Adde Meenen Albers

"Adde Meenen Albers, born 1804 in Oldenburg, Germany. In a letter from Adde Meenen to his eldest son, he mentions "Waddewarden"... I would like to add a few points that should surprise everyone. Addee is not from Oldenburg, he is from a small town near the city state of Oldenburg. His son was listed as being from Oldenburg. However, he too was from a small town that was put under the jurisdiction of the region of OLDENBURG. Waddewarden is a town in "Wangerland", between Jever and another town that was mentioned as a place that Adde lived (right near the coast). So, Adde is actually from a town with a different culture than you find in Oldenburg. His son is from Jever, a larger town, just a few miles away and still in Wangerland. Both the father and son are Frisian. Please look it up on a map. You will see that Jever is a separate town from Oldenburg, just like Addee is not really from Oldenburg, he is from a small village. The nearest large town is Oldenburg. To get a better perspective of all this, do a computer search, look for a Frisian map from around the 1600's. So, what I am saying is please think of Oldenburg as a region (almost like a county), not a city, where Adde and his sons are from and this is not a city that most would call German (even though the small towns are today in Germany). I say this because I have been in the region and met Frisians. Also, I visited the Frisian language institute.
I do not have the names of all of his sons. This is also as far back as I can go. I want to stress that these people were Frisian, not Dutch, and not German. This culture has a separate language and traditions than the Germans and is the closest language to English (yet, they all speak Germans as a 2nd language). Look up "East Frisian Tea" for some examples of the culture. The people are located in and near a string of islands from north Netherlands to the Danish border. By looking up the area, you will find that they still have thatched roof housing on many homes. The area that Adde came from is just a few miles from the Dutch border. If possible, I suggest you visit the region. Waddewarden is a Frisian area. This is a flat area and quite bog like. Please look it up on a map. You will see a string of small towns and islands. The largest Frisian town is Groningen, located in the north of the Netherlands. Jever (where Addee's son is from) is also Frisian. Jever is just a couple of miles from where Adde lived and also the name of a Beer (from Jever). (Sorry, I am late in sending this note. I have had 3 back operations in the past 2 years and still recovering.)WIKIPEDIA-The geographical region of East Frisia was inhabited in Paleolithic times by reindeer hunters of the Hamburg culture. Later there were Mesolithic and Neolithic settlements of various cultures leading up to the invasion of Germanic tribes belonging to the Ingvaeonic group. Those were Chauci mentioned by Tacitus (ROMAN) and Frisians.

The region between the rivers Ems and Weser was inhabited by the Chauci, who were partly displaced by Frisian expansion after about 500, and were later partially absorbed into the Frisian society. The first proven historical event was the arrival of a Roman fleet under Drusus in 12 BC; the ships sailed into the course of the Ems river and returned. After the second century AD there is no mention of the Chauci.

Saxons also settled the region and the East Frisian population of medieval times is based on a mixture of Frisian and Saxon elements. Nevertheless, the Frisian element is predominant in the coastal area, while the population of the higher Geest area expresses more Saxon influence.

In the Middle Ages people could only settle on the higher situated Geest areas or by erecting in the marsh-areas "Warften", artificial hills to protect the settlement, whether a single farming estate or a whole village, against the North Sea floods.

In about 1000 AD the Frisians started building large dikes along the North Sea shore. This had a great effect on establishing a feeling of national identity and independence. Until the late Middle Ages Ostfriesland resisted the attempts of German states to conquer the coasts.

The period after prehistory can only be reconstructed from archaeological evidence. Access to the early history of Ostfriesland is possible in part through archaeology and in part through the studying of external sources such as Roman documents. The information becomes clearer by early Carolingian time, when a Frisian kingdom united the whole area from present-day West Frisia (the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Groningen and part of North Holland) throughout East Frisia up to the river Weser. It was ruled by kings like the famous Radbod whose known names were still mentioned in folk tales until recent times. Frisia was a short-lived kingdom, and it was crushed by Pippin of Herstal in 689. East Frisia then became part of the Frankish Empire. Charles the Great then divided East Frisia into two counties. (Please spend some time looking up this culture) KEN

My grandfather's sister, Anna Stamm, married Bernard Albers in Guttenberg, IA. I was born and grew up in Guttenberg. He is the Bernard Albers that was born 14 Sept 1855 in Hanover, Germany, and died 4 oct 1927 in Cottonwood ID.
I have a picture of his family.
I have a copy of his obit my mom saved.
I also have a copy of an obit for Mrs. Anna Miller (nee Albers), b. 1871, d. 1946, both in Guttenberg. She married a William Miller in 1891. She was the daughter of a Mr. & Mrs. Ben Albers, but apparently not the one I'm related to.
I'd be interested in corresponding with anyone in the family.
Teresa

Thank you for this. I will explore this connection. From census records I show Caroline being married to an unknown Gettler prior to Otto Luedke. It could have easily been spelled wrong on the census. I don't speak German, but I imagine that Gaerther may sound like "Gettler" when spoken. Also, I show Caroline's mother as Wilhemina, not Emelia, but once again close enough for further exploration! Also, Caroline's middle name, "Minnie" is a nickname for Wilhemina.

Further to my previous email, I realized that Wilhemina hadn't died giving birth to my Great-Grandfather....She was listed as "Maney" on the Census. Her occupation was listed as "Housekeeper." That's why I thought a relative was staying in the house looking after the children. However, when I later scrolled down the page, I saw that every woman's occupation in the household was listed as housekeeper. Imagine that! I guess it was considered the same as homemaker in later years!

So, thank you again! A new avenue to explore!!

Hello Sherry, I may have bumped into your line as I was doing some research in the Brown County, Wisconsin courthouse. Marriage reference 9:180 on 31 December 1880 in Green Bay, Wisconsin was recorded as follows:
Husband: Wihlelm Friedrich Gaerther
Wife: Karoline Minnie Albers
Occupation of Husband: Farmer
Residence of Husband: Pittsfield, Wisconsin
Birthplace of Husband: Pittsfield, Wisconsin
Father of Husband: John Gearther
Mother of Husband: Carolina Gaerther
Father of Wife: Henrich Albers
Mother of Wife: Emelia Albers

Obviously the maiden names weren't recorded properly, but thought the above may aid you.

I have no idea if this will help, but the home in Cincinnati my husband and I acquired about a year ago once belonged to a Mary Margaret Albers. Just yesterday I met a neighbor I hadn't yet had the opportunity to talk with, and he told me that he actually grew up next door to this house (he's across the street now). He says he remembers it being referred to as the Albers House, and that the Albers family, who he thought might have been the ones to build it, were prominent in the area. He was very young then, though, and doesn't recall why they were prominent.

I am trying to find any matches for his parents or sibilings. Have you found anything else on this that could be a possilbe match?

Thanks
Adam

Thanks Courtney,

The church records are a very good find. I don't have any other info on the WIGGERS. I have a detailed chart of decendants of the ALBERS family compiled in the 1930s. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Dave
