The Albrecht family moved around Europe before immigrating to the United States. Andrew Albrecht, born in Switzerland in 1847, came to Cavalier County, ND with his second wife, Frances Kaufman, born in Holland.
Andrew farmed at Marion, South Dakota, where their eldest son, Johann, remained.
Andrew owned several farms in the Alsen area. He would buy land with enough money to make the down payment until he was land poor. One of the farms was Albert Albrecht's and another is presently Lloyd Albrecht's. When Andrew died he left a quarter of land for each of his children. He donated land and money to build the Salem Mennonite Church at Alsen.
The had 11 children: Katie, born 1874; her quarter of land is presently the Verlin Albrecht farm.
Anna, born 1876, married Peter Senner fra the Starkweather area.
Frances, born 1878, married Peter Kliewer.
Peter, born 1880, married Regina Senner.
Maria, born 1882 and died in 1908. Henry, born in 1884. Joseph, born in 1886 and married Eva Spenst of Alsen, ND.
Albert, born 1889, married Mary Bimson.
Carolina (Carrie), born 1891 married Frank Hiebert. They lived in Alsen for many years and then moved to Walhalla, ND.
Jacob, born 1895, married Amelia (Molly) Rund.
Joe had a threshing crew and also played in a band at the local dances. It was at one of these dances that he met Eva, Jacob and Anna Spenst's oldest daughter.
Eva was born in 1900 and grew up in the area. She and Joe were married in 1925. They adopted two of Eva's sister's children: Charles, born Sept 11, 1923 and Jeanne, born Jan 11, 1926.
Their own boys are Verlin Milton Albrecht, born May 30, 1927; Harvey, born July 30, 1928; Robert Clinton, born Oct 26, 1931; Loren Edison, born April 23, 1935. They attended Moscow Township and Langdon schools.
Loren married Jane Stephen and had two boys. Loren worked in Kansas and Missouri and later came back to North Dakota. He was killed in a car accident in 1968.
Robert married Marion Herbel and they have eight children and live in the Alsen community.
Harvey married Caroline Begley, has four children and lives in Bismarck. Jeanne has four girls and lives in Kansas. Charles and his wife Dee settled in jackson, MN with their children. Joe farmed until he died in 1951. Eva and the boys continued to farm.
Eva remarried in 1964 to David Heinrichs of Crystal City, Manitoba and died March 12, 1981.
Verlin served in the Air Force fra 1942 to 1956 and he set a record for fixing brakes on an aircraft in record time. October 16, 1957 he married Altie Kays, born Jluy 12, 1937 to Edwin and Helen Kays at Sarles. Altie attended Glenila and Calvin schools.
They have five children: Kevin, born 1958, graduated fra Langdon HS in 1976 and attended SSS for two years. He married Ruth Squires 1980 in Minot and they live in Cheyenne, WY.
Jacqueline, born 1959 graduated fra Langdon HS and is owner of Needle Discoveries. She also raises Beefalo cattle.
Keith, born 1960, graduated fra Langdon HS in 1978. He married Linda Sturlaugson in 1984.
Jesse, born 1965 graduated fra Langdon HS in 1984.
Verlin and Altie have farmed on Joe and Eva's farm since they were married. They are Amway distributers and raise Beefalo cattle. --recorded 6/85
