Re: Lot Akin Born 1802 Georgia

I am interested in GA Akins, specifically those who emigrated from area of Chesterfield County, VA (Petersburg area). My unproved ancestor is James Akin, d. GA 1802, but will is not available. What was his relationship with Thomas Akin, Sr. of VA and GA. James may have been the father of Mr. Pleasant Akin of Petersbburg, VA (1768-1847) This Pleasant Akin was somehow related (cousin) to Arthur Akin, who also had a son named Pleasant who died according to VA Chancery case "unmarried" and in his early 20s or late teens.

Sarah L. Akin born 1849 McMinn, Tennessee

Sarah is my GGG Grandmother. I have the following documentation for her: 1850, 1860, 1870 census and TN Marriages. Many people's trees have the following information: 1. Parents are John Akin and Elizabeth McKinney. 2. Died in various years, the most common seems to be 1912. Does anyone have any sources for these two pieces of info? I found a book called "Some Descendants of Mordecai McKinney" which lists an Elizabeth McKinney who married John Akin. They did have a daughter named Sarah, but she married William Whitlow. Doesn't make sense to me, but I am hoping someone has good sources to help me understand!

Thanks!
Karrie

I believe that the John H. Akin referred to, and I most definitely could be wrong, is Major John Houston Akin who commanded the 9th Tennessee Cav. Bn. He was descended from a Samuel Akin and Millie Biffle. He is buried in Davidson County, TN. I could be very wrong. If so, I apologize.

It could be Anderson J. Akin who was taken prisoner when Fort Donelson fell. He was a cousin of my GGrandfather, Pvt. Edward P. Akin of Company E, 9th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. Strangely enough Anderson was erroneously listed as having deceased at Camp Morton, Indiana. In truth it was their cousin William Akin who perished in Yankee captivity. If you go to the Camp Morton site, and look at the list of Confederate dead, they list Anderson and William Akin as having died the same day. It was a mistake which, sad to say, has still not been c orrected.
I am always glad to see people who are, in truth, my cousins (however removed), trying to find out about our genealogy. I am related to Jackie Woods, who has filled me in on much about our line which is the Robert Howe Akin line. He was a son of the great Reverend.
Rev. John was truly a great man of his time. He came from a man who departed Scotland at an extremely turbulent time in its history. One could speculate that he was involved in the Jacobite uprising of 1745, but it would honestly be, at best, an educated speculation. John was a soldier in the Revolution. He married( I'm sure Jackie will correct me if I'm wrong, as I haven't my genealogical information at hand) his Commanders daughter or widow, I believe and along with a lifelong friend and fellow soldier from the war and his family crossed the Alleghenies on Horseback with their belongings in saddlebags. This lifelong friend was a faithful member of the church Rev. John had erected on a hill he named Pisgah, from the bible. He was a Dutchman( a real dutchman, not a German - who were also called Dutch because people did not know how to pronounce 'Deutsch') named Jacob Biefel, later changed to Biffle. Please be proud, those of you like us, our kith and kin, our Scots blood is strong ( and strongly mixed with Dutch, as the Akin's and Biffle's intermarried) But thanks to Jake Biffle and John Akin and the thousands of other Soldiers and women who sacrificed in the Revolution, we won the right to call ourselves citizens....not subjects. He was great in another way. I do not believe in his heart Rev. John could reconcile the contradictions of philanthropic Christianity and slavery. Yet he would not just send his Slaves out into the world as freemen until they had the "calming influence of Christianity" as Robert E. Lee called it, and an education. But my older brother, the 4th Edward P. Akin discovered as a Doctorate student at UCLA in 1994, by studying census records, that my branch of Rev. Johns family never again owned slaves after 1821. They fought against the Union because loyalty to your state was considered more important than to your country. That, and they fought because they had too. They were invaded.

I have been researching my family. My Mother's side is the Akin family and she had a brother Clifford who was Canadian.
He was married to a woman named Jill and I met her a couple of times when I was a child. I saw Clifford again when I was an adult.
Clifford looked very much like my Grandfather. My Grandfather left Clifford and his familt and married My Grandmother, Lois Amanda Hall (Akin). Leter, he left my Grandmother and married Virginia (maiden name I forget); they had two sons. One of my Grandfathers later sons, William, contacted me and has expressed an interest in knowing more about the family.
Is Jeannett "Jill". I am also trying to connect the Canadian Akins with the ones in the USA. I have traced my Akin roots back to South Africa so far. I would love to know anything that you feel like sharing.

Thank you

Flora M Ramey
Granddaughter of Aaron Kermit Akin
Niece of Clifford Akin

Do either of you happen to know anything about their parents? I see John Akin and Frances Davis as their parents in what I've seen, but I also see John as being the son of Isham Akin and Lereviah Davis. The problem in the records for me is that North Carolina records suggest that these last two were married in 1789, several years after John was born. Might John have been married to someone else before that? Or was this a "renewal of vows" type of thing?

Curious if you've seen this.

~JW

there are a few james aikin listed i did a dna test and was related to a family in south carolina that came over from county antrim ireland around 1787 but my branch did not leave ireland until later and immigrated to canada. my ggg grandfather was a james aikin who was born in county antrim in 1810 and later moved to canada. i received a journal from the folks in south carolina that shows two of the sons did not leave ireland for south carolina but do not know why or have their names. because of the dna link my ggg grandfather must be a child of one of those two sons. your william lloyd may fit into this branch and the james may be another relative

mike

All of the family trees on this site list William Lloyd Aiken Sr. (1740-1783) as being born in Ireland, which sound right. However, they also show his father Thomas William Akin (1698-1794), grandfather James Akin II and great grandfather James Akin I both born and died in Virginia. This just doesn't seem right, but I can figure out if Thomas really is William's father.

Does anyone have any better info on this?

Thanks,
Aaron Akin

Martin L. Akin was I guess my great-grandfather, his son Clark Stockton was my grandfater and his son James Doyle Akin was my father, he passed away in 1991, I am his youngest of three children born in 1958 and never really knew my family well as they are all older than me and once my father passed away there has been no contact. Please send me an email if you like.

Samuel Akin

I am trying to find a Samuel Akin who married Ruth Grundman in 1937 ish? They had two children Richard Monroe (Sept 1938) and Patricia Ruth (Jan 1940). Sam served in WWII and he and Ruth were divorced in 1942. My grandmother Ruth was from Los Angeles (attended Roosevelt High) and I know they were married in Las Vegas, but I don't know much else.

Looking for information on this man. His death certificate seems to read his father is "Olmstead Akin" not certain on this. It is positive the mother is listed as "unknown" as are both birth locations for the parents.

Trying to determine if this James Akin is the same James Akin who marries Joann Thomas 10 Oct 1876 in Logan County, KY. And if this Joann is also known as Josephine.
