine McIntosh (born 1883 Hamilton Barracks Lanarkshire) Married John Aitken (born 1881 Lanarkshire) on 11th October 1907 in Glasgow. John was the son of Alexander Aitken and Mary McLellan and was a coal miner. They had 4 children Alexander (born c1908) John (born c1911) Edward Rittman and Elizabeth.
Not sure if the children where born in Scotland but think more than likely they were born in South Africa. John died in 1924 in South Africa and Catherine re-married to a William Hannay (he died 1942 South Africa)
Anyone have any connection to these names ?
Thanks
Fiona

I've found out a bit more on Aitken. His name was John Bowden Aitken, born Denny on 13 April 1887. I've found what I believe to be a match in the Scotland census, but cannot be sure, although it's promising listing an Alexander Bowden as a boarder. Perhaps John's middle name is a family name (e.g., mother's maiden name).

Coy ' s Tr oops Fort St George in 1806, he re-enlisted February 1831,Sgt Maj Eff.Supper 1st January 1832 aged 46.

In the beginning of April, John Leyden sailed from Portsmouth, in the Hugh Inglis, where he had the advantage of being on board the same vessel with Mr Robert Smith, the brother of his steady friend, the Rev. Mr Sidney Smith. And thus set forth on his voyage perhaps the first British traveller that ever sought India, moved neither by the love of wealth nor of power, and who, despising alike the luxuries commanded by the one, and the pomp attached to the other, was guided solely by the wish of extending our knowledge of oriental literature, and distinguishing himself as its most successful cultivator. This pursuit he urged through health and through sickness, unshaken by all the difficulties arising from imperfect communication with the natives, from their prejudices and those of their European masters, and from frequent change of residence; unmoved either by the charms of pleasure, of wealth, or of that seducing indolence to which many men of literature have yielded after overcoming all other impediments. To this pursuit he finally fell a sacrifice, as devoted a martyr in the cause of science, as ever died in that of religion. We are unable to trace his Indian researches and travels with accuracy similar to that with which we have followed those which preceded his departure from Europe, but we are enabled to state the following outlines of his fortune in the East.

After a mutiny in the vessel, which was subdued by the exertions of the officers and passengers, and in which Leyden distinguished himself by his coolness and intrepidity, the Hugh Inglis arrived at Madras, and he was transferred to the duties of his new profession. His nomination as surgeon to the commissioners appointed to survey the ceded districts, seemed to promise ample opportunities for the cultivation of oriental learning. But his health gave way under the fatigues of the climate; and he has pathetically recorded, in his "Address to an Indian Gold Coin," the inroads which were made on his spirits and constitution. He was obliged to leave the presidency of Madras, suffering an accumulation of diseases, and reached with difficulty Prince of Wales Island. During the passage the vessel was chased by a French privateer, which was the occasion of Leyden’s composing, in his best style of border enthusiasm, an "Ode to a Malay cris," or dagger, the only weapon which his reduced strength now admitted of his wielding. The following letter to Mr Ballantyne, dated from Prince of Wales Island, 24th October, 1805, gives a lively and interesting account of his occupations during the first two years of his residence in India.

See : http://www.electricscotland.com/history/other/leyden_john.ht...

*********

Hi Kerry, I have a bit of information of a Hugh Aitken a great great uncle born Dunedin N.Z.in 1867 and died on 22 aug 1928 in Bendigo Victoria. He had 3 brothers william John and James. His parents were John and Ellen ( Mc Neil ) married in Dunedin on 23 Jan 1864. I don't know if this helps if so we may be relatives. As they settled in the Bendigo and Gippsland area (Neerim).
Best of luck from Anthony ( Tony )Aitken

Alexander Aitken - the "Linton Plooman"

Can anyone help me locate Alexander Aitken a part time journalist who wrote for the Peeblesshire News under the pseudonym "Linton Plooman". He wrote articles in the 1920's and 1930's about events in and around West Linton. Where was he born ? When did he die ?. Who were his parents ? He had connections with Innerleithen and Peebles and may have lived in Leith for a time. Any ideas welcome.
Oliver

William Aitken of Carnwath

Does anyone have any info on the family of a William Aitken born in 1770's or very early 1780's whose wife was Helen Somerville? I have found names of 3 daughters for them so far: Elizabeth born Aug. 24, 1805, Margaret born April 30, 1808 and Isobel born July 14, 1809, all at Carnwath.

Margaret Aitken married Andrew Davidson on July 4, 1834 at Carnwath and it is this specific family I am trying to find info on. I have searched for birth records for the children of Andrew and Margaret and come up empty although I know they had at least two sons and two daughters born at Ratho in Midlothian:

Alexander Davidson born about 1836, married a Martha (possible maiden name Edmond), had at least two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret, and lived at one time at Newcastle On Tyne in England, was living at Westgate, Northumberland, England in year 1861

Helen Davidson born about 1838, married John Mitchell who was dead before April 1871, at least 3 daughters: Margaret, Elizabeth and Helen Mitchell; was living at Glasgow, Lanarkshire in year 1881 with 2 daughters and her widowed father Andrew Davidson

Margaret Davidson born about 1840, no further info yet on her

William Davidson born about 1842 at Ratho, got married in 1864 in London, England to Elizabeth Marshall who was from Saint Vigeans, Angus; eight known children: seven sons and one daughter; William and family lived at Ratho in 1871 but by 1881 had moved to Glasgow in Lanarkshire. I don't have a date of death for him yet.

Any info on this Aitken or Davidson family greatly appreciated-

Thanks from Nora

She's probably not the same person I'm trying to track down, but I guess I've gotta follow every lead.
My father recently found out he was adopted, and his real birth certificate reads that his mothers name is Agnes Aitken. She gave birth to him in Scotland, November 1955.
If you have any information on the Aitken family, or if you could let me know where to find any, that would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Michelle

Max Aitken Lord Beaverbrook

My mother, sadly no longer with us, used to talk about the family tie to Beaverbrook. I have done some research and found that my mother's birthplace was Torphicen and searches have shown that many Aitken families lived ther. My grandmother was an Aitken, again from Torphicen. My great Grandfather's death certificate shows the following...John Aitken whose parents were William Aitken and Helen Aitken (ms Tervet). My grandfather died April 9 1945 aged 80 years.Max Aitken was born in Canada of parents William cuthbert aitken and Ann Anderson. William Cuthbert was the son of Robert Aitken.
The christian names run throogh my grandmother's side of the family. I have not established where this all fits but I feel that the family story of cousins might be true. Can anyone enlighten me?

Greetings 'cousin'. All the Aitkens from Torphichen are interconnected, and yes Lord Beaverbrook is one of them. The principal Torphichen Aitken family researcher, who has a very considerable amount of information, is Terry Stewart in Fremantle, Western Australia. You can contact him at tds@myplace.net.au.
