I was just curious, would you know of a way that I could find out Raymonds immediate family like his siblings and their children? My Mom has become increasingly interested in all of this now and is very curious to find out more. Any info you suggest would be greatly appreciated as uaual!

I found Frank!

I think that I have found the mysterious Frank Alama.
He was hiding in my material all the time!

But in my records he is not listed as "Frank" but as "Frans":

Frans Alamaa
Born: 27/12 1874
Father: Salomon Alamaa
Mother: Carolina Pehrsdotter
Source: Hfh: Län 25, Karl Gustavs parish: A1:7 Year 1866-1875 62314 Card 7/10 Nr 220

And this is his father and mother:

Salomon Salomonsson Alamaa
Born: 12/11 1828
Village: Kukkola
Moved to Norway 1858, came back to Kukkola, moved to Norway again 1866 (according to Trond B.)

Carolina Pehrsdotter Blom
Born: 21/1 1851
Married: 30/10 1871
Village: Keräsjänkä, Kattilavaara

As you can see Frans/Franks mothers maiden name was "Blom" not "Blum". I think it means the same thing (short for "Flower") but "Blum" is German.

So now Lori and Deanne you can trace your ancestors back to 1703 when Joseph Clemetsson Martimo was born. Just look in the material that I sent you. Frank/Frans is listed on page 27.

If Frank was born Frans and changed it when he came to the US or if it's an error in my material is yet to find out.

This means that we are not related but that our ancestors lived on the same farm!

Hi Alicia,
I checked with my mom and she is without a doubt amazed! She has had both my Grandfathers dates of birth and death written down in her belongings and they correspond with the dates you had so it is definately the same person. All the info you sent me in the long census regarding him personally (birth, death, county, etc..) was correct! Just wanted you to know!

That is the same Raymond we are speaking of! His parents were Frank and Esther! Oh PLEASE, if you have any more info, could you please forward it to me here or through my email address? Since Melvin, Leonard and Raymond were brothers
that makes your mother cousin to Deanne (wrote earlier in this thread) And it makes you second cousin to Jamie (who also wrote earlier in this thread). And of course it also makes you second cousin to Deanne's (and all her siblings) children.

Seems like you suddenly got a large family...
If I find Frank in my family tree I will let you know.

We are not related but I do alot of volunteer work , mostly for the Scandinavian community. I subscribe to the records at Ancestry. com Minnesota has a great index as it lists the mothers maiden name quite often.

I checked some things out and Nieimi IS a decendant of my Grandfather Raymond Alama...I had never heard of this name before! Thank You SO MUCH for that info!!!!!!!
Frank and Ester was my Great Grandparents names...yes!!!!
I have pictures of them both that have been passed down...wow!
I am truly blessed to be in contact with you and Hakan...the info is unbelieveable!

My great grandmothers second huband was from Torneö Sweden and always said that they were Swedish allthough
the original Lantto's name came from Finland. I think being such a combination is wonderful.
Was your Raymond's parents Frank and Esther? The 1930 census has all listed but I cannot find a Raymond Alama.
I take it that he was born in Minnesota? His mothers maiden name was Nieimi. : Minnesota Death Index, 1908-2002 has 1 match for:
Raymond Alama
I can do a census lookup for you if you know his parents names.

Hi Hakan & Alicia,
Wow! It seems you know so much regarding the Alama name! I was just discussing this whole situation with my Mom and she insists that I am of Finnish nationality and not Swedish though! Her Dad was Raymond Alama and she really, really insists that he was Finnish and not Swedish. I dont know how much she knew of him though because he was not a major part of her life, unfortunately. Im guessing he just told her he was (not quite knowing his entire background, perhaps?) and that is what she is going on. Which causes me to ponder another question and if either of you could help, I would greatly appreciate it...Is there any chance at all that I could be of Finnish decent and not Swedish? Or is it "etched in stone" that I am Finnish? Please respond, I will be waiting! Thank you SO much!

Thank you Häkan, I have actually met Trond and family a few years ago. They visited here in Michigan where he had ancestors. He was very helpful with my Winqvist family.

Trond lives in Vadsø, the "kven capitol" in Norway.

I'm not an expert on this but kvens are a people of finnish decent (most likely), that are mentioned in west nordic sources from the medieval times. The Norweigans did not like them since they raided Norway.

But it is also a Norwegian name for the Finns and people from Torniovalley who emigrated to the northern parts of Norway.
They are called "Kvener" in Norway, "Kväner" in Swedish and "Kainulaiset" in Finland. There are still people in Norway that are called "Kvener". I'm not sure where they come from.
I'm not familiar with Norwegian census but it sounds likely that "K" stands for "Kven" (Kvener is plural and Kven is singular)

By the way, you where not missinformed regarding the word "Finne". It means "Finnish" in Swedish but in the Tornio Valley it was also used to describe what language a person spoke. He or she could very well be Swedish. Maybe you could say that it was a way to describe that the person was a poor peasant...

Hope that this could be of some help, but to be really sure about the Kvens you should contact a Norwegian, maybe there is one in this board?

Do you know the difference for example in the Norwegian census when a person has a K by their name, I was told it
was Kven or Kveni? Is it the same as being Finne?

Hi Alicia!

Just wanted to inform you that if you find the word "Finne" in the Swedish census, that does not always mean that the person is of Finnish nationality. More often, especially in Tornedalen (Tornio Valley) it means that the person spoke finnish. Or to be absolute correct; Meänkieli, ("Tornio valley finnish") a form of the finnish language used in the Tornio Valley, by both Swedish and Finnish nationality.
In fact it is still recognised as a minority language in Sweden today.

the Alama name goes back to the early 1722 in Finland. Some of the Alama people crossed the boarder between Finland and Sweden in Norrbotten Sweden. They are listed as Finne ( Finnish in the Swedish census)

Frank Alama...not positive but could be my Great Grandfather. My Great Grandmothers name was Elsie. She had many children, a few that have passed.
