This name originates from the ASSIN area of the Central Region in GHANA, WEST AFRICA. This area was quite a popular slave trading area and to this day the market square where slaves were bought and sold still stands although it has not been elevated to tourist/museum standards. It is interesting to note that the huge forts which housed the Captives en masse are only afew miles away.
The name is also linked to the CIMMARONS and the MAROONS, some of the most rebellious and warlike slaves of the era who trace their ancestry to this area. Legend and fact have it that their riotous nature and thorough skills of organization and warfare against their captors, especially as far freeing slaves was concerned, quickly taught the latter to avoid them and actually helped to hasten the end of the Slave Trade when the Slaves began to fight back.
Today, some of their descendants may be found in the mountaineous areas of JAMAICA, still as proud and as defiant as their present day cousins in GHANA.
There is a group of these people in JAMAICA who go by the name "ACCOMPONG", and the similarities in culture between them and their GHANAIAN counterparts is so striking !
It is my aim to hear from ANYBODY ANYWHERE who bears the name "AKOMPONG" or "ACCOMPONG" to reunite, share experiences, compare notes and establish a family tree for CULTURE NEVER DIES !
