I looked at more results. They are fairly inconsistent about where Jessie's father was from. So I will attribute that more to the fact that it doesn't look as if Jesse knew his father very well. He named his son after his step-father it appears. Of course, mayber there is more to it than that. Thanks for the info though, it has really helped.

Thank you for that information. I wasn't aware that this child even existed. Not only that, but I didn't know Solomon had been in KY.

I found it interesting that the 1900 census result for Jessie gives 'born at sea' as the birth location for his Father.

This opens up an area of further research for me - so thank you very much.
Solomon Aley also had a son by Maria named Jessie J. Aley who was born on July 19 1836 in Kentucky. The Indiana marriage records prove this.
I am tracing the Aley line as a collaterial. Jessie married for the 3rd time to my Della Merrill.

Was Mary Jane McAvena born abt 1896, and were her parents Samuel and Mary McAvena? If this info matches your Mary Jane McAvena then she may be the sister of my Cathaleen/Catherine McAvena born in Canada and moved to Onieda Co, Ny PRIOR to 1910.

In Sept of 1910 Cathaleen married WIlliam S Smiley of Oneida Co, NY. In 1919 William and Cathaleen moved with William's family to Lompoc, Santa Barbara Co, CA and they all lived there until their deaths. Cathaleen (McAvena) Smiley was my Great Aunt. My Grandmother was this sister of William Smiley. ALl of my family thought Cathaleen was wonderful and so I am trying to find out more about her and her family. She died 2 years before I was born, but I have heard stories about how super she was all of my life from my mother and all of her sisters. They grew up down the street from Cathaleen and were always over at her house. Cathaleen had a great sense of fun and fantastic sense of humor from the stories I have heard. SHe died in 1943 and is buried in Lompoc, in the Evergreen Cemetery next to her husband.

Thanks for any info you may have that may assist me in locating more info on her family.

Carrie
GA

Hi I'm from that little ol place across the pond, called England, I am an Aley, and have been building my family tree up on Genesreunited.com. I have traced my line back to Henry Aley c1700, who married a Mary Tarling, in 1727. between this couple and myself there are 100s of Aley's, most of which I either have on my tree, or know about but can not fit them in, The Aley's all seem to come from the Essex area, with just a few coming from Hertfordshire, the next county, what I'm trying to work out now, is which of these Aleys first left our shore for the USA,if we could find that link?,then we could have a hell of a family tree between us, any one got any info/ideas, one last thing, I have seen the name Aley in records dating back to 1550, look forward to hearing from some of you with your thoughts and info, take care, Mick Aley

Hi Jan. Have 100s of Aley's in my family tree, Essex seems to be where a lot of them came from, for I have them either born, married or died in the following locations, all covered by a fifty pence piece on the map, Moreton, High Laver, Lower Laver, North Weald, Bobbingworth, Harlow, Epping, Ongar, plus a few other places close by, my father was Harry William Aley, born 20/06/1920 in Chipping Ongar, would be nice to hear more from you, I can be found at www.genesreunited.com or at mickaley@aol.com.
Regards
Mick Aley

I think that C Hannahs result is a match. They are near to Pocahontas and that is where a lot of my part of the family settled. Good job.

I'm sorry for your frustration in the search. I know that this line Aley / Hanners has turned up a lot of dead ends for me as well. I think it is likely that Charity was probably born around 1853.

And the 1870 census gives me problems as well. I cannot find Susan (Hanners) Blackwell and her family. It is possible that Elizabeth is residing with her at that time and perhaps the records are lost.

So your husbands line is through Lafayette. I suppose I haven't given you anything you didn't already have. I would be interested in adding to my data for that part of the line. Did you know about the marriage with Elizabeth Rosenberger and Phillip Hanners?

Randy,

I have been searching the Hanners for over 35 years and feel that I am no further alone than when I last interviewed my husband's grandmother, who was the granddaughter of Lafayette Hanners. Her father was Elijah Thomas Hanner.

The 1860 census is a problem to figure out. I think that Charity's age should be 7 and I believe I have found her in 1870 in Randolph Co AR, with a different last name, of course. There is a female, C Hannahs - age 18 - born in MO working as a domestic servant for the Robert Martin family. In the next county over, Lawrence Co AR is Fayette Hanner and family in 1870. I am still trying to find Elizabeth in 1870.

My efforts to find the rest of the Hanners listed in 1860 with Solomon have turned up negative too.

Thanks for your reply
Barbara

Re: Solomon Aley in Wayne County, MO

I am so excited to hear from someone about this.

It looks as if you and I have uncovered a lot of the same material, let me see if there is anything that I can contribute to your benefit. Already, you have given me some information I did not have - namely the notion that Jacob Craiger is a clue that Kregger is not the only name I should be looking for. (Silly me.)

And could you tell me what Hanner's line your family is through? I would be very interested to see how we are related.

Ok, here is what I have:

1829 Marriage - Maria M Luttrell - Knox, TN
1830 Census - Solomon Aly - Claiborne, TN
1839 Land Purchase - Solomon Aley - IN
1839 Divorce (Maria Aley) - Owen, IN
1840 Census - Solomon Aley - Owen, IN
(Only 3 people are listed as being in this family, the ages are right for Solomon, Philpence and Lewis Aley.)
1840 Marriage - Philpence Kreggs - Owen, IN
1850 Census - Solomon Aley - Wayne, MO
(In addtion to Solomon and Philpence there is Lewis, Susan - my g-g-grandmother - Thomas Aley, and Jacob Craiger.

Lewis is the right age to have been the third person in the 1840 census and I guess that this is the son of Solomon and Maria. Susan evetually shows up as Suzanne Blackwell and marries into the Williams family. You have already commented about Jacob and I am excited to look into that more. And then we have Thomas - who I thought might have died.

1860 Census - Solomon Aley - Logan, Wayne, MO
(In addition to Solomon is his third wife Elizabeth Hanners, Susan, Charity, Benton, and Lafayette.)

My problem is that Charity and Benton are listed as both being 10, with Charity above the listing for Benton. THat might not mean anything and perhaps Benton is Thomas - though the names don't really match. It strikes me that Charity and Benton are probably twins, but who do they belong to? Could they belong to Philpence? Maybe she died in child birth. And indeed you are correct about Charity marrying Redmon Rice.

But what is interesting is that Lafayette Hanners is there as well. He is listed at the bottom, below the younger children. It makes me suspect that this is Elizabeth's son from her first marriage. Which would mean that Elizabeth is not originally a Hanner.

Also, on the same census, the next entry down, we have Lotty Hanners, age 24; Artamesa Hanners, age 3; and Hiram A Hanners, age 2. (I have had no luck tracking them before or after this time.)

I do show the following marriage in St. Louis, MO:

Philipp Hanners and Elisabeth Rosenberger, 16 May 1842. That is five years before Lafayette is born. So I think this is probably the same Elizabeth Hanners that marries Solomon Aley.

I hope that is helpful. (Sorry for going over information you already have.) And I do have a pretty good listing of Charity's and Lafayette's families from them downward and will be happy to provide whatever information you need.

And please, share whatever information you might have with me.

Randy

Hi,

I am just getting back to my Hanner/Hanners family research and found this query. I am trying to find Elizabeth before she married Solomon, their marriage date would be great too. I found a Solomon Aley who was born abt 1805 in Knox Co TN or not, but he did marry on 5 Jan 1830 to Maria W Luttrell in Knox Co TN. They divorced in 1839 in Owen Co IN where he is listed on the 1840 census (I don't have the family breakdown).

On 10 May 1840 Solomon married Philipena Kregger and in 1847 the probabte records of Owen Co IN list Soloman Aley as an heir of John G Kregger, others were George, John G jr, Lavina, Louisa and Peter W. I believe that Philipena was a daughter of John G Kregger sr and the Jacob Craiger on the 1850 census with Solomon and Philipena was a nephew

I think from 1850 to 1860 that Thomas H and Benton are the same person and that Charity Aley is really Charity Hanners and the birth date is off. Why? Because in 1880 there is a Redmond and Charity Rice with Elizabeth Hanners (mother-in-law)in their household. Most indexes and printed material say Elizabeth's last name was Hammers but I have studied the actual census records and do not think that is correct because just down the way on the same census is Fayette Hanners (from the 1860 census).

The Hanner/Hanners line is part of my husbands maternal family tree. Any help you can give me on them would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara Taylor

Aley's of Essex

I am researching my Aley side of the family. My grandfather was Herbert Aley, born in 1892 in North Weald (epping).

I believe his father to be George Aley, born in 1860 also in North Weald. His siblings were Francis and Gladys.

Does anyone have any more information on this family?

Thanks,
Jan
Aley & DNA testing

All you males with the Aley surname should do DNA testing at www.familytreedna.com. Go there & read about the surname projects. One of us researchers (male or female) needs to sign up as an Aley surname project administrator. Once that is done then anyone who decides to participate in the Aley project gets a discount on tests. Only males with the Aley name can take the Y DNA tests at either 12, 25 or 37 markers. I have done my sons & have found out that the 25 & better yet the 37 marker tests yield better results. The Y DNA tests trace the direct male line. I see that here on rootsweb there are the N.Y. & Beaver Co. PA Aleys & then there are the Frederick & Washington Co..MD to Ohio Aleys(of German descent). There is also that Texas Aley (also of German descent). DNA testing would reveal if these Aleys are descended from a common ancestor or not. There is alot of info on the familytreedna site. I would for sure look at various surname projects & see the various ways each administrator organizes their respective sites. Click on the highlighted web address. Some restrict the results, most others post them under results or Y Results on their sites. Maiden name Aley females can have their brother or father or male Aley cousin do the test. Think about it. Jo

My name is William Cullen Aley IV. I just did a random web search to see if there were any other Aleys out there and it appears that there a several of us throughout the US. As far as I know, the last three generations of Aleys here in Florida have been born and raised here in Jacksonville Florida. I don't know much about William C. Aley Sr. but surely there is a common ansestor somewhere down the line. I'd like to know more about us.

Solomon Aley in Wayne County, MO

I am looking for any connection to Solomon Aley, originally from TN - possibly Claiboren County - that lived in Wayne County, Mo between 1850 and 1860. At least those are the 2 censuses that I can place him there. I think he probably died before 1870.

He had a daughter named Susannah Aley, possibly a son named Lewis Aley, and another daughter by the name of Charity Aley.

His first wife looks to be Philpena, from NC. His second wife I believe is Elizabeth Hanners. Most likely her married name. If by any chance you are familiar with this family, or any Abey families in that area I would be interested in hearing about them.

I'm trying to locate information on an Ann or Annie Aley of Beaver County, Pa., who in 1838 released all claim to her father's estate, real and personal, lying in Springfield township, Mercer Co., Pa., to Armstrong Irwin of Mercer Co., Pa. Her father is not named in the document at the Mercer County Courthouse. This record was recorded in 1838. I believe she and Armstrong Irwin must have been connected somehow. I'm researching the Irwin family and feel that the Aley family must tie in somewhere, too....

Thanks!

I have traced my Aley family back to John Aley born c1754 in Essex, believed to be High Laver, and Elizabeth Buddard born c1754 in Essex. They married in High Laver, Essex on 30th January 1779.I know they had 5 children. My problem is I cannot seem to find who John's parents were. Has anyone out there got any ideas? or know who his parents were? I have a lot of information about the Aley's from 1779 to the present day. It appears that all the Aley's I have found were all born within a 10 mile radius of High Laver, Essex.I would be grateful for any suggestions of where I can look for further information? Thank you. Cosler), Isaac, John, Jacob, Hannah (m. Shuey), Abraham

Jacobs daughter Lydia m. Frederick Miller of Sharpsburg, Washington Co. Md.

The all moved to Beavercreek, Greene Co. OH where they died.

I hope this gives you a lead. Aley is kind of a rare name so maybe we tie together some place. Let me know if I can give you any more info.
