Katherine I. (Kurty) Alexa
Katherine I. (Kurty) Alexa, 84, of Erie,pa,
died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Twinbrook Medical Center. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on November 6, 1924, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Cecelia D. (Jeroskie) Kurty. She worked at Erie Resistor during World War II. Before retiring, she was a nurse’s aid at Hamot Medical Center and also worked at Mount Saint Benedict and the Mercy Motherhouse. She also babysat for numerous children. She was a member of Saint Peter Cathedral and a former member of Saint Andrew Church and it’s Ladies Guild. She and her late husband were also founding members of Blessed Sacrament. Katherine was also active with Saint Mark’s Seminary Auxiliary. Katherine was an avid reader, loved playing pinochle and dominoes with her sons, enjoyed boating, and took every opportunity to go to Presque Isle even if it was only for a ride. She also enjoyed watching college basketball and baseball on TV. She was always open to new experiences like attempting to water ski in her 60’s, going to the Preakness, or trying a new restaurant. Her favorite saying was: “God will provide” and He always did whether it was spending time with family or friends and especially spending time with her grandchildren in Maryland. Her husband, Walter “Ladislaus” J. Alexa, preceded her in death, along with a brother, Walter Kurty and his wife Florence. Survivors include four sons, Michael Alexa, wife Betty, of Erie,
Martin Alexa, wife Kerry, of Silvers Springs, Md.,
Matthew Alexa, of Erie,
and Mark Alexa, wife Susan Moyer, of Erie;
grandchildren Brian and Claire Alexa; step-grandchildren, Alex and Sam Moyer and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves the “Fabulous Four”, Kathleen Spiegel,
Joanne Holmes,
and Jean Jones to cherish her memory.
Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brugger Home for Funerals LLP, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard. Services will be held there on Monday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. Memorials may be made in her name to the Carmelite Monastery, 501 East Gore Road, Erie, PA 16509.
