Re: Akards of Sullivan County, Tennessee

Sheila,

My g-g-grandfather was a James Conant who is found in the 1850 census (under the name John) living in Washington County with a household that includes 71 year old woman, probably born in Pa (hard to read) named Catherine Conant. There are several other links. He was born in Dec 1815. In a book that lists "problem" Conants, ones who can't be connected with main Conant lines, there is a reference to a James Conant, son of Jonathan COnant, in Tennessee, with James having a birthdate that is 4 days off of the date I was given for my g-g-grandfather.

I do have a copy of the Akard diary reference to the marriage of jonathan Conant to Catherine Akard, and the bio of Catherine published in the book on Sullivan County Genealogy back about 1990. However, I come up short otherwise in establishing the link.

I do have several pictures of children of James Conant.

Do you want the photos?

Can I get a copy of your book?

Otherwise, is there any other "evience" available to you on the Conant-Akard connections.

The deatils are consistent with the above details. Still no documentary link though between James Conant & Jonathan Conant.

Happy New year Shelia. I hope the manuscript is going well.

In a previous reply I had described two families: the family of Catherine Akard, daughter of Jacob, who married Jonathan Conant, and then a second family of a James Conant. I know that James mother was named Catherine, was born in PA circa 1778 or 1779 and probably died in eastern TN someplace between 1850 and 1860.

Today I found a reference which puts the name Akard into the second family. James Conant had a daughter named Catherine who married Milton S. Morgan. I knew this and the dates before but no middle names I have found a listing in the Morgan genforum, not authoritative but likely looking, which asserts that Milton Stamp Morgan married Catherine Akered (spelling original) Conant.

Jacob is my 4th great-grandfather. I have worked on Jacob's descendants for several years, and will be finishing my manuscript this Fall/Winter.

The Sullivan County book was done by our local genealogical society, and we reprinted it last year, with a few copies still available.

Best wishes,
Shelia

The information that I have was given to me by my gradmother from another man whom I do not know. In what I have found, from many other resources, the Lattures were Hugenots coming from W.France, now Germany. I have very little information on where exactly they came from and am currently focusing mainly on that, as where ever the Connants were from, the Akards were close by. I would love to help you. As I am typing this, I am at work and do not have all the information in front of me. I have a HUGE ist of links on where to start your search and will contact you as soon as I can with those links. Everything that I have found, I have found on the internet for free. It's a slow process, and you have to stick to it; you will become frustrated, and I hope that I can help ease your frustration by making this a tiny bit easier. I'll contact you ASAP.

I think that what I need most at this point is some hints on where to look further. What is the source of your lore on Jacob Akard and his children? I am presently limited to that book I mentioned, stuff I find at familysearch.com, world family tree, world ancestral tree and the message boards. Much of the electronic data is obviously filtered by the common tendency to pay more attention to your ancestors than to their siblings. Where can I look next?

I'd appreciate any info you have on the Conant or Connant line as that is what maybe, I don't know for sure, leads to me.

At my local LDS Family History Center, they have a book entitled "Families and History of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Volume one 1779-1992". I forgot to copy down who exactly put it together but I believe that it was sort of a bicentennial for Sullivan County thing done by local genealogy society. Entry number 547 on pp 325-326 is on the Akard family. It says that "Jacob married Susanna Margretha Latture, daughter of Johannes Hermannus Latour (Both spellings of Latture are in the thing I am copying here) and Catherine Barbara Spickler, ca. 1770, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania." That is the extent of my documentation. Good luck and let me know about those Conants!

I only know the direct line from Jacob Akard to me, and the only information that I have on Catherine is that her mother's name is Susannah Margaretha Latture and she was born in 1778. The only other thing I have is that, in my records, Conant is spelt differently: Connant. I really have no other information. I hope that what I have given can be of some help. Do you have any information on the ancestors of Susannah M. Latture? I am unable to trace that particular line any further.

Jonathan Conant and Catherine Akard

I am seeking information and documentation on the family of Jonathan Conant and Catherine Akard. What I currently know is that Catherine Akard is born in 1778, probably in Lancaster PA. Her parents were Jacob Akard and Susanna Margrethe Latture. The family moves to Sullivan county TN by 1800. Catherine marries a man named Jonathan Conant. They have at least one son, Jacob (born ca 1819-20), who marries Matilda Emert. He may be the blacksmith named Jacob Cornant found in the 1850 census , age 30, married to a woman named Malinda or Matilda, living in Sullivan County. I am told but have not confirmed that Jonathan and Catherine had additional children as well.

Independent checks are that TN Census records show a household in Sullivan County headed by Catherine Conant in 1830 and 1840. In the 1850 census there is a Catherine Conant, age 71, born in some state other than TN, living in the household of a blacksmith named John Conant, aged 35 and born in TN. The household is in Washington County. If you change John's name to James, the county to Hawkins and add 10 years to the age of everybody but the 71 year old Catherine, you generate a household that almost perfectly aligns with a household found in the 1860 Census. This household is headed by a blacksmith named James Conant born in Tn in about 1815. I have tracked James out to the 1880 census, where we are told that his mother was born in PA.
