Bondurant marriage to Akers in Franklin Co, VA

Emily Frances BONDURANT, the daughter of Thomas BONDURANT and Jane Bonner NEBLETT, b 31 Mar 1831 in Franklin Co, VA married a man named AKERS. I found a couple who MAY be them in the 1860 census of Polk Co, MO. On the census the man's name looks like J. F. AKERS born in VA and has the occupation of Tobacconist. Does anyone know of this couple?

Ruby Talley Smith rubygem@aol.com

John Akers - Floyd County, Indiana

Hi all,

I have come across court documents that indicate John or JEHU Akers (spelled both ways in the court records), Floyd County, Indiana was convicted of a murder that occurred on 27 Nov 1834 near Greenville, Floyd County. He was indicted on 29 Apr 1835 of shooting Jacob Fredrick and brought to trial on 4 may 1835. On 6 Nov 1835 he was ordered to hang on 18 Dec 1835. He was pardoned by the Governor (still researching date on that). His wife was Isabella Mckinley (we think but have no proof). In the court case it states she was upset as she was confined to bed having just given birth.

I have searched family trees but they all state that the John Akers that marries Isabella Mckinley dies in Aug of 1835 (not documented). The court records states that he does eventually "return to Floyd" and remarries but does not list the new wife's name. All the family trees I have found show Isabella packing the kids up and heading to Iowa about Sept 1835. This apparently is oral tradition.

Do any of you have information on this John Akers? The court record is very interesting to read since it way my Ancestor Alfred Sigler who set John up!

They would be the same..I wondered why Grandmother Akers was always listed as P'simer. I guess the Pickleshimer was too long.. We have a written out family tree at my Mom's house somewhere. I think my aunt Nedra or Josephine created it back in the 70's.

Several years ago the late Earl Akers sent me a picture of an Akers riding in a cart being pulled by a large hog. I am thinking that this was a descendant of Claibourne Akers, Born 1871, Floyd Co. Ky, Died abt 1864 Van Zandt Co. TX. It was stated that the hog pulled the cart from Poteet all the way to Dallas.

I have lost the picture and was wondering if any one on the list has a copy of it that could send it to me.

Thanks, ruagore@msn.com

Has anyone run across this name in their research? I believe he was born in Kentucky in 1836. He was married twice that I know of to Permelia (Sams) and to Emma Isabelle (Penn). He is buried in Vinson, Oklahoma. Any help would be appreciated as I would like to know any family history before him.

Hello -- Saw your reference. I've been researching Carroll Thomas and found him in an 1850 census in Kentucky with John and Elizabeth Acres and siblings James, Julia and Nancy. He then appears in 1860 with his sister Julia and wife Belinda Shroyer (called Malinda in census). Then, strangely, I have him married in 1861 to Lucinda Caroline Radcliff. But I haven't found divorce or death for Belinda, so I'm not sure what happened. Last seen in 1880 in Taney county, Missouri and I've found death references in 1884 and 1887 for Carroll and Lucinda, but not yet where the cemeteries are located.

david,
sorry for my many typo's.

Wm (B) or Wm (J),,, and which one is married to Lydia.?

Need to have actual paperwork to confirm either and who they married.

Andrew's daughter Julia married a R. Shelor. and they both are mentioned in a deed of Anddrew's.

So , I'm not sure what I ought to be checking about Julia that you mentioned. Can you explain, what you were trying to tell me..

What ever Wm Akers married Lydia , I truly believe introduced the name Archibald into my direct family lineage. And to date, no one has said they have a papertrail to connect andrew to his father and mother by name. or least I haven't seen it.
the closest thing I've gotten is the Dr. Brackin ananlyis.
Pls, humbly if you have any of these doc's or know of someone, you is in my family line who could help clarify things for me, and willing to have a dialogue, pls let me know. You seem very versed on all of this.
Regret again for all my typo's in the first email response
I would be so ever greatful.
Later,
Cuz
James: I cant answer your question but could make a couple of comments. First of all, William was a quaker. So I have made some effort toward locating their records which could possibly help. William initally settled in Hunterdon, N. J. ---The English kept some records known as permission to go abroad which I never located. - - Between 1538 and 1837 the church of England kept parish records covering baptism, marriages, and burials (mostly of members).-----Starting in 1837 the English government kept records of births, deaths, and marriages. A promising source which I have not investigated is the Somerset House, London England (records of marriages, deaths, and births).

A very thorough study of the William Akers family in new england states was made by Michael Scott Caldwell. His website has been removed from the internet and I have lost contact with him.- - - Hope that this will keep you from having to reinvent the wheel and give you a better start. David
I think that your copies of the marriage bonds and the copy of Andrews will pretty much nails it to the wall. (I have a copy of the marriage bonds for Jacob Akers and Lucinda Duncan). Using the Montgomery County marriage records you should be able to continue on down the lineage. According to Dr. Amos Wood's book (p.6) William J. Akers was the father of Andrew who married susan Duncan.

THEORY: I believe that an Akers family and the family of Thomas Duncan owned adjacent farms in a rural invironment.
Six of Thomas Duncan chrilden married Akers. (Dr. amos Woods book p. 59). This includes both Andrew Akers and Jacob Akers. We know that William J. Akers was the father of Andrew ((p.6). But was he the father of Jacob? Next, we need to find documentation for the parents of William J.

Since 1993 I have been searching for the parents of Jacob Akers. The ancestors of Jacob and Andrew are probably the same. I have just about given up. One possibility still exists - The Library of Virginia at Richmond. I understand that a mountain of unpublished information is located at the library. There is a lot of genealogical research going on at the library and it takes a lot of process time to
get to desired records. Also, hotel bills are high. So, I guess that we are a broken link.

I would like to caution you on the works of Dr. Henry Bracken. There is a book "OUR KINSFOLK" by W. R. Akers
which may be located at the Montgomery County library in which some of the conclusions of Dr. Bracken are challenged (p.10). Also, I have a copy of a research paper which casts doubt on some of Dr. Bracken's conclusions. (if you want a copy give me "A" mailing address). Best wishes.
DAVID

I trust that your info is correct. According to some sources, there were two Andrew Jackson Akers born in the same year (1817). One was born in Montgomery county and the other in Floyd county (did not exist until 1834). Parents of the first were William B. Akers and Lydia Elkins
The latter was born to Adam Akers and Nancy Altizer. Your info gives William J. Akers and Lydia Elkins. Your data also shows that the andrew born in Montgomery co married Susan Duncan and had Julia Ann Akers. The andrew born in Floyd county married Eveline Reed and had a somewhat different family.

Recommend that you visit http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barbr/aker... and the Dulaney website to see where some confusion exists. You could also search thru worldconnect and the Earl B. Akers website.

Some information of this nature can be found in a book at the montgomery county library. (Floyd County - A history of its people and places by Amos D. Wood ). You can also find some info at worldconnect.com, website of Earl B. Akers, website for Samuel Dulaney and more.

Your post stated that Andrew (William and Lydia's son) married Susan Duncan in 1836. I believe that Andrew was a brother to my ancestor (Jacob Akers). Jacob married Susan's sister (Lucinda Duncan) in 1834. I have been searching for documented proof that Jacob was also a son of William and Lydia for several years. If you could have any info which would help solve this missing link problem, it would certainly be appreciated.

You have skipped a generation. Brooks' parents were James and Sarah "Sally" AKERS per his marriage license/application. You will need to review these marriage licenses for his parents, etc, found in the Floyd County courthouse in Floyd, VA.

Dan

I believe this William Akers was the son of John Akers and Martha of Hunterdon County, NJ. Documentation as follows:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/nj/hunterdon/court/miscco3.txt
William Akers of "Northampton County" testifies while visiting his mother.

William left Hunterdon sometime during the Revolution. NJ State Archives, Revolutionary War Index:
William Akers	Age 40, Private & Corporal, 3rd Regiment, Hunterdon Co. Militia, Capt. John Phillips Co., Col. David Chambers Reg., 1777; Active Service, Battle of Van Nest's Mills, Jan 20, 1777 Mss. 675, 705
Private, 9 days, Oct. 22-31, 1777, Mss 677(or 3)
fined 15:2:6 for not marching with Militia in Dec. 1777 Mss l0040
claims addition service 8/20/76 for one month, Sept. 20, 76 for one month, one tour in 1777, at Battle of Germantown; Moved to PA in 1778, served in Capt. Akers had been fined for not turning out with the Militia in Dec. of 1777 and appealed the fine at the May session of the Court of Common Pleas.
