> Is the Mayflower Descendant series something separate
> from the link you included?

The link I posted is for the files that I have compiled listing the consolidated contents of a number of genealogical journals. They are not the journals themselves.

Mayflower Descendant (which most professional genealogists, as well as writers for and editors of the major genealogical journals, refer to as MD) is one of the journals for which I have compiled a consolidated contents file. MD is one of the nation's major (and one of its oldest) genealogical journals, published by the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants beginning in 1899. It is the premiere scholarly journal of Mayflower research, including articles on Mayflower families and other New Plymouth Colony familes, and hundreds of articles containing contemporary records such as vital, church, and graveyard records, as well as probates and deeds. Some of the records are abstracts, but most are literal transcriptions available nowhere else in print. MD includes records pertaining to most early families of southeastern Massachusetts, not just Mayflower families.

MD is found in many libraries with large genealogical collections. The first 30 volumes are available online to members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and NEHGS is steadily adding more volumes.

Many experienced researchers who routinely deal with early families of southeastern Massachusetts own complete runs of MD and are also subscribers.

> Is it something that I can view on line?

The article that I cited is not available online, as it is not in the public domain, and that volume is not yet available on the NEHGS site for their members. If you go to the web site in the last line of my signature, and use the "Email comments to" link at the bottom of that page to send an email to me, I will be glad to send you a PDF of that article, since I already have scans of those pages on my hard drive.

Dale H.
Definitely look up that Mayflower Descendant series on Henry - if you haven't seen it I suspect it will answer most or all of your questions.

Amateur researchers often encounter problems of this nature. That is why professional researchers and those writing for the genealogical journals generally begin a project with a thorough review of published literature. Learning how to locate what has been published about a person or family is another matter. I am working on a tutorial on the subject for my web site, but one starting point is to gain familiarity with the contents of major and minor genealogical journals using my files which list the contents of many journals:

http://plymouthcolony.net/resources/periodicals.html

Dale H.
Dale...

Again...thank you for replying. This is where my concerns lie and I'm trying to factually substantiate what's been written in "informal" trees within the family.

I've been able to "prove out" my ancestry back to Alice Alden b. July 12, 1733 in Needham, Mass. Married Jonathan CAPRON.

Previous information omitted an ancestor between Alice and Henry.

It appears that she was the daughter of John ALDEN, b. abt 1705 in Dedham, Mass.

John ALDEN appears to be the son of Henry ALDEN...

This where my family information is of concern to me. Earlier work puts John as the son of John...other information I've located (based on the marriage to Jonathan Capron) link him to Henry.

Which leads to questions about his lineage. My thoughts are that he may be the non-Mayflower branch, but would like the corrected information before putting this into my tree and presenting it to family members.

I have other Mayflower ancestors and am not hung up on trying to prove it as true fact. I'm concerned about accuracy...if disproving the family "tradition" is the result, so be it.

Thank you for your help with this.

Debbie

> I seem to be linking Alice Alden to Henry Alden.

Which Henry? Is he the one who was in Billerica in 1683-84 and who died in Needham 18-Feb-1729/30? Or are you looking at some other, later Henry?

The former had a daughter Alice born 17-Mar-1694 [Billerica VR 11], who married at Weston 09-Apr-1719 Thomas Collier [Natick VR 114]. That Henry was not a descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower. See Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes and Alicia Crane Williams, "Alden Notes: Henry, the Non-Mayflower Alden" (Mayflower Descendant, 43 (1993):21-30, 133-138; 44 (1994):27-30 181-184).

Dale H.
Dale...

Thank you for helping me sort the Mary/Mercy question out. I was concerned about it...this helps.

What I'm trying to disprove (can you believe that??)is that my line descends directly from Plymouth John Alden through his "Johns" to Alice Alden then on to me.

I seem to be linking Alice Alden to Henry Alden. Seeing worrisome conflicting information that makes me question whether Henry can be David's son. About the only way that I can feel comfortable is by confirming the marriage date of David and Mary. In that case, my family would descend from John Alden....but through David instead of his brother, John.

However...I'm finding too many pieces suggesting that David and Mary could not have been his parents if one of the birth dates for Henry is correct. On the other hand, if the date is actually either of the 1671 or 1673 dates (which I've found reported), it would be possible.

Perhaps I should be searching equally hard for birth confirmation of Henry to David and Mary??

Re: David Alden m. Mary (Mercy Southworth)

> Has anyone found a viable source for the marriage date
> between David Alden and Mary (Mercy) Southworth.

David Alden married Mary Southworth. Mercy was Mary's sister, who married 12-May-1658 at Eastham Samuel Freeman [MD 6:201].

No record has been found of the marriage of David and Mary. They were probably married by 1674, because daughter Ruth, apparently their oldest child, was born about 1674 based on the 29-Nov-1694 date of her marriage [MD 9:25]. David and Ruth were likely married in Duxbury, but the earliest book containing Duxbury vital records {labeled "General Records Dates Included 1645-1749 Town of Duxbury") does not include this marriage, and is missing a number of other vital records of events that can be presumed to have occurred in the town during those years.

There are a number of errors in the published Duxbury vital records. For corrections to those errors of which I am aware see:

http://plymouthcolony.net/resources/vrerrors.html#duxbury

Dale H.
Which Alden ancestor are you hoping to trace back to John?

Be aware that not all of the Aldens in early Massachusetts were descendants of John of the Mayflower. Some were descendants of Henry Alden, who was in Billerica by 1683-84, and who died at Needham 18-Feb-1729/30. See Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes and Alicia Crane Williams, "Alden Notes: Henry, the Non-Mayflower Alden" (Mayflower Descendant, 43 (1993):21-30, 133-138; 44 (1994):27-30 181-184).

Dale H. So, as it turns out, I do not hail from the Alden line, but from the Bean and MacBean Clan.
I wish I could be of some help, but I wish you well in your quest.

> I'm wondering if the birth records here on ancestry.com can be
> used as "proof?"

That depends upon who you are trying to prove it to. If you are trying to join the General Society of Mayflower Descendants you will probably have to provide copies certified by the Town or City Clerks of the locations where the events occurred.

Dale H.

> Yes, the Samuel Allen of Bridgeport believed to have lived
> 1660 to 1750.

Samuel was born in Bridgewater 04-Dec-1660 [MD 2:91; Bridgewater VR 1:30], and he died in Bridgewater 02-Dec-1750 [MD 14:181; Bridgewater VR 2:429].

> There has - somewhere - been mention of Rebecca Cary as his wife.

Although the town record of the marriage omits the surname of Samuel's first wife, whom he married 02-Dec-1685 [MD 2:244; Bridgewater VR 2:29], it was supplied by Bradford Kingman in 1876 [NEHGR 21:225]. Although some lists of early Bridgewater marriages have proven flawed, this one seems sound - I have not found problems with it. I do not know what sources Kingman used other than town records.

> There is also mention of a Mary Alden

Samuel's second wife was sometimes supposed to be the daughter of Joseph Alden of Bridgewater, but there is no record of any such child. Writers including Judge Mitchell said that she was "perhaps" Mary Alden, but many (such as John H. Allen in 1915) later repeated the attribution without qualification. The GSMD does not accept a daughter Mary for Joseph Alden.

> And, another possibility is a Mary Pratt.

I have seen that, but do not recall where it first appeared in print - in 1980 Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes pointed out that no proof has been found for either Alden or Pratt as Mary's surname [MQ 46:19]. The History of Weymouth shows Mary, dau. of Matthew and Sarah (Hunt) Pratt as marrying (---) Allen. That is from Matthew's 1711 will [Suffolk Co. Probate 18:109], which named one of his daughters as Mary Allen, and perhaps that led to identification of that Mary with the second wife of Samuel Allen.

Although Samuel's second wife was a Mary (named in Bridgewater town records as the mother of his last six children [MD 14:181]), her surname remains unknown.

Dale H.
If you have not done so I would suggest checking the three Alden Silver Books published by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, If your Eliza is a descendant of John and Priscilla then, given the time of her birth, she might be found there. Bear in mind that she might have different ancestry, such as being a descendant of Henry Alden of Billerica and Dedham/Needham, which is not a Mayflower line.

Dale H.
> More complete information can be found in The Mayflower
> Descendant, 43:21+, "Henry, The Non-Mayflower Alden," by
> Esther Littleford Wooworth-Barnes and Alicia Crane Williams.

I am rather late coming into this thread, but wanted to note that a seminal article, part of which concerns Henry Alden of Billerica and Dedham/Needham, was published more than 90 years before the MD article (and noted by Woodworth-Barnes and Williams). It was:

John Eaton Alden, "Descendants of Captain John Alden of Boston" (The Dedham Historical Register, 12 (1901):74-94).

The Dedham Historical Register is a little-known journal of high caliber. Fourteen volumes were published by the Dedham Historical Society between 1890 and 1903. It published historical articles, genealogies, town and church records, gravestone inscriptions, and other articles of interest to genealogical researchers concerned with Dedham and nearby towns. All volumes are in the public domain and may be found at sites such as the Internet Archive Text Archive. It is one of my favorite obscure journals, second in that category only to The Genealogical Advertiser.

Dale H.
Yes, the Samuel Allen of Bridgeport believed to have lived 1660 to 1750.

There has - somewhere - been mention of Rebecca Cary as his wife. There is also mention of a Mary Alden, believed (but not proven) to be the granddaughter of John Alden the Pilgrim. And, another possibility is a Mary Pratt.

Based on your memberships, etc, perhaps you have access to records and skills that might sort out what is truth?

An earlier post of mine describes the "evolution" of thinking as noted in the several volumes of Waldo Genealogy.

I would like to continue this thread. The Abigail Allen, who married Shubael Waldo is a daughter of this Samuel Allen and is my wife's 4th great-grandmother.

It would be really nice to solve this puzzle.

I think he might not have gotten on because you said he didn't match up with the "official" line; John Alden on the Mayflower. If it was just a Alden project then if you didn't match at least you might get some leads on your real line back. Or, whose to say if you could prove your Alden line on paper but someone along the way wasn't true to their mate. Who knows until your tested enough people from that line to know it. I could be looking for a shoe salesman working at Fields Store in Jackson, MI around 1947.

Hi Carole -

The project is Family Tree DNA Mayflower Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Mayflower.

A little background. My earliest Alden ancestor is Henry of Billerica. I descend from his son John to his son Silas to his daughter Rebecca. Her descendants do not carry the Alden YDNA so I found a male descendant of Henry to test. He does not match Mayflower John.

Good Luck,
Kay
