Various spellings include Akin, Akins, Aiken, Ekin, Eiken, Eckin, Ackin, Aitken, Atkin, Atkins, Eiaken, and many variations thereof.
A huge portion of the Akins in this country descend from one James Akins Sr. who came here around 1650 from Scotland via Ireland. More information on him and his descendants can be viewed at: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
WW

My grandmother was an Akins. Our line migrated from Scotland. They first settled in the Carolinas, then migrated to north Georgia counties winding up in DeKalb County. In the early 1900's my branch moved to Birmingham and Bibb County in Alabama.

I have found over and over in my tree as well as my husbands that so often the slaves not only took the last name of their previous owners after they were freed but also often named their children the same given names as the slave owner. I suppose that this is because they stayed on the farms and did not have much contact with the outside world therefore the only American names they knew often were those of their owner's and neighbor's children.

Hi, I am a Scot with the maiden name of Aitken, mine so far, has been traced back to 1708. I know a lot of the family did emigrate to Irelan and to America and your surname could have started out as Aitken. When the name was first written down, remembering that the owner of the name would have had, a strong Scottish accent and possibly not able to read or write themselves, this may have been written down just as it was 'heard'.
Please read message I just posted regarding the above. It is very important: It seems the Gene Pool Records are not accurate. They list my ggrandfather's parents as James "Jim" Akins and Barbara Cox; however, his death certificate lists his parents as John Akins and Nancy Gregory. I e-mailed ancestry.com to give me the address for the people who give the info for Gene Pool Records; now I can't even seem to log on to ancestry.com. What are they trying to hide?

This is the first time I have seen this available.
I'm trying to locate my Akins background. My Grandfather
was Victor William Akins, born March 1876 in Missouri.
He had been married before and had daughters: Edna,Violet,
Cleo and Leona, I have been told when he married my
Grandmother: Laura Alice Fox (Akins) She then had my
Dad: Otis S. Akins and his twin sister Ora, brother Virgil,
sister, Juanita, and brother Victor they were born in
Oaklahoma. I cannot find out anything about his first
four girls other than he was widowed and living with a
brother-in-law in 1910 in Oklahoma. A William Carpenter.
I can't find out who my Grandfathers parents were.
Sgt. 1st Class W.T. Akins, U.S. Army, of Decatur, Ga. - Korean MIA Identified

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 489-08
June 09, 2008
Soldier Missing In Action From Korean War Is Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is Sgt. 1st Class W.T. Akins, U.S. Army, of Decatur, Ga. He will be buried on June 26 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.

Representatives from the Army met with Akins' next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

In November 1950, Akins was a member of the Medical Company, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division then occupying a defensive position near Unsan, North Korea north of a bend in the Kuryong River known as the Camel's Head. On Nov. 1, elements of two Chinese Communist Divisions struck the 1st Cavalry Division's lines, collapsing the perimeter and forcing a withdrawal. Akins was reported missing on Nov. 2, 1950 and was one of the more than 350 servicemen unaccounted-for from the battle at Unsan.

In April 2007, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (D.P.R.K.), acting through the intermediary of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi, repatriated to the United States six boxes of human remains believed to be those of U.S. soldiers. The D.P.R.K. reported that the remains were excavated in November 2006 near Unsan in North Pyongan Province.

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of Akins' remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

Re: Fred Akins and Mintie Douglas

I have been having a hard time finding info about him as well. He was born on Navember 11 1881. He died in Febuary 1910 Newbern TN Dyer County. He married Mintin Baird Jan, 18 1803. They had 3 Children. This is the story I got from one of my great aunts about how he died.

He was walking home from Middlesboro. There were some men playing cards around a fire. Fred was a gambler. He stopped and played cards with the men. He won some of their money and went to head home. The men jumped him and killed him. It was a few months later that Mintie Baird found out what happened. A man came to the house and told her. He is supposed to be buried on that mountain somewhere.
This is everything I have about him. I do have a photo of him.

Akins family, Jackson County, GA, early 1900s

I am trying to trace a family that lived in Jackson County for at least 20 years, possibly more. I only have them so far on the 1930 census.

1930 Harrisburg, Jackson County, Georgia

Akins, James, 48, GA, GA, GA, farmer
Elise, 31, GA...
Dillard, 20, GA
Rufy (Rufus?), 18, GA
Henry G. (Grady), 16, GA
Emory E. (Edward), 14, GA
Woodroe, 11, GA
Claud, 10, GA
William J., 8, GA
Mary, 6, GA
James, 5, GA
Earnest R., 3, GA
Ruthie M., 1, GA

The line I'm researching comes through Dillard, who was born in March of 1910 in Jackson County, GA. He eventually settled in Rockdale County, GA, where he died in 1990. Henry Grady and Emory Edward were also born in Jackson County, GA, and also lived in Rockdale County until their deaths in 1965 and 1973, respectively.

Dillard's father was James Richard Akins/Aikens/Aiken, born about 1882 in Georgia. His mother was Sarah W. Simmons, also born in Georgia, although I don't know her birthdate. She died when Dillard was nine years old, according to Dillard's widow and granddaughter, which would put Sarah's death year around 1919, presumably in Jackson County. James then remarried about three months later to Elise. I understand that there might have been a bit of friction about his hasty remarriage among his children. James had several children with Elise, thus the large family listed in the 1930 census.

I appreciate any help in locating this family. Dillard's granddaughters are newbies at genealogy, I think, and are very interested in what can be found!

Thanks so much!

Lisa
