I just found your post and phoned my mother, Ramona (Parker)
who married Melvin Alday. She is now Ramona Liming. I am Melvin (Mel) and Ramona Alday's first daughter, Roxanna Dale Alday, b. March 4, 1958 in Quincey, FL. My mother told me she was with Mary Lou Morris when she gave birth to a baby boy three days later, at home. I've read the rules on here and not sure if I'm within the guidelines, but I can get "official" documented information from my mother. The geneology of her side of the family is well-documented. If Melvin Alday was your great uncle, that makes my mother your great aunt. (I am not as experiegnced in geneology as some; Saul Workman, who is my the son of my cousin by marriage, thinks I am his aunt. Go figure.

If you can tell me any of the family members in Southport, Florida, I can tell you if they are related to the Alday family of Aubrey and brother, Ned, and Ned's sons, Chester, Jimmy, and Jerry. As for the Indian connection, I've traced the lineage back (Alday) to the Revolutionary War and before and don't find a definite Indian connection. This is not to say there isn't one, because one of the maternal lines could very well have been Indian. Maternal lines were Johnson, Bridges, Faircloth, Jones, Blocker, Womack, etc. and they came from Virginia to Burke Co, Ga, to Wilkinson County, (drew land in Butler Co., Ala) Baker Co. Ga, (then split up and went to Butler Co, Ala, some to parts of Mississippi, and some to Decatur, Seminole Co., Georgia.

Hello, my friend. Please go back and read all of the messages included in this thread. Ralph Alday of Georgia apparently put forward this story without any hard evidence or proof thereof. I have discussed this with members of his immediate family. Mostly your historical names appear correct except for the earliest names of Rayn/Rain Alday and Red Berry of Tennessee. There is absolutely no evidence that I am aware of that supports this purported Cherokee origin in Tennessee premise. All of the documentary evidence indicates that the family came down from Virginia to Georgia. The early family roots going back to Virginia are well established by the existing records. Our root family goes back to Josiah Alday/Allday of Georgia. Good luck with your research and be careful with putting too much faith in the unsubstantiated Indian tales which abound. Possibly there may be Cherokee blood in the family, but not from that source as indicated. Much like you, I would truly love to see any documentary evidence along those possible lines. Hope this helps, Paula.
Best regards, Walter Goss

As you note, 'tis true. I think I have so noted elsewhere. Thanks for the input. Josiah Allday may have given up his militia commission because of the approaching Revolutionary War. He appears to be a signatory to a 1774 petition from men in the Parish of St. George in the Province of Georgia which suggests he was uncertain about the wisdom of publicly going against the Crown. And such an issue was of possible negative impact to the continued good standing of his officer's commission--what do you think? Sincerely, Walter Goss

This second marriage to Seth Hatcher and relocation to Orangeburg, SC, places the grand matriarch of the original Virginian "ALLDAY" family in the same vicinity and just across the Savannah River from the lion's share of the early ALLDAY family which relocated from Virginia to Burke Co., GA, and settled in the vicinity of Augusta, GA. Both Seth Hatcher and Elizabeth Perrin Allday Hatcher apparently died in Orangeburg, SC. The root ALLDAY family of early Georgia was comprised of Josiah Allday and Anne Womack who came down from Lunenburg Co., VA, sometime during the 1760's.

Check the 1850 Baker Co., GA Census which includes Redmond as the Head of Houshold, along with his mother Rhoda and his brother James. Hope this information is helpful.

Hello Bruce! We are definitely kin. My great-great-grandfather was Redmond Wilburn Aldy/Alday/Allday. But please be advised that upon close scrutiny there is no evidence to support the notion of an O'Day connection as first (???) put forward by Ralph J. Alday. Redmond was the first of the family to settle in northeast Attala Co., MS, around the Shady Grove area. Apparently, that is approximately the time and place where the change in spelling the surname seems to have occurred--the "Aldy" spelling almost always suggests a family member who originated in Attala Co., MS. After Redmond W. Aldy died, it seems the rest of the family moved further down into the county and all settled around the small farming community of Sallis, MS. Some of the family still farms there today. And the Aldy name is still in common use to this day. Best regards!

From what I can gather there are two origins to the name Alday. One comes from the British Isles, and the other from the Basque. My family line is of Basque origin, but I have little knowledge of my family past my grandfather, Angel Alday. He moved to this country at a young age from his hometown of Bilbao, Spain. If anyone has any information regarding this Alday tree, please contact me.

Interesting. I have a photocopy of a family tree submission that is in the Georgia archives that lists Redmon O'Day, born Ireland, md. 1788 near Chattanooga. Do you think the surname O'DAY is incorrect and that Aldy or other spellings are not related to the purported Irish origins? Thanks for your help.

John P. Alday was a troop carrier pilot during WWII, 99th squadron, 441st Troop Carrier Group, IXth Troop Carrier Command, US Air Force. In 1944 he resided in Cumberland, Missouri; current homestead unknown. Dutch historians and US veterans are interested. Who has info, and can get us in touch with Lt Alday or a surviving family member. We have a statement and report of an incident over Holland, 23 September 1944, when Lt John Alday was co-pilot on a C-47.
We found a person named John Paul Alday in Dunedin, Florida, present age 82, but unknown if it is the right one.
Thank you, greetings from overseas.

New to all of this, so I am quite surprised to find my "family" so soon... Redman "Red" O'Day and his wife Rain Deer are my great-great-great(?)grandfather's parents. My great-great-great grandfather (is that a proper way of saying that?) was Rain (Rayn) O'Day who was married to Red Berry. Their son Redmond "Redman" Alday married Sarah E. Ferrell, who was my great grandmother's parents. My great-grandmother was Josephine Georgia Artelle Aldy, who married Asa P. Robertson.

I just received this information on a recent visit to my father's family in Mississippi. I would be interested in receiving any other information on the Alday clan. Some of the info I have was compiled by Ralph J. Alday from Bainbridge, GA.

Just this afternoon I found the connection between my Texas via Burke Co GA Alldays and the Aldays in south Georgia - Bainbridge area. I always figured they were part of the vast John P. Allday tribe who stayed behind when everyone else went to Texas just before the Civil War. Have been trying to find this connection for weeks. Today I realized it was Benjamin's descendants!. I kept being thrown by the Irish stuff when I knew it all went back to Henry the Emigrant somehow. Thanks for the confirmation!!

Who prepared the family tree submission which you found in the Georgia State Archives? Has it been on file for a long time or is it a fairly recent submission? I, too, have found a family tree which includes the O'Day origin: "compiled" by a Ralph J. Alday on 18 Nov 1968 (1202 E. College St., Bainbridge, GA 31717). His family tree states the Redmond "Red" O'day was a blacksmith and a farmer, married in 1788 in "S.E. Tennessee Near Chattanooga." However, I have been unable to find any further documents along this line. His data appears to be incorrect and inconsistent with all of the documented data that I have seen since then. Like I said, there was a time when I thought that family tree appeared to be credible. I just don't know where the O'Day story with the purported Irish origin began? But it just doesn't fit with further research which actually takes the family back to earlier dates and different geographic places of settlement. For comparison purposes, please note that Josiah Allday actually obtained a commission as an ensign in the Georgia State Militia of Augusta, GA back in 1768. A few years earlier, "Josiah Alday" married Anne Womack on 14 Jan 1760 in Lunenberg Co., Virginia. What do you think?

For purposes of comparison and discussion, the early Aldy/Alday/Allday family clearly dates back to the much earlier period of Colonial Virginia. At least some originated in England. I, too, have seen traces of the family name in German locations. The Aldag name is an interesting variant, possibly. However, the root family has been in America for at least several hundred years variously and most commonly under the name Aldy/Alday/Allday.
