I know that this is a very old post. However, it is my hope to find more reseachers who may be looking for the same Alexander family.

I have a Josiah M. Alexander who was born about 1817 in Tennessee and married a Martha H. Dodson. She was born in Alabama about 1816 or 1819. They married about 1841, most likely in Perry or Hardin County, Tennessee. They moved to Jefferson County, Missouri about 1844 and are listed there on the 1850 census. They returned to Tennessee about 1852 and are on the 1860 census for Henderson County, Tennessee. Josiah must be dead by 1870, his wife and remaining children living at home are the only one's on the 1870 Henderson Co., TN census. Most likely he died in the Civil War or soon after, however, I find no service record for him in TN, although there were several Josiah Alexander's in TN. He may have separated from his family and went back to Missouri or Kentucky and entered service.

Briefly, I have the names of the children of Josiah M. Alexander and Martha H. Dobson:

Charles W. Alexander, b. ca 1841

Mary Margaret Alexander, b ca1845 (m. Isaac Marshall Nowell) She is buried at Oak Grove, Henderson Co., TN

Lucinda Jane Alexander, b. ca1848 MO d. bef 1860

John B. Alexander, b. Jun 1850 MO

Monroe Pierce Alexander, b. ca1853 d. 1926 ? Union City, TN ?

Susannah Alexander, b. Jan 1854 m. 1)Henry Powers 2)Jesse Pride. Susannah died 22 Mar 1927 in Hornbeak, Obion Co., TN

Mary Ann Alexander, b. ca1856

William H. Alexander, b. ca1859

Josiah M. also had a brother named John Linley (or Limley) Alexander, born 15 Nov 1818 TN and d. 22 Feb 1859. One researcher places him as a son of Azariah Alexander and Margaret Davidson McCracken from Mecklenburg County, NC. However, I believe that this John L. and my Josiah M. Alexander are the sons of Azariah's brother Henry O. Alexander and his wife Sarah Wallace.

The Alexander family is one of the most prolific families I have every researched. They had a lot of boys in each generation and passed the same names down. It gets terribly confusing trying to determine which was which and who belonged to whom.

John L. Alexander married Dolly Jane Garner and had a son John Wriley Alexander who was a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War. Several members of this family are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, near Lexington, Henderson County, Tennessee.
