My husband's great, great, great grandfather immigrated to Puerto Rico in the early 1800's from the Canary Islands, He was Juan Alamo and was married to Maria de La Paz Sanchez. Their son Jose Alamo married Vicenta Leal on 8/16/1851, their son Lorenzo Alamo married Rita (Ritz) on 5/1/1895. They had eight children, Eduardo, Ramona Brigida (Bilo)- his grandmother, Candida, Maria Dolores, Jesus and Samuel. If any of these people are connected to your family I wiould love to hear from you.

Sorry, I reread your message and wanted to add a few more things. Your mother may have remembered Raul having a son named Paul because in the states, Raul was called "Paul". That name has been passed on through my family. I have an uncle and cousin named Paul now, after "Raul/Paul" (I think he used it interchangably).

And yes, he was a Barber in DC. Family story has it that he also cut hair at the Cuban embasy in D.C., adn he also housed a lot of Cuban Baseball players and helped them get their contracts.

I have some fun pictures of him Raul in his barber shop. He met my great-grandmother, Dorothy, because the bus stop she waited for every day was right out side his shop. She was 20 years younger than him and a German/Irish girl living with her very strict family. So they married in secret and she continued living with her parents. She finally had to tell them about 3-4 years later when she became pregnet with my grandfather! They tell me that Raul was very respectable to her parent's feelings and bought a house only a few blocks from them so that Dorothy would still be close enough to home to help them out.

In fact...Dorothy has a niece living in southern California right now that spent a lot of time at Dorothy and Raul's house growing up. She might enjoy talking with you and your mother too.

I have a lot of pictures of Raul out to dinner with people maybe your mother will be able to identify. I'm not sure if they are Cuban friends of DC, or family from Cuba come to visit him.

I'm sorry, I am going on and on and will save this for another time :)
Thanks!
Beth

This is in response to your note from Nov. unfortunately I did not see this until today.

Hi my name is Amelia Cumulada-Porres. My grandfather was Benito De La Nuez. He passes away in 1987 at the age of 85 years old. My mother is Amelia De La Nuez (Married name is Cumulada). My mother tells me that her father and Raul Alamo were cousins. My grandfather's mother died at 21 and her half sister was Josepha Mendiondo (died on 5-24-48) who raised my grandfather as her own. My mother says this was the person that most influenced her as a child. My mom says when she was born Josepha got so excited that she ran to tell the neighbors the good news and accidentally ran into a closet! My grandfather always considered this his "real" family and spoke to me (his grand daughter)often about his brothers. My grandfather visited him in Washington when my mother was a little girl. He would tell her that Raul had three children. My mom thinks there names were Paul, Dorothy and she cannot remember the third. She also says there were lots of pictures of them growing up around her home. She will look to see if she still has some from the pictures that she has from Cuba. My mother also remembers my grandfather telling her that Raul was a barber and had a nice shop in Washington. When my mom was little she says her parents would give her gifts from Santa Clause because since she had American cousins they had asked Santa to bring her gifts.

According to my mom, Eugenio, Oscar and Conchita did not have children. Eugenio raised the nieces of his wife. My grandfather had two children my Uncle Benito Julio and my mother Amelia (named after his birth mother). We all reside in L.A. California. Well I hope to hear from you soon. My mother was quite exceited with hearing the news.

Thanks

Amelia

That is very interesting, can you tell me more about your grandfather? Since I posted my query, I have found out that My great-grandfather's name was Raoul Roberto Alamo Mendiondo. When he came to the united States in 1917, the name was Americanized to Paul Robert Alamo. I know that his mother's name was Josefa Mendiondo, and that she was living in Madruga, Cuba in 1917.
In my great-grandfather's 1953 obituary, his siblings were listed as Concha, Eugenio, and Oscar Alamo, along with Benito de la Nuez.
My family is very interested in discovering their Cuban heritage and finding out more about my great-grandfather.

Do you know the name of your grandfather's aunt? Or anything else about him that may connect him to my great-grandfather? Did your grandfather ever come to the states and settle here? Raoul Alamo settled in Washington D.C. where he worked as a Barber. I know he was very prominant there with the Cuban community, and we have many pictures of him throwing parties and dining with Cuban friends/relatives that we cannot identify. I also know he had a best friend with the last name of Castro who became the godfather of his children.

Please let me know if there may be any connection, and thank you very much for contacting me!

Beth Alamo
bethgenealogy@yahoo.com

My grandfather's name was Benito De La Nuez. He was born in 1901 and died in 1987. His mother Amelia died shortly after his birth and he was raised by an aunt who had other children that became his siblings. I hope this helps narrow your search.

Hi, I'm not familiar with your father's name, but I'm wondering if we are even related. They're aren't to many Alamo's. I remember having a cousin named Michael but he also had a step brother named Raymond. Do you have an email address? Maybe we can chat one day.
Hope to talk to you soon
Liza

Alamo, from the Philippines or whoever.

My name is Jing Alamo, my Dad's name is Manuel Alamo, My grandfather's name is Miguel Alamo, and my great grandfather's name is Nicolas Alamo. We are from the Philippines, central Philippines in particular. Most of the Alamos I talked to in the phone are either from Mexico or Argentina. And as I notice in the internet most of them are from Puerto Rico. If you're from the Philippines write to me and maybe we could be related or we could help each other out in finding our roots. If you are from Mexico, Argentina, or Puerto Rico let me know if you had relatives that migrated to the Philippines from a long time ago. I know the surname "Alamo" is from Spain, so if you're from Spain please feel free to communicate and help us find our roots. By the way I live in Ansbach, Germany.

Paul Alamo from Cuba

My great-grandfather came to the USA from Cuba at the begining of the 20th century. He was a barber in Washington DC and would go cut hair for the Cuban Embisarries. The only problem is that "Paul Alamo" was not his name in Cuba...it was something like Rrau Menuwento (not correct spelling...I"m just guessing!). He may have originally been from Spain. I really don't know many details, but I thought I would try and see if anyone has a clue about him! Thank you!

~Beth Alamo~

Re: Alamo family history
Hi -

We have the same grandfather. Edward Alamo was my mother's father - born in PR, died in Mexico in the 70's. He's on the SS Death Index. My mother was born in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. He and my grandmother moved there after they got married and had a little coffee business. He was in the navy there and was transfered to the Great Lakes naval base when WWII broke out. That's how they came to Chicago. I know he was married more than once. Are you from Texas? I know he had a family in Texas which he did not tell my grandmother about. She found out years later when she tried to get SS after he died. They were married in her church in Mexico - very beautiful - I went there. He loved Mexico, loved to travel - had a great personality I'm told. My mother and her sisters totally adored him. His parents were not directly from Spain but their ancestors were from the Canary Islands. I'm in the process of doing research on them. He had alot of siblings - a sister named Candy who died of cancer in New York in the 50's, and Bela, a nurse who married a man named Carl Johnson in Dallas. I can tell you more. Let me know more about your connection.

Your cousin,

Megan
