Sanders & Ruth Holbrook
Charles F's (b. 1863 in Nebraska) parents were Charles Sanders & Elizabeth Daniels
Charles (b. abt. 1820 in Tennessee) parents were John Sanders & Dorcas Smith
John's (b. about 1780 in Tennessee) parents were Mitchell Sanders & Susannah Springfrog

Any information or assistance you would be willing to give me to find out more about my family would be GREATLY apprecited!
Mary Beatrice Alberty was a cousin to my Grand-father Perry Alberty Gaylor. Mary Beatrice Alberty lived with my great-grandmother until her until my great-grandmother died. Beatrice Alberty then went to live with the Ragsdale Family, which was related on the Alberty side by marriage. I have a little stuff on the McCoys and a lot on the Albertys. Get in touch if you are still interested. lindafrench6@suddenlink.net

Thanks,
Linda French (nee Gaylor)

Hopefully you can help me. I noticed the name Douthits and believe that my 5x greatgrandfather, Martin DeWitt of Virginia married an Ellen Douthit/Douthal once he moved to the Darlington District of South Carolina in the mid 1700's (1755/55). I would love to be able to find the Douthits in South Carolina and be able to tie Ellen in with the DeWitts. The Darlington District is just south of the border between North/South Carolina. Can someone help me?

My many thanks in advance,
Linda DeWitt Hughey

This woman was my great-grandmother. I am one of the great-grandsons mentioned.

The author was my grandmother, Theil Conner Hamm.

The two of them are buried together, with my grandfather, Charles Wesley Hamm, here in Ardmore, OK.

Grandmama was a Cherokee. Her husband, Woody Conner, was an Osage, the son of the famous Billy Conner.

She fell victim to senility (Alzheimers??) in the 1960s. I remember her as an Indian woman in her rocking chair, revisiting times from the past that only she could see.

Till their deaths, both women wore their brown (not gray) hair down to their ankles, brushing it out twice a day and braiding it into a bun on the back of their heads.

Thanks so much for posting this.

Bruce Hamm
Ardmore, OK

A note on the spelling of CONNER, CONNOR.

You'll note that my grandmother, Theil, spelled her mother's name and her brothers name as Conner. She spelled her father's name CONNOR.

We, the family, think she did this purposely.

In the 1930s, Woody ran off to California with another woman, deserting his wife and children. We suspect my grandmother changed the spelling of her name out of anger towards her father. Despite his desertion, when Woody died, my great-grandmother got on a train to San Diego, CA and brought his body back to Oklahoma for burial. I guess the last line of the biography explains why she did that.
J.U. ALBERTY was born March 20, 1857 and died October 27, 1906, according to his gravestone. (see attached photo)

He is buried in the Alberty Cemetery on a bluff overlooking the Pryor Creek, near the present-day community of Sportsmen Acres, Mayes County, Oklahoma. At his burial, this populated area was known as Cherokee Nation, I.T. (as Oklahoma was not yet a state).

As our many of the tombstones here, Mr. ALBERTY's marker lays on the earth and is quite weatherbeaten. Do you know more about him? (I am only assuming he was male--not female.)

There are three Alberty cemeteries in northeast Oklahoma: one in nearby Adair County and the other in nearby Rogers County.

It is John ALBERTY's "Miller Application" and it lists data about his parents, Johnson & Caty (Hood) ALBERTY, and his brothers and sisters:

Here's an excerpt:

" I claim in my own right, my father Johnson Alberty, my mother Caty Alberty, by brother Joshua Alberty, my brother
George Alberty, my sister, Mary Alberty.

Are you married?

SEE: Indian Pioneer History Collection Of Oral Interviews
1937-1938

Before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, a good part of it was known as Indian Territory (I.T.) and made up of several Native American nations. As its pioneers aged, Oklahoma took steps to preserve their history. In the mid-1930's the
Works Progress Administration (WPA) sent out more than 100 writers to interview over 11,000 residents about their migration to I.T. and experiences. The personal histories of these early Oklahomans are fascinating. Not just Native Americans, but people from many nationalities were interviewed.

Many of these transcriptions are online. I went to the Pioneer Index's search engine and typed in keyword ALBERTY and found several listings:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/search.htm

More data about the Pioneer Index can be found at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/about.htm

NOTE: Check often, as this site is constantly updated as biographies are added by volunteers.
The State of Arizona has online a searchable death/birth index, and amazingly, they show the actual birth certificates. There are a few ALBERTYs mentioned. I include info about one here. (I am not related, just passing this along in hopes it helps a descendant researcher)

Birth Death Index:

http://genealogy.az.gov/

Birth certificate online for Ernest Henry ALBERTY, Jr., born October 6, 1917 in Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona to Ruth (WAKEMAN), age 31, born in Walnut Hill, Connecticut and Ernest Henry ALBERTY, age 34, born in Greenwich, Mass., an army field clerk. Little Ernest was their third child.

Direct link:

http://genealogy.az.gov/azbirth/446/4460072.pdf

Since my stir fry is still cooking, I went to the Social Security Death Index but didn't find any ALBERTYs by that name--either born in 1917 or born abt. 1883.

I did find a Ruth W. ALBERTY on the SSDI. Because the Ruth WAKEMAN ALBERTY on Ernest's birth certificate was born around 1886, this may be the same one:

RUTH W ALBERTY
birth: 06 Aug 1886
death: 15 Nov 1973
Last residence/zipcode: 93950 Pacific Grove, Monterey Co., CA
Card Issued: CA

And California's death index at:

http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi

has this slightly different death entry on Ruth W. ALBERTY:

Birth date: 08/06/1886
Death: 11/18/1973

And also on the CA Death Index is this:

ALBERTY, ERNEST HENRY
Born: 11/12/1884
Mother's Maiden Name: BENSON
Birthplace: MASSACHUSETTS
Death place: Los Angeles County
Date of Death: 10/17/1943 at age 58.

If anyone has additional info on this family, please share on this board for other researchers.

Mattie REEVES, 1924-2005, dau. of Moses and Clemmie ALBERTY, Oklahoma

Found this in the February 1, 2001 online publication of the Pryor Daily Times Newspaper, Pryor Creek, Mayes County, Oklahoma, at:

http://pryordailytimes.com/articles/2005/02/01/news_content/...

Copyright laws prohibit me posting it here, but the particulars for gen. purposes are:

NAME: Mattie Ruth Reeves (with a sweet photo online)
DIED: January 20, 2005 - Sunday, in a Claremore, Rogers County, OK nursing home, at age 80.
BIRTH: August 6, 1924 in Pryor, Mayes County, OK.
PARENTS: Moses and Clemmie Alberty.
BURIAL: January 2, 2005 at the Ghormley Cemetery, arrangements by Shipman's Jim Green Funeral Chapel.
SURVIVORS: Two sons, three grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by parents, six sisters, and one infant brother.

Hope this helps another researcher. Hmmm, I wonder what her mother's maiden name was and WHICH Moses Alberty was her father. There are several Moses Albertys in Indian Territory (pre-statehood 1907). I'll update this post if I found out more later.
