My great grandmother was Alice Mary Alderton, born in Gislingham in 1898. She married Frank Reed in Greenwich London in 1920 and my Grandfather George Frederick Reed was born in Gislingham in 1920. The marriage did not last and Alice moved to Essex to live near her sister Lily (who I knew as Aunty at the Water tower as they lived next to one!) Lily looked after my Grandfather while Alice was working. My Grandfather grew up in Essex with his cousin Ron Fox. Later Lily's son Ron moved with his family to New Zealand. My parents followed a few years later and we are all still here. Elijah and Mary Ann also had a son Frederick George Alderton b1896. He was killed in the 1st world war.

Hi again Bronwyn

I think it might be helpful if you start a new thread in this group entitled "Aldertons of Suffolk" and seek help there. There were quite a few Aldertons from that area I believe, so all hope is not lost.

Kind regards
Penny

Dear Penny

Many thanks for your reply & information. Obviously our Aldertons are not related because of course it would be ridiculous to suggest that 3 children would be put in the workhouse from the family.

I certainly don't have any evidence that our 2 families are related. My info re birth dates etc is from Charles' marriage certificate & from numerous conversations with my g'mother about her parents during which she told me he was born in Suffolk & had a sister after whom she was named. I sourced Charles' mother's maiden name from Family Search, but perhaps incorrectly as I'm certainly not an expert in this area.

I'm waiting for a booking to access Find My Past at my local library, which may or may not be of help, but like many before me here may have to abandon the search.

Thanks again.

Bronwen

In 1841 your Charles Alderton was enumerated in Woodbridge Union Workhouse, Nacton, Suffolk, aged 13, next to next to Mary Ann Alderton aged 11, next to Caroline Alderton aged 7, described each as pauper.

In the meantime in 1841 in North Street, Brightelmstone, Sussex, (about 120 miles away from Woodbridge) Charles Alderton of Sussex and his wife Frances Bignall were enumerated as below: They already had a daughter Mary aged 2. Charles was working as a tailor and in the 1851 census he describes himself as house proprietor. I hardly think if he had any other children, and disregarding the duplicate names, that he would have 'left' them in a workhouse in Suffolk.
Charles Alderton abt 1801 Sussex, Tailor
Frances Alderton abt 1806 Sussex
Edwin Alderton abt 1826 Sussex
Alfred Alderton abt 1828 Sussex
Adelaide Alderton abt 1830 Sussex
Agnes Alderton abt 1832 Sussex
Thomas Alderton abt 1835 Sussex
Maria Alderton abt 1837 Sussex
Mary Ann Alderton abt 1839 Sussex

If you have any evidence that your Charles was their son, of course if would be helpful to share it.

I wonder whether we're talking about the same family, although I have only scratched the surface with my research really. As my great grandparents on my mother's side were all born outside Australia there are some difficulties. My Charles Alderton jnr (ggg'father) was born 29/2/1828 in Woodbridge Suffolk, baptised 1/6/1828 St Leonard's Shoreditch. Sister Caroline born 8/12/1833, baptised 5/1/1834 as above. Their father's occupation is given as bricklayer on Charles jnr's marriage certificate (1854 in Melbourne) & Charles jnr's occupation as mariner.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Kind regards
Bronwen

I have no record of Charles Alderton and Frances having any children born in Suffolk. I have all the census entries for Charles and Francis, and information from the London Gazette issues 20561 and 19954 (which can be found by searching for London Gazette + Online or +archives).

The children for them that I have are born in this order between 1825 and 1842:
Edwin Adams Alderton
Alfred Adams Alderton
Frances Harriet ADELAIDE Alderton
Agnes Ann Adams Alderton
Thomas James Alderton
Amelia MARIA Alderton
Mary Ann Alderton
Frederick William Petters Alderton

It might be useful if you could explain how come you believe they had more chidlren; Charles and Caroline who were born in Suffolk and where they were staying in the censues.

Otherwise, if you can tell me when Charles and Caroline were born I can have a look for you and see if I can throw any more light.

Kind regards
Penny

I am helping a friend research his family. The info he has so far is that one of his direct relatives was named John Alderton and he was one of 4 or 5 chuildren of the Earl of Alderton. This John was supposedly a British soldier who fought in the American Revolution. At some time during the war he switched sides and fought for the Americans. He was captured by the British and spent some time as a guest in their infamous prison ships in New York harbor. After the war he was awarded land in western Virginia. Do you know anything about an Earl of Alderton? If so, which Alderton is it? Is it the Sussex Alderton? Do you know anything about this John Alderton or his siblings? Regards, DCS

I am looking for decendents of William Alderton from Morgan Co. WV. He was arrested and taken as prisoner of war to Wheeling Atheneum Prison and from there moved to Camp Chase, Columbus Ohio on May 2, 1862. My GGG-Grandfather made that same trip with William. But he died at Camp Chase. I was interested to know if there were any documents or lore in the family of their experience there.
Thanks

Hi Graham and Sally,

My Great Grandfathers wife was Elizabeth Alderton and she was born in West Hartlepool, not far from Chester-le-Street, her Father I believe was Albert Anderson, born in Wacton Norfolk in 1847 and Mother Jane Shaw 1848. I am not sure if these are related in anyway, but there was also a Charles Alderton born 1841, probably much too old to be your grandfather Graham.

Regards
Terry

Have got back to my 3xGt Grandfather, William Ollerton b c 1796, who married Elizabeth Keely.
Would be very interested to have any information (especially more recent)on various branches of his family; Henry,b1825 who went to Isleham, Cambridge, then Horbury, and Wakefield, Yorkshire with his son Jesse Taylor.

William, my 2xGt Grandfather, b1824, married in the name of Allinton, Susan Camel. Two of his sons, Edward, b 1863 and James b 1866 went to Heeley, Yorkshire. Any info on their descendents would be much appreciated.

A third son, my Gt grandfather Elijah, b 1857 m Mary Ann Palmer (Pearce). My grandmother was their third daughter, Rose Anna, b 1884, so I have the full family tree from there. I know nothing of their other daughters, except the names of their husbands which I have gleaned from the index, (so I could have got them wrong!)So sad to have all these Great Aunts that I never knew!(except Nellie)

Edith, m Benjamin Hadley 1901
Emma Ellen, m Ernest Betts 1909
Rose Anna m Charles Herbert Harvey 1907
Jane b Sept 1886. Rose lived in Botesdale, as did Aunt Nellie,(Gurdon) I believe.I don't know about the others.
Any information would be much appreciated.

Dear Ray

I tried emailing you a couple of times but I seem to frequently experience great difficulty sending and receiving emails from Australia! Do have any similar difficulties with emails to/from England?

I tried to send you a photo in the first email, but at the moment it seems we might not be able to email each other directly. I have spent a lot of time a year ago researching the Roney family and all that I could find at that time, on some of where your lot ended up was from the IGI... I’ll put my notes on William Roney below;

With parents in 1841 and 1851. Not found in subsequent censuses.

IGI; A William Roney Marriage to Phillis Johnson 02 JAN 1860 at Saint Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, England - no source information.
IGI; and there was a baptism to a William Roney in Brighton (02 JAN 1864 Brighton) with parents William Roney and PHylis Fuller.

1861 37 High Street, Brighton, Sussex, (The Pier area), Sussex was mistranscribed as Somerset several times *
James Johnson abt 1784 Boxgrove, *Somerset, Head, Carpenter Journeyman
William Johnson abt 1823 Fletching, *Somerset, Son, Labourer General
Emily Johnson abt 1830 Bursted, *Somerset, Dau-in-law, 31, Milliner
William Roney abt 1838 Sidlesham, *Somerset, Son-in-law, Butcher Journeyman
Phillis Roney abt 1831 Lambeth, Surrey, Daughter Law Worker?
Kate Orrall abt 1794 Lambeth, Surrey, England Visitor 67, Invalid
Registration district: Brighton, Sub-registration district: Kemp Town
Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 592; Folio: 113A; Page: 28; GSU roll: 542667.

Re their children.

Existence of their children discovered through an IGI Individual family record with no source, however the mother of William is noted as Phyllis Fuller. I suspect the person who submitted the information had made a mistake about the mothers name as William and Phyllis were living with her parents named Johnson at one point. There were no registered marriages of any Phyllis Fuller on the IGI or England and Wales index to a Roney.

Children were listed as;
1. James William Roney
Birth: 04 OCT 1862 Brighton, Sussex, England, Death: 14 APR 1941
2. William Roney
Birth: 02 JAN 1864 Brighton, Sussex, England, Death: 21 MAY 1955
3. Albert Roney
Birth: 18 MAR 1865 Brighton, Sussex, England, Death: 20 DEC 1957 Of, , South Australia, Australia
4. Charles Roney
Birth: 14 OCT 1870 , South Australia, Australia, Death: 15 DEC 1953 Collie, Western Australia, Australia

Mahala Roney, daughter of James Alderton and Sarah Boxall, would have been my 3rd great grandmother. Mahala was a first cousin once removed of Edith [Alderton] Nesbitt who was also known as E. Nesbit / E. Nesbitt and Edith Nesbitt / Nesbit – the very famous writer of horror stories and childrens books (I keep forgetting whether there are two t’s in nesbitt or not). Edith’s lifestyle at the time was certainly very avant-guarde as she lived in an open-marriage with one Hubert Bland.

I have a lot more information I can share with you about E Nesbitt and the other branches of the Roneys but I really look forward to hearing back from you with any more details of your branch of the Roneys.

Excitedly,
Regards
Penny
Hi again Lesley,

Its getting very interesting and feasibly it could be possible for Henry's father Arthur Joseph Alderton to be referred to as Joseph on Harry's marriage record.

I can give you alot more information about this branch of the Aldertons and how they are connected through their ancestors to the famous writer "E Nesbitt" aka Edith Nesbit. I traced the link and have a copy of the marriage certificate.

Thoughts about Henry's war service records;
A link to the National Archives Kew, Richmond, London which might contain Harry's records;
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycatalogu...
I think it references some soldiers with surname Alderton, beginning with Bertie Alderton through to William Alderton
(Piece details WO 363/A 167 if the link doesnt work!)
(WO: Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies
Division within WO: Armed forces service records
WO 363: War Office: Soldiers' Documents, First World War 'Burnt Documents' (Microfilm Copies) )

You are welcome to communicate with me in private - I'll try and send you a private message.

Best regards
Penny

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for reply.

Does the marriage certificate show Harry's occupation? (and his wife's?). They would be of interest.

Looking at death registrations on limited index on Ancestry there was a death of an Arthur Joseph Alderton in Brighton Sussex in 1916 (of the right age). Also a death of a Louisa Alderton in Brighton in 1916 (of the right age).

Just my thoughts... If these two who died 1916 had been Harry's parents their departure would have given Harry "licence" to travel away from the area where they had lived. Not knowing currently Harry's occupation at the time, perhaps he had at some point before marrying, been working at Brighton Extra Mural Cemetary, (Lewes Road, Brighton), where his grandfather and father had both worked.
Arthur Joseph Alderton's father Harry had become a gardener at some point, then secretary of the Cemetary.

Look forward to hearing back.

Kind regards,
Penny

Dear Lesley,

There were two Harry Aldertons in the Sussex 1901 census; both had fathers who were called Arthur Alderton.
When you manage to get the marriage certificate of your Harry who married Ethel (Fishlock?*) the deciding factor will be the occupation of your Harry's father Arthur, unless the name of the father includes the father's middle name. To confuse things further, I wonder if your Harry may have been married as Harold Alderton as I suspect Harry was sometimes not a real birth name but a nickname, like Jack was for John.

"Arthur Alderton 1" (aka Arthur Head Alderton) was married to Emma Steers; them in 1901
1901 59 Carlyle Street, Brighton Sussex
Name Birth Year Birthplace Relation
Arthur Alderton abt 1874 Brighton, Sussex, Head 27yrs on original, Cabman - Groom
Emma Alderton abt 1877 Brighton, Sussex, Wife
John Alderton abt 1896 Brighton, Sussex, Son 5yrs on original (a John that could be called Jack)
Ellen Alderton abt 1898 Brighton, Sussex, Daughter (Nel?)
Harry Alderton abt 1898 Brighton, Sussex, Son
Mary Alderton abt 1899 Brighton, Sussex, Daughter (shortened to May?)
Registration district: Brighton, Sub-registration district: East Brighton
Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 925; Folio: 17; Page: 25.

"Arthur Alderton 2" (aka Arthur Joseph Alderton) was married to Louisa Lewry.
Florence Ethel Alderton c1884 England

Looking for information on Florence Ethel Alderton, my great grandmother, who I am guessing was born during the 1880's. She had at least 2 children, Marcus Anthony Bickerdike b1904 Gloucester & Violet Irene Bickerdike b1908 Taunton, Sommerset. She was married to Charles Alfred Bickerdike b1884 London.

If anyone has a Florence Ethel Alderton from this period on their tree I would be delighted to hear from them.

Many thanks
Sinead

don't know if there's any connection as so far I have limited information, but my husband's great grandfather was Harry Alderton, born in Brighton. I have no birthdate or parents details for him yet, but his son Raymond was born in 1920, so I would be looking around the 1890s probably.

Harry married Ethel Fishlock and they moved to Taunton, Somerset.

Lesley Shiner

Hello,
thanks for your reply. My mother-in-law (Raymond's daughter) has been staying with us this week so I went through it again with her. It turns out that Ethel Fishlock's mother married Mr Fishlock AFTER Ethel was born, and he was Ethel's stepfather, so it is very possible that Ethel Gilling is the one. Raymond was indeed born in Taunton, but we were not sure where his parents were married, but after talking to other family members it was most likely Taunton.

Will apply for the marriage cert now and let you know! Thanks again for your help.
Lesley

Hello again,

I've received Harry Alderton and Ethel May Gilling's marriage certificate this morning - definitely the right couple as their witness is Susan Fishlock, Ethel's mother!

They married in Nov 1918, Harry was 23 (so birth year 1895), and his father is listed as Joseph Alderton (deceased) - no occupation. I'm wondering if this would link to your Arthur Alderton 2 as you also list him as AKA Arthur Joseph Alderton, and the birth year would be correct? I wonder how Harry ends up in Taunton though?! Do you know of any other family members from this branch who appear in Taunton? I will be checking the census again later today!

Thanks for your help,
Lesley Shiner

Hello,

Harry is recorded as a Soldier in BEF, Ethel's occupation is left blank, as were her father's details. Still trying to find out what brought Harry to Taunton, whether he was stationed nearby, etc.

Lesley

Hi, I am a descendent of Ernest George Rendell who had a sister Emma who I believe married and migrated from England to New Zealand. Do you know if Emma's parents were George & Elizabeth Jane (Way)? If so, I would love to hear more about her. I am in contact with a cousin in England, and neither of us have any information about Emma or her descendents and would love to find the missing link in our family tree.

Kind regards Katrina MacDonald (nee Rendell)(femkat@yahoo.com)

Hello Terry,

I don't know if there is a connection but the Charles Alderton you referred to in your previous e mail may possibly be my great, great grandfather.

I have seen a copy of the 1891 cenus for Sacriston in County Durham and at that time Charles was 52 years old and living with his wife Elizabeth. He was a horse keeper and one of his sons was William my great grandfather.

The cenus shows that Charles came from Norfolk but if his age was correct then he must have been born 1839 or 1840? Also his place of birth is shown as Wheaton but seeing as the document is hand written it may well be Wacton?

For your information Charles son William had two sons and three daughters. The sons were Joseph and Charles. Charles was my grand father and Joseph was Sally's.

If you have any further information please let me know.

Kind regards

Graham Alderton.
