In the previous post it was said:
"I spoke with Ethel Winifred Albin several years ago and I have also corresponded with her fellow researchers who indicate that there was never any evidence found that Delina was a Shepler. In fact the Shepler family has no evidence that John and Magdelena ever had a daughter named Magdelina. This connection was just speculation between Ethel and other researchers but was never proven."

Well It is a new day! much has been learned in the past year or so.

My research began with the Sheplers, basically with Mathias, Philip and Peter. Prior Shepler researchers placed Malinda Magdalena or Magdalina as the daughter of John and Magdalen/Magdalena Shepler who was a sister of Mathias, Philip and Peter. Two other sisters have been identified.
I did not know anything about the Albin family until a descendent of William Bruce Albin and Malinda Magdalina Shepler provided me with much information on both the Albin and Shepler families.

Therefore I believe anyone looking at the Albin record can take the fact that William Bruce or William Jr. married Malinda Magdalina Shepler to the Bank.

I do not cast any shadow on the work of Ethel Winifred Albin, as others who have written books have made incorrect parent, spouse and children relationships. Case in point, Dr. John C. Smock Phd. made an error in placing Leonard Smock b. 1730 as the son of his brother John who was born in 1732 and Dr John S. VanVoorhis Md. made an error as to my gg grand mother Elizabeth Shepler's father.

Yes, mistakes have been made in the past, as researchers it is for us as we find them to make the proper corrections for the benefit of others.

In my post I did not mean to ruffle anyone's feathers.

This is in reference the entry regarding William Albin's wife as being Magdelina Shepler.

Ethel Winifred Albin included a reference in her book about the wife of William Albin. I will insert the quote exactly as it appears in the book.

"3. William, Jr. born ca 1746, married Delina (?), died ca 1796, Nelson County, Kentucky. At the time of his death his wife's name was Delina (Magdelena?) but she may not have been his first wife. He bought land in Pennsylvania from Mathias Shepler, son of John and Magdelena Shepler, whose land in Frederick Co. joined William Albin Sr. Delina may have been a sister of Mathias but we have no records."

I spoke with Ethel Winifred Albin several years ago and I have also corresponded with her fellow researchers who indicate that there was never any evidence found that Delina was a Shepler. In fact the Shepler family has no evidence that John and Magdelena ever had a daughter named Magdelina. This connection was just speculation between Ethel and other researchers but was never proven.

The idea that she might not have been his first wife is because of the age category that she was given in the census made her too young to be the mother of some of the older children. Of course it is possible that the census taker made a mistake and put her in the wrong column also.

Ethel was a careful and competent genealogist who did not make many mistakes. When she had proof of something she cited it and when she made assumptions she indicated them.

Of course this period in history is very difficult to nail down as records are rather sparse. Much research is based upon educated guesses and intelligent assumptions. In fact even the sons of William Albin Sr. were based largely on assumptions.

"William Albin (1)

Five men, who appear to have been the sons of William Albin have been located, only one of whom for which there is any proof - John was named as his son in the deed when William's land was sold. No records have been found that might indicate that there were daughters, but the wide spacing of the supposed sons, might suggest that there were some."

Most of her assumptions were based upon similar traditions that existed in the various family lines and naming conventions that were similar within the various lines. She considered this strong evidence that they were related.

None of this is out of line in genealogical research because sometimes this is the only evidence that exists and we must weigh what we find and make a rational assumption.

The danger is when these assumptions (even though they are good ones) are later accepted as absolute facts. Even Ethel did not consider these to be incontrovertible facts. She was merely recording what she found and what she assumed so that the next researcher could build upon it.

Delina's surname was merely a wild guess based upon the fact that William Albin Sr. had a neighbor lady named Magdelena.

I have seen other places where her surname is referenced as Godfrey but I would like to know the theory behind that reference.

Please be careful in your research! Label assumptions accurately and don't assume that every source is ironclad. These days if you publish something on the Internet it will be copied by 500 people by next week and considered the gospel truth by the first of the year.
As I understand Malinda Magalena or Delina as she was referenced by a lady who wrote a book on the Albins, was the daughter of John Shepler and his wife Magdalene(a). William Albin Sr. married Mary Bruce and lived near Winchester, VA next to the Shepler family. About 1772 Mathias Shepler (John's son) & his two brothers moved to Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA at about the same time as Magdalena and William Burce (Jr.) Albin and William Bruce (Jr.) bought 160 acres of land from Mathias. William Bruce Albin then sold his land to John Shepler and moved to Nelson Co., KY.
Prior to now I had Malinda Magdalena's year of death as 1816 however another Albin descendent believes it was about 1813. Which is correct I cannot say beyond reasonable doubt.

Mathias Shepler and his father John are some of my gg whatever grandfathers, with Mathias' granddaughter Elizabeth married my gg grandfather. Of interest is that Malinda Madalena had a sister Mary Margaret and another sister Jane? Nancy Jane? also known as Agnes.

Thanks for attenpting to help me. The only person I have to get info on my dad is my mom and she can't remember somethings so I will give you what I do have. My dad Dwayne Edward Albin was born on May 3,1957 or 58,not positive on the year? His mother was named Daloris. Her maiden name was Fournier.and Daloris mother was named Ireane. I am unsure of his fathers name but we believe it was Darryl. He died when my dad was young. His dad's brother was named Harry Albin. I do know that my dads grandmpa was a commercial fisherman and he died at sea of a heart attack. They lived in Crescent City for the most part and my moms believes that is where my dad was born but it's also a possibility that he may have been born in Carson City,NV. My dad has a brother named Darryl Alan Albin (he had a nickname of Pab) and was married to a woman named Charlotte. My dad also has a sister named Charlene. they all lived in the Crescent City area. Also I know that my dad spent time in the California youth athurority as a teenager. hopefully some of this may be of help. i do know that my dad moves often so he is a hard man to track down. Thanks again.

Hello Jennifer,

I found my Sam Albin in 1880 census with his fam. living in
Kansas. they must have moved back to Ind. later. The brothers of Effie mentioned in Census were Milroy and
Wilbur. Sam and his wife Minerva were young so no doubt they had more children. If your Albins were from Ind. it could be from the same line. there are a lot of Albins in Ind.
Maybe your father knows of these Albins.
Let me hear from you, Regards, Alice
Swiss descended Albins from Indiana

My paternal ancestors include Albins from Switzerland who settled the Seymour, Indiana area by the 1850s. My great great Grandmother was a Mary (Briget) Albin daughter of John and Mary Albin. She married John Anthony Betzler (Batzler). I believe that one of her brother's was Peter Albin, born 1848, possibly in Berne, Switzerland. I would like to know more information about this family and their European orgin. My great grandfather indicated that his mother Mary Albin was Italian.

Interesting. I am in Cumberland Co. IL which is adjacent to Coles and my family has lived here since 1871 (one member was here as early as 1850) yet I was not aware of any Albins in Coles Co.

Here is my line:

William Albin m. Mary Bruce
William Albin m. Delina (?)
William S. Albin m. Ginny (Jane) Enlow (Nelson KY - Harrison & Putnam IN)
Joseph Albin m. Rosannah Sheeks (Nelson KY - Harrison & Putnam, IN)
James M. Albin m. Mary J. Goddard (Putnam, IN - Cumberand, IL)
Joseph L. Albin m. Margaret Hart
James S. Albin m. Florence Royer
Glenn S. Albin m. Dolores Stuckey

What is your ancestral line?

Mine matches yours through Nelson Co. KY and Harrison Co. IN but then mine moved to Putnam Co. IN and then to Cumberland IL. I also know that several members of Joseph Albin's (m. Rosannah Sheeks) family moved to the vicinity of Gentry Co. MO.

There is nothing line specific in the pronunciation. It's not as if they are separate families.

Here is my line:

William Albin m. Mary Bruce
William Albin m. Delina (?)
William S. Albin m. Ginny (Jane) Enlow (KY - IN)
Joseph Albin m. Rosannah Sheeks (KY - IN)
James M. Albin m. Mary J. Goddard (Putnam Co. IN - IL)
Joseph L. Albin m. Margaret Hart
James S. Albin m. Florence Royer
Glenn S. Albin m. Dolores Stuckey

There are still a number of Albin descendants in Putnam Co. IN and when we visited there several years ago I discovered that virtually all of them pronounce the name "all" while my branch (James M. Albin and descendants who came to IL) pronounce it "al".

So here are both pronunciations found within a group that is definitely connected. My guess is that it has much more to do with regional accents than anything else.

I try not to include information that is unsubstantiated. I try to always cite my sources so that others can verify my info. All of my data on your family line came from one book. "The Virginia Albins" by Ethel Winifred Albin. This book was published privately in 1989 and is now out of print. They are extremely hard to come by. Most of her data is well documented and sources are given. However, no one is perfect so please try to verify any information you collect.

I hope there is something here that helps you.

Please let me know if you find any errors in my data.

Randy

Like the other poster says, it takes more info to pin down which Albin family and then even which branch you're referring to.
The one I'm most familiar with is my own line. They originally settled in VA, left for west of the Blue Ridge to get away from Lord Fairfax quit rents, then on hard times moved to western Pennsylvania with some of the Bruce's. Then after the revolution they went to Nelson county KY with the Bruce's and settled around Cox's Creek. Then they immigrated to Harrison county Indiana. There is an Albin road not far from Corydon in Harrison county in the general area where many of the family resided and they had big families so there are many who came from there. And, there are still a bunch there today.
My line went on to Coles, IL, then on to Johnson, MO.
Do you pronounce the Albin name as "Al Bin" so the Al is like the man's name, or do you pronouce it like "All Bin" like all or every one.
That's a bit of a clue as to which branch you were from if you start with the early Virginia Albins (the one's associated with the Bruce's)

My Grandmother Jane was a Williamson and the Williamson came from Scotland back in the mid fifteen hundreds and over the many years the Williamson's and the Albin's married right down to my Grandmother Jane, which might account for the move back to Scotland.
Hope this helps.
Hello Brenda.
There is not much that I can tell you about the Albin family of that time. I can tell you that from the time the Albin family came to Ireland about 1542 that they were buried at Kilmore Church, right up to the time of my Grandfather James. The men of the Albin family from that time up to and including my father married into the Williamson family, they came from Scotland a few years afer my family settled in Ireland. I have not looked at the message board for a long time, but our address over there was Rockmacraeny Richhill Co Armagh. Up to the time that we left Ireland that was where my family lived. I was at Kilmore Church a few years back and the Albin family is on a large marble slab dating a long way back. Other than this bit of information I don't think I can be of much help.
Cecil

Thank you for the reply. I've never visited with the Albins in Indiana, which is crazy because I don't live that far away now. But then again, even there I am sure I have relatives, Albins and Hedges, I don't know any of them.

My father's name was James Albin Crislip, Sr. His mother was an Albin, but both his parents died before I was born.
As I said in my previous post, we always said Al-bin.

Here is my line as I have researched it. Can't guarentee it is all correct, but we seem to be rather distant cousins.

William m Mary Bruce
William m Malinda Shepler
George Henry m Margaret Bruce
William T m Sarah Gwartney
John Albin m Caroline Williams
Elbert Elonzo m Anna K Hedges
Elsie LeNora m John Ward Crislip
then my father, James Albin Crislip, who also has a son, my 1/2 brother, James Albin Crislip, Jr.

If there is anyone out there with information on my line I'd love to share correspondence, especially on Elbert Albin and Anna K. Hedges.

Most of my records refer to Harrison, Indiana.

Melissa Crislip

I have been following this thread and though I have nothing new to add that others haven't given about the history I just wanted to mention that I am from the same lineage. My group of Albin family are from Comanche County, Texas. Vernon Albin was my dad. He grew up there and I have traced the family in that area back to the mid 1800's.

Ken Albin

I am looking for close relatives of Mayvis Oline Albin
(maiden name). She was a sister of my father Vernon Albin
in Texas. She had at least one son but I do not know his name. If you can help, please contact me at albink@bellsouth.net

Melissa,

My fiance is an Albin who descended from Ebbert Alonzo Albin. I think that makes you second cousins. Her father is named for Ebbert's son William (from his first wife) who died in the 1918 influenza pandemic. Her line comes from his second wife Mary Mossler.

If you're interested, I have some good pictures of Ebbert and his family on my site:

http://www.jimvajda.com/family/ps02/ps02_275.html

Most of my info on him comes from The Virginia Albins.

Hello again Cecil,
I should have asked you if you have a Stewart Albin or a William and Lydia (man and wife) in your family tree.
Connie

Hi Cecil,
My ancestors came to Glasgow from Armagh in the mid 19th century. They may or may not have come from Richill, but definitely appear to have been farmers in that part of the country.

Any information you have would be appreciated.
Connie

do you have any of the specifics. Jacob has been a very puzzeling character as the stoutenburgh book "A Documentary History of Oyster Bay" indicates his father was a Gomez Van Nostrand. I have been hoping the Albin line might shed soome light on this.

John Van Nostrand
