The funeral for Gary Robert Akins, 17, who was fatally injured May 12 in a one-car crash near Unity Village in Jackson County, was held Wednesday at Atkinson-Dickey Chapel in Garden City. Rev. Troy Gardner officiated. Burial was in Garden City Cemetery. He was a son of Jerry Dee and Doris Alberta (Mainard) Akins. He was born on July 25, 1945 in Ventura, California and died on May 12, 1963 at Independence Sanitarium. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Jerry Albert Akins; and maternal grandfather, Albert Henry Mainard. Surviving are his mother, Doris, of the home; sister, Gloria Jean Akins of Independence; grandmothers, Elizabeth Akins of Butler and Opal Mainard of Garden City; paternal grandfather, Drue Henry Akins of Garden City; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
