Thanks Courtney,

The church records are a very good find. I don't have any other info on the WIGGERS. I have a detailed chart of decendants of the ALBERS family compiled in the 1930s. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Dave

Dave,

Perhaps I didn't attach the files last time. If you still cannot access them, do you have a personal email address to which I can send them?

Yes, all the information you stated is correct according to the German records research I have done. I am actually living in Germany right now, and I am trying to accomplish as much local research as I can while here. Everything is a legal and cost process, though, and I am working against that.

Thanks,
Courtney

A publication written by Gertrude Albers Meyer says:

Johann, his wife Anna (nee Wiggers) and their two children left Germany in 1848 from Hamburg on the Danish Brig "Manon". Records show that Claus Wiggers, age 24, and Jacob Wiggers, age 18, came with Johann and family. They landed in New York on 27 May 1848. Two days before their arrival their three year old son, Johann, died on board ship and their small daughter, Heimke, died one month later in their new home in Calumet County in the State of Wisconsin.

The book also says that Sielke Cacilie Wiggers and Anna Wiggers were the daughters of Michel Wiggers and Sielke Cacilie (Kluver) Wiggers.

Johann was the son of Johann Albers and Antje (Wickmann) Albers. He had brothers Jacob, Hartwig, and Ilpern.

Would you be able to contact me through my profile? I am unable to get your attachment.

Thanks, Dave

According to the Muensterdorf Church records, Anna and Sielke were sisters. I have attached the file showing such.

Sielke Cacilie Wiggers was the sister to Jacob Wiggers and Anna Wiggers. Anna Wiggers married Johann Albers, perhaps a brother to Kurt Hermann Albers? Then two sisters would have married two brothers. I am interested in looking for my grandfather who was either a brother, brother-in-law, or cousin to Jacob, Anna, and Sielke. His name was Claus, and he was born 1824/1825 in Schleswig.

The passenger list from the ship on which he emigrated to the USA states he was a brother to Jacob and Anna. All 3 came over to the USA on the same ship.

If anyone has any information regarding this family, please reply here. Thanks!

Heinrich Albers - looking for descendents/connection

Hello, I am looking for descendents of Heinrich Albers (born 16 Aug 1826 in Hanover, Germany; died 5 Jun 1914 in Pittsfield, Wisconsin) and Sophia Wilhemine Ottens(born abt 1826 in Hanover; died between Dec 1869 and June 1870). The family immigrated to Wisconsin in 1867. Children included: Marie, Frederich, Heinrich, Caroline, Wilhelm and August. All of the children were born in Hanover Germany, except for my Great-Grandfather, August, who was born in Wisconsin.

The 1870 Federal Census shows Heinrich (father), Marie, Caroline, Wilhelm and August living in Manitowoc. Sophia is not listed on this census, so it appears that Sophia/Wilhemine died sometime after giving birth to August in Dec 1869 and the taking of the 1870 Census. Frederich and Heinrich also do not appear on the census record so they must have died sometime between arriving in the U.S. and 1870. By the 1895 Wisconsin Census, the remaining family members were living in Pittsfield, Wisconsin.

Other known details of the family members including children and marriages are:

1) Marie: Born about 1854 in Hanover, died 02 Jan 1929 in Tacoma Pierce Washington; married to Henry Bitters. Children included Henry, Ida, William and George

2) Frederich: born abt 1859 Hanover Germany

3) Heinrich: born abt 1861 Hanover Germany

4) Caroline: born 06 Aug 1862 Hanover Germany; died 11 Jan 1919 Pittsfield, WI. 1st Marriage to Unknown Gettler with children Ida and Henry. 2nd marriage to Otto Ludke with children Edward, Elmer, Alma and Clarence.

5) Wilhelm born abt 1866 in Hanover Germany

6) August H Albers: born 11 Dec 1869 in Brown County Wisconsin. Died 22 Dec 1911 in Menominee Michigan. Married Ernestine Elcheroth, born 11 Jan 1876 in Schierien Diekirch Luxembourg. They owned the Aberdeen Hotel in Menominee Michigan. Children included: George P Albers married to Mary Sherry; Alice Albers married to Frank Linsmeier; Cecelia Albers married to William Frankard, Lawrence Charles Albers married to Louise Pearson

I am hoping to find a connection with others who are reserching this or related lines.

Sherry

Dear Mr. Rubbelke.

I could imagine that your ancestors stem from the area around Westenholz in Germany. Most of the Rübbelkes, Rubbelkes, Ruebelkes etc. seem to stem from this region (which is located near Paderborn). Many Rübbelkes also live near Gütersloh (e.g. in the town Rietberg).

Re: Albers from Oldenburg/Ammerland

This is the same story that I have regarding my family.
Johan was the son of Adde.
In my opinion, here is the unusual part. Oldenburg Jever does not refer to Oldenberg, Germany. This became evident to me when I purchased a map of Oldenburg dated from around 1850. At one point in history, Jever was part of the city state (or county) of Oldenberg. This is somewhat like saying that I live in Los Angeles, when actually, I may be from the city of Redondo Beach, near Los Angeles. So, instead of Jever being a section of Oldenberg, the city, Jever is actually a town found in the very northern part of Oldenberg, a state or territory governed, at that time, by the City of Oldenberg. People from that area, including Adde Albers and Johan Albers were not German. Instead, they were Frisians. Many people in this area still speak a language that we would consider close to Dutch, not German. The language, like the people is called East Frisian. This language is very close to the what is spoken today in the northern part of The Netherlands (it is called there the West Frisian langage). Cultural differences include the tradition of drinking tea (somewhat like a British afternoon tea). Both Western and Eastern Frisian are closer to English than any other language . Also, the architecture in this area is different. Frisian architecture does not look like what you find in northern Germany. Of interest, you will still find some homes with thatched roofs in this area.
So, in my opinion, based on geography, Johan was Frisian and his father, Adde Albers was Frisian. It is easy to see this using Google maps and looking up the location/names of their respective towns. Adde was from a town even closer to the ocean than Jever. In that sense, you could say that Adde was more Frisian than his son.
Approximately, 2,000 years ago, the Romans identified the Frisians as a distinctly different people/tribe. That distinction still applies. You can look this information up very easily with a Google search.

Around 1,300, the Frisians had a country that ran from Bruges, Belgium, to just east of Jever. Look for maps from that era and you will quickly find the location of greater Frisia.

Germans and Danish people flock to East Frisia and the North Frisia islands for vacations. East Frisia borders Denmark and is considered a great seaside resort area.

Now you know. You are Frisian.

Albers from Kranenburg, Prussia to De Pere, WI and beyond

I am currently working on a publication of the Albers family which immigrated from the Kranenburg, Kleve region of Prussia to predominately the De Pere area of Wisconsin. In the linked families so far there are two brothers who immigrated later in life with their families.

The first is Peter Albers (b. Schottheide 1813 d. 1896 De Pere, Wisconsin). He was married to Maria Willemsen and they had at least three children who came to the US. Albert, resided in Ohio in 1931, a sister who was married to Peter Hendricks in Preble, and Peter (1841-1931). Peter married Anna Maria Vosbeck and had the following children: Martin P (1875-1969), William (1877-1972), Peter John (1879-1950), Frank (1881-1971), Mary (1883-1973, married Henry Willems), Henry (b. 1886), Anthony (1888-1971), Louis (1890-1924), Nellie (b. 1892, married Louis Calaway), and Albert (b. 1895). Albert, Anthony and John were in Milwaukee in 1931.

The second is Gerhard (George) Albers (b. Schottheide 1815 d. 1894 Lawrence, Wisconsin). He was married to Joanna Albers (1822-1873). Their surviving children were: Maria (1854-1926 married John Keyzer & Stephen Timmermans), Henry (1855-1938), Joanna (1857-1936 married John Mooren), Petronella (1859-1915 m. Martin Vissers), Theodora (1860-1926 m. John Huizenveld), Christina (1865-1955 m. George Huizenveld), and Peter (1869-1947).

The other main Albers who immigrated from Kranenburg to the De Pere area was William (1853-1923). His parents were Henry Albers & Helena Albers, and I have not linked him into the previous families yet.

I would love to hear from family members or others researching this line.
Hello Duncan,
no, there does not seem to be any connection to the Albers in Jever, the name being very common around here.

The "Countess von Ofen" may offer a clue, the countess probably referring to the "von", suggesting nobility, which is probably nonsense. But: the name "von Ofen/von Oven" appears regularely around Oldenburg, the family originally coming from the village of Ofen close to the city of Oldenburg.

Heiko Ahlers, Oldenburg
(once from Jackson, Michigan)
HI,

Since corresponding with you several years ago, I have learned a little more about my Albers. Still trying to learn something about his parents and siblings in Germany.

My g-g-g-grandfather was Adde Meenen Albers, born 1804 in Oldenburg, Germany. In a letter from Adde Meenen to his eldest son, he mentions "Waddewarden." Also, the baptism for his son Christian was recorded in the Churchbook of "Waddewarden." I don't know if Adde Meenen was also born there, or if he was just living there at the time they moved to the United States.

Family oral history states that Adde Meenen Albers was the oldest of three children who were orphaned quite young. The mother died, the father started drinking and died in the poorhouse. The sister also died, and the two brothers were separated and never saw each other again. The state took over the care of Adde Meenen until he was 14 years old, then he was on his own. No further info on his brother. Don't know if a relative took him in, or a family adopted him, or if the state also took care of him.

Adde Meenen's first wife is unknown. They had one daughter, Etta Margaretha Christina, born 1829.

Adde's second wife was Maria Hendrichs. They had 6 children: Johann Anton, Engle Maria, Frienka Margaretha,
Albert, Anna Lucena, and Gerhard. Wife Maria died about 1847. In Adde Meenen's papers, there is a receipt for a bill for a funeral dated 1847. It doesn't say who the deceased was, but the bill is to be paid to Hinrichs Gerdes Hinrichs by Gerd Jurgens Hinrichs on Adde Meenen Albers(spelling is questionable on these names, even the English translation is hard to read). The way I understand it Adde Meenen owed Hinrichs Gerdes Hinrichs and Gerd Jurgens Hinrichs paid on the bill. But, I may be reading it wrong.
It could POSSIBLY be for Adde's wife.

Adde's third wife was Christina Harms. They married between 1847 and 1849. They had 11 children, 2 born in Germany: Gretta Katherine and Christian. The rest born after 1851 when they arrived in West Virginia: Sophia, Henrietta, Anna Margaretha, Maria Caroline, Emelia, Henrich Meenen, George Washington, Elnora, Maria Juianna, and possibly a 12th child, Christina.

One contact said that according to German naming traditions, Adde Meenen's father's name could POSSIBLY be Meenen or Meenken.

Do any of these family names sound familiar? Or, the story about Adde Meenen's parents and siblings?

I have a feeling that Albers is a very common name.

Janet

Hi,

I would love to compare notes.

Adde Meenen's daughter Mary (Engle Maria)was my great-great grandmother. She married Little John Finster.
Their daughter Lucena Catherine Finster was my great- grandmother. She married Carl August Handke.
Their son Simon Handke was my grandfather.

My Mary Albers Finster and most of the Finsters stayed in West Virgina.
The Handkes were from the Atchison/Doniphan Kansas area.
It took me quite a while to figure out how a Finster from West Virginia married a Handke from Kansas. Once I found the Albers connection it made sense.

I know that several of Adde Meenen's children lived in the Doniphan area.

I have some info on Albert's family, but most of it came from census records, which are not always accurate. I have 13 children listed for Albert and Louisa Hannah Albers, but I did not have a Silas, so I would like info on him. Don't know how I missed him.

It's interesting that Adde Meenen's older children left West Virginia, and most of the younger ones stayed there.

Does your family have any additional information on Adde Meenen's parents or siblings? If the story about him being orphaned young is true, we may never find anything about them.

Janet
janetstitch@aol.com

I have Albers in my family but we are from the other side of the river in Illinois. There is whole town in Clinton County, Illinois called Albers. My GGgrandfather was John Herman Albers and was born in 1820 in Germany and died on May 18, 1872 and is buried at St. Libory, IL in St. Clair County. His daughter was Anna Francis and she was also born in Germany but came to the US in 1880 according to Washington County Illinois census records. AF Albers married Gerhard Heinrich Hoff and the were the parents of my grandfather George Clemons Hoff. The Catholic church records for the Belleville, IL diocese are now on microfilm at the St. Clair Co. Historical Society in Belleville. Hope it helps. I have not had any luck with Albers and ships records or immegration records. Hope yours is better.

Heiko,
Saw your 18 Oct 2000 posting re the above. I have a great-grandmother, Karolina Louisa Helene Albers, b. 08 Jan 1843 in or near Jever, Oldenburg. She was at least one of five children of Johann Frederick Albers and Caroline Biehne [not certain of spelling here] aka Countess Caroline Von Ofen. Johann was b. c. 1806 somewhere in Oldenburg, and d. c. 1880-90 possibly in northern Illinois. It is thought that Caroline, probably Johann's second wife, died in Oldenburg around the birth of her last child, Karl, sometime in 1860. I have no information to support why Caroline was referred to as a countess, nor any information regarding who her parents and siblings might have been. The spelling of the name Biehne appears odd and could very well be incorrect.

Johann Frederick Albers [farmer], age 57, his children: Karolina, age 20, August [farmer], age 18, Friedrika, age 16, [can't read the name of this male child - under age 16 & over age 3], and Karl, age 3, arrived at the Port of New York from Bremen aboard the "Stella" on 08 Jun 1863. The family settled near the present day town of Homewood, Illinois, a few miles south of Chicago.

Does any of this information connect with the Helene Albers you mention?

Duncan C.
Bernard H Rubbelke and Elizabeth M Albers

I'm looking for info on Bernard H Rubbelke and Elizabeth M Albers. Bernard was born 27 Sep 1869. Elizabeth was born 10 Jan 1870. I can't find either of these people on a census from before they were married. The date in which they were married was 22 Oct 1889. On the Census' that I do find them on (1900-1930) they are living in St. Louis or St. Ferdinand Missouri. In 1900 they lived in ward 17, 1910: ward 2, and 1920: ward 18. Bernard died 9 July 1930. In the 1930 Census Elizabeth is living in St. Ferdinand. Elizabeth died 29 Aug 1951. On Bernard's Death record it says his parents names were Henry Rubbelke and Catherine Broeckelmon. On Elizabeth's death record it says her Dad was Hy Albers. Bernard and Elizabeth were burried in Sacred Heart Cemetary Sec Old, Lot 0035. Also burried with them are their kids Cyril, Mary Ann, and Rose, Bernard's Dad Henry, going by the name Hein, and a Katharina and William Duttmann who died between 1905 and 1911. Hein died Dec 23, 1877. I've found a possible marriage record of Bernard's parents. I found a Henrieus Geo Rübelke marrying a Maria Cath Büser in St. Louis Missouri on 24 Jan 1867. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Soon as I find out who it is, I will forward it to you.
I am seeking info on the family of Schmacker, Schmackers, Smakers, ect from the Oldenburg, Leer, Kolner, Wiefelsted, Zetel, Hanover, and others.
I am decended from Johann Albers b. 26 Apr. 1823, Hartwig Albers' brother. They are both through Jacob and Johann Albers from Buttel, Germany. My side of the family went to Wisconsin, yours to Iowa. Johann Albers married Anna Wiggers, who may very well be the sister of your Sielke Wiggers.
