Hello, I'm sorry I am just seeing this now. I haven't been doing much research lately. I don't have any info on Alma, but I am guessing my grandmother would - she is still alive and well. Please contact me at madrian1@comcast.net and we can discuss.

The information on the Alessios that I have is that my great-grandmother Maria Alessio married my paternal great-grandfather in 1899 in NYC. She came from Acri, Calabria, Italy, which I visited in 2003. Wonderful people!

It was hard communicating since they speak a mix of Italian and Albanian (ancient Albanian). Yes, we are really Albanian descent. Many genetic similarities to my family.

My grandfather was Luigi Bisignano, who came from San Demetrio Corona NW of Acri. Still Albanian region.

You can search the Ellis Island Records or ancestry.com to look up those records. I will do a bit more research for you. Most of our ancestors from Acri are related. They seem to have all intermarried for hundreds of years in the small village. I felt so relaxed and at home there.

Ciao, cugina!
Barbara Bisignano Monroe
Cave Creek, AZ

He had a brother from Italy named Ferdinando who never came to the USA any part of his life. My name is jennifer. I am the middle child of 3 girls. 2 of the females are professionals in the health field. My mother is Sicilian and her entire family is in WNY. All of my father's side is still in Milano, Italy. I met them about 15 years ago and hunted them down through pics and letters. Write back.

Your post has been forever ago. I am just recently researching the family. Frank and Annie Alessio are my Great Great Grandparents. My line comes from their son Albert Freddrick. If you have any pictures or stories about anyone in the family I would love to get with you and chat about them. I am the last grandchild on this side of the family, so the stories are very few and far between. I keep thinking what a strong woman Annie must have been. Would have loved to know her, or any of them. Do you know anything of Alma?
Thank you.
AShapcott.

I am Elizabeth JONES married to Warwick JONES (son of Constance Adelaide and Keith JONES). Constance Adelaide is the daughter of Alma HONEYBROOK. I believe Alma is the daughter of a SANDILANDS. Being an in-law I am not fully conversant of the family history, but I have heard all these names mentioned including GALLUS. Constance's memory is fading. I would be nice if we could get everything on paper while she is still able. Constance's sister is Beverley, who is in the last stages of dementia.
I have four children and Warwick's brother has two.

Searching for Alessio's

I have been trying to locate family members for my father via the internet. My father's family name is Alessio. His father Eugenio Alessio born in 1900 had a sister Francesca, among other siblings and had come from Italy on the Giuseppe Verde through Ellis Island in 1924 to Queens, New York. He was the only one in his family that came over at that time. His family had lived in Rome and moved to Palermo, Sicily. He had been a doctor in Italy and from what we know there was a town square named after his family. We have no contact with any family members on my grandfather's side and on behalf of my father, I am trying to see if I can find any information or family. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Attaching pic of Eugenio and wife Felice Mancuso

I know this is an old thread, but I do have more info on the Alessios form Acri.

There is part of a spreadsheet that I found from a Michael Alessio. He painstakingly placed some microfilm on a spreadsheet. It lists births, deaths and marriages. I found a bunch of info on my branch of the Alessios.

Greatgrandmother Maria Alessio married my greatgrandfather Luigi Bisignano. They were married in 1876

Her parents were Giuseppe Alessio and Domenica Foggio.

Giuseppes parents were Domenico and Maria Morrone and had many children and their Marriage dates are as follows:
Married
Vincenzo Sep 18 '66 unsure
Nunziata Rosa Dec 15 '72 Nicolo Mangano
Pietro May 26 '74 Maria Filemena Altomari
Giuseppe Dec 16 '76 Domenica Foggio
Annuziata Nov 10 '78 Gennaro Pietrangelo Gistaro
Luisa Sep 28 '84 Carmine Annunziato Nigro
Angela Feb 1 '91 Natale Carmine Ferraro

If you email me at bmonroe739@msn.com I can attach this spreadsheet. It is very useful. I found the exact house address where they lived in Acri.

Barbara Bisignano Monroe
My father is Guiseppe Richetti, father Francesco, and mother Erminia. My mother is Rafelina Schipani, mother Elvira, father Fortunato. She has eleven brothers in sisters, the majority are still in Italy (North).
Hi, I'm searching for my grandfather's family who's last name is also Buffone and came from Calabria. My grandfather was born in Calabria. His mom passed away and at 7 or 8 years old when he and his father emigrated to Sicily where his father remarried. I'm not sure from which town he came from, but we are now very interested to know. We were all under the impression that our grandfather was born in Sicily. It was only a few months ago where we found out that he was in fact born in Calabria.

If you have any info, please share.

Thanks

Hi Linda,

I just returned from San Giorgio Lucano, which is on the border with Basilicata and Calabria. During the 1880s-1900s, it belonged to Calabria, but modern maps place it within the boundaries of Basilicata.

I have pictures of this little town on my website (email me at juliewoodin@yahoo.com if you want the address). While I was driving there however, I also went through San Giorgio Severino, which is only about 25 kilometers away from San Giorgio Lucano. Do you know which your ancestor came from?

I hope this helps!
Julie

I too am a descendant of the Alessio family. I have been doing genealogy for many years and have tried to get information from different family members but they seemed to be unwilling to share information. My great grandfather was Frank Alessio and he came from Calabria around 1890-several years later his wife"Clara" and son"Carmen" came. I would like to know if they all came through Ellis Island or if they came through some other port. I saw on Frank's death certificate that his fathers' name was Fedile and his mother was listed as unknown. Would be very grateful for any information and will share what little I know.

Hi Patricia, So very glad to hear from an Alessio cousin. As I said in my message my ggrandfather came from Calbria around 1890, leaving a wife and baby, he sent for them when he got enough money, which took about 7years,my grandfather was born in 1898 in this country. I have tried to find out how he came and if they came through Ellis Island, so far no luck. My ggrandmothers' maiden name was Buffone and she also came from Calbria. I would love to take a trip to Calbria-I hear it is very beautiful country.
I also found that some of the family spelled the name two ways, "Alessio""Allessio". I am still trying to get records from Italy but I am told even the government is reluctant to share information. Also are you a born and raised Tennessee girl-my maiden name is Gilliam and a lot of Gilliam's came from Tennesse. I haven't been able to pin-point a specific location. If you still want to keep in touch you can e-mail me at rfyeager1@yahoo.com.
Alessio Cousin
Lorraine

Hi Dave, I know what you mean about the name Frank, we also have several but we have more Sammy's and Louie's.
My g-grandfather had a cousin who came before he did and was the one who helped him with money to get to the U.S. His name was Santo Alessio. On Frank's naturalization papers the two witnesses were 'Michellon and Magnoni Natali. Have you tried to get records from Italy?
Lorraine

Hi Linda,
I'm not sure where my Alessio came from other than it was Calabria - I have found that my Italian family does not like answering questions about where they came from and who we are related to. Getting information has been very difficult. The older ones are all gone now so it will be more difficult. But if we can all come together and put our information out for everyone maybe we can find a connection. My ggrandfather (Frank Alessio b.Dec. 15,1862, son of Fedile Alessio,I have not found who Franks mother was) came to Walla Walla Washington around 1888/89 - he left behind a wife Clara Buffone) and a very young son (Carmen b. 1887)- he sent for them in 1897 my grandfather (Santo "Sam") was born in Walla Walla in 1898 and there were four more children - Rose, Mary,Theresa and Joseph. Other than this I haven't been able to trace further back. I am going to try to get information from Italy but I have heard that is quite hard.

Hi, Dave- Read your message about all the Franks in our family and it made me laugh. My dad Roy Alessio was on the phone today with your dad, John Alessio checking on his progress after his surgery. I told your dad that I just saw your message two days ago. David I have been e-mailing our cousing Giovanni Alessio in Naples for about 2 years now. He is the son on Carmine who is the son of Uncle Giovanni (who is our grandfather's, Carmine and Francesco's, Uncle that they came to America with back in 1906. Giovanni then went back to Italy and married and had this this cousin Carmine, Francesco and Rosa. This Uncle Giovanni is a brother of our great grandfather whose name was Rosario and his wife was Maria Teresa Patella. And our great-great grandfather was Carmine Alessio(b.1825) married to our great, great grandmother Maria Teresa Oliverio (b.1830) His father, our great, great, great grandfather was Tommaso Alessio (b.1775) married to our great, great, great grandmotherTeresa De Fazio (b.1785) Cool, huh! I got this from the cousin Giovanni who is in his 40's whose dad Carmine, he's in his 70's is doing the family tree. I did give him information of your Aunts and Uncles and your brothers, along with my brothers and sisters too. My e-mail is abhigday@jps.net.
Alessio Family History

There are evidently more than one Alessio clan in Calabria, and "Frank" (or Francesco) seems to be a fairly common given name, at least according to my Uncle Frank, my cousin Frank, my other Cousin Frank, and my brother Frank.
My grandfather, Carmine, and his brother, Frank, came to the US from Castelsilano, Calabria, in 1906, and migrated to Northern California. One or two of their cousins settled in West Virginia (I understand that somewhere along the way, many of the West Virginia Alessios became "Ellis"). I have so far been unable to find out the names of Carmine's parents. I don't believe my grandfather could be your "Carmen", as the dates don't seem to match up. My "Carmine" was born in 1886. But they may have been related.
Please feel free to email me. I'd be happy to compare notes with you.

Sincerely, Dave Alessio

Alessio Family Response

Hello Loraine...
My name is P. Alessio Smith I live in Tennessee, where I have always lived...My family name is Alessio, and my Grandfather who is deceased was named Albert F.Alessio and I think his father's name was Gustavo' Alessia, they are both gone now...but not forgotten...I haven't done a lot of research on their heritage or anything else but my sister has in the past!
I have been interested in this for a long while now...and decided to look it up and seen where you had some of the same questions I did...My grandparents were very little children when they came to the USA from the Ellis Island Port...his name was Albert Fredrick Alessio and her's was Ethel Mae Greene Alessio...they had two children a girl named Virginia Dale and a son (My Dad) named Albert Fredrick Jr. Everyone is gone now...except for my Dad, whom will probably outlive us all...he is 76 now! Glad to know that we still have family out there in search for more like us...there are very few left here in Tennessee, but I have searched and found lots more in New York City, if you like ...let me know and I will send ya the link that I have found recently for that...Ok
It was nice to read about another Alessio for a change...Please respond back and let me know what you come up with and I will do more searching for you too...thanks , A distant Family member, Patricia Alessio ;)

I was looking into Acri, Cosenza and I saw alot of material regarding Alessio. It's real interesting because my whole family is from there, and you would think that since is so small not many people would come from there or of all things be on the internet. It was great how the Alessio's traced their family name. I will try to do the same, but I know it's alot of work. Thanks.
Maria T. Mossa
(Sposato is my maiden name and maternal's grandfather was Cappello)
