Hi There,
Great to hear from you. No the house in this picture has wooden siding and lace curtains! It must have been taken in the 20's or 30's. I saw pictures of the sod house on the Glenbow website. James and Florence are much older in my picture and they are surrounded by children and grandchildren. My Great Grandfather was William( one of James's 9 siblings) and he was the Factor of all the farmlands owned by the Carron Iron Company in Scotland.( Carron was started in the 1700's and they made the first iron cannons for the Napoleonic wars!) The farm was called Roughlands and was in Stirlingshire.
Do you know anything about James and William's Father? I heard he was a factor too and worked for Lord Marjoriebanks in the West of Scotland. Also I believe he and his wife were married in Paisley Abbey, which was very posh for a working farming family back then.
Gosh this is fun and totally addictive. I've spent all day on this so far. Making my tree with over 70 people on it!
Best

Sheena

Hi Sheena,
Isn't it fun and interesting. Was the house a sod house? If so it was in Naseby Saskatchewan a smaller town near neighbouring Biggar. What was your ggrandfather's name? I did amass a lot of info last year but still need to organize in a gedcom file.It can get confusing! I can send you some info if you email me at joane@telus.net

My Great Grandfather was James Aitkenhead's Brother. I have a picture showing about 30 descendents of James's sitting outside a house that I was told was in Canada.I was given the picture by a distant cousin in Edinburgh, Jeanie Allen.
Her Father was another of James's brother called Walter.

I'm so excited to have found some relatives! My father was on only child, but previous Aitkenhead's seem to have had many children!

Sheena

I have just found out that I am a decendent of this line. If you haven't already have a look at this site, it is a rather detailed family tree of James & Margarets decendents: http://salmond.info/individual.php?pid=I7327&ged=output.....

I would be intrested to know your direct relations, I am a decendent of Isabella Aitkenhead who married William McConnell in 1841 (3rd generation).

Look forward to hearing from you.

Scotty

Wow, so your father was the baby of the family? I came across some info that said he fought and perished in the battle of Artona. True? If so that must have been very difficult for your family. Also had a hint that he was on the Australian Electoral Rolls 1903-1954.??
My uncle Walter lives in Georgia.
I am on a 14 day free trial with ancestry.com and have been very fortunate to find several relatives. They certainly were a prolific lot back then!
I Live in Port Moody, BC, just outside of Vancouver, with my husband and 2 teenage sons. We started our family in our mid-late 30's. Menopause vs. puberty! What a ride!!
Thanks again for the tip at Glenbow.
My personal email is joane@telus.net

If so, I have a picture in front of me of your husband when he was 9 years old in Feb. 1983. Mom always had these pics in her wallet.

My mother was Juanita Clements, her brother was John Joseph Aitkenhead. My name is Sharon, my brother was Thomas Alvin Clements and my father was Thomas Clifford Clements.

The village is no longer there as history has changed the landscape.
My family are from the Blantyre area most using the forst name of ROBERT including my son. I was born in East Kilbride about five miles from Blantyre. Also the name Todd was introduced into the family by one of the marriges. My Grandfather (Alfred) so the family story goes came from St Giles Edinburgh to settle in St Giles, Camberwell (London) He left London with his many brothers, who were all Galic speaking. He married Margaret Anderson, who also came from Edinburgh but spoke only English. They lived in Nunhead in South east London. He died from Cancer in 1941. Home this may be of help.

Dear Jim.

I saw your post on the Aitkenhead family looking for information. I'm a distant cousin of yours. Your grandmother Margaret Aitkenhead (maiden surname Black) was a daughter of Alexander Black & Jean Campbell of Arbroath. Jean was one of 16 Campbell children born to Andrew Campbell & Margaret Allan who lived at Maryton just outside of Montrose. I'm descended from one of Andrew & Margaret's other daughter (Jessie). I've amassed quite a lot of detail about the Campbell family and all their descendants - and I'd be delighted to share it with you.

If you want to get in touch directly my email address is:
ewan.heb@blueyonder.co.uk

Hope to hear from you soon,

best wishes,
Ewan Hebenton
Glasgow, Scotland

PS I know your birthplace well - every year I have a weeks holiday at a wee cottage in Henry Street, Kirrie!

Hi Lucy, you are right, Aitkenhead is about mile from Kirkmichael South Ayrshire on the Straiton road. All that is left is a farm a mill a few cottages and what was a huge creamery ( which closed and became the warehouse for semichem ). I was brought up in Kirkmichael and we were the only Aitkenhead family to live there for years although my parents originated from ayr. I hope this helps.

there is no town of Aitkenhead however the town of Viewpark in lanarkshire close to Glasgow has a primary school and a road with the name. The main road leading to Hampden Park Scotland national football stadium is also named Aikenhead road. The name is closley associated with the founding of free education for all in Scotland and Dumbarton castle was the seat of the Aitkenhead family, as was Kings park and Queens park areas of Glasgow. Dumbarton castle was at one time defended by three brothers; David,James and John Aitkenhead against viking invaders and remains to this day the only castle never taken by an enemy.

I doubt it. Smith is the commonest surname in Scotland, followed by MacDonald if you include McDonald with MacDonald.

Not only does Ai(t)kenhead not feature in the 'top 100' commonest surnames in Scotland it doesn't even make the 'top 100' in west central Scotland, where it is commonest.

Hi All,
I am trying to find my great (x3) grandmother Elizabeth Aitkenhead. I have her with her husband (but have not yet found the marriage!!) on the census from 1861 thru to 1881, and her birth works out as around 1827 and is shown as being withe Lambeth or Camberwell. So far i have not yet found her on 1851 or 1841 census, for sure but have a good posabilty for 1841.
Does anybody have any connections to any Aitkenheads from Surrey that can either identify my Elizabeth or failing that elimate the any others.

Thanks

Richard

Looking for any information on the Parents and family of my Grandfather, William Morrow Aitkenhead, all I have on him at this time is, that he was born at North Shields about 1872, he was married at Falmouth Cornwall 1911, on the marriage certificate, his address was given as 31 Greenhowe Terrace, Elswick New Castle upon Tyne, he was a ships cook/steward, they had 4 children, but he died at sea in 1918, 3 months before my late Father was born, though we have not been able to trace either his birth or death certificates! yet.
I have found a William (Akenhead) which could be him, on the 1881 census, aboard the Wellesey in North Shields.
His Father was shown on the marriage certificate as William Morrow Aitkenhead Master Mariner (dec). Would be delighted if I could trace any info on him and his family.
