Re: Alfaro a Jewish name?/Mr. Leon

Alfaro is certainly not a Jewish name. The Al part means "the" in Arabic, whom conquered the Spanish and the Arabic are mostly Muslim and the faro part comes from the old Spanish means beacon. The Alfaro last name comes from the Spanish state La Rioja, whom has a lot of Basque influence. The Basques are one of the only Geramnic trbe descendants left in Spain. With all this, the last name Alfaro is most likely Arabic-Celtic last name. My last name is Alfaro and I have relatives who look like Alex Smith the qb for the 49ers, whom looks like of Celtic descent and relatives that look like Cesc Fabregas, who looks as if he is from Morocco. Overall, Alfaro is not a Jewish last name. One very common Spanish Jewish last name is Levy.

I've always been interested in my last name, but never got anywhere. The furthest I can get information about would be my father and we don't even talk! But myy uncle on the other hand, he told me that Alfaro was from my grandmother not my grandfather and she died before I was born. You are the first person i've come across that has the rarest last name and from EL Salvador. Maybe we can chat!

I am in wisconsin. All I know about the Alfaro name is that is is rooted from Moorish and Arabic. Literal translation from Spanish to English is Shoemaker. And in the town of Alfaro Spain- they were in fact horse shoe makers. This is where they get the family crest. They were never royal but were royaly employed- sort of. This is also where the next translation comes in. If you translate the name from spanish to moorish- it means horse. But there is another translation. Many often say that the Arabic translation is tower, but just as Mexican Spanish might say car- the Spanish from Spain would say truck. Same thing. The correct translation is Light House. The name is in fact rooted in the Jewish world. The name is Italian and Spanish. But we have to remember that the king of Sicilly was married to Isabella of Castille in the 1400's so there you are. After Italy threw their little tantrum during the plague outbreak and forced all of the Jews onto Italy's islands- most italians died and the Jewish lived due to clean habits and kosher cooking- then they were forced out completely for about 100 years or so. The first documented Alfaro from Spain arrived on Ellis island about 1919. Before that, there were plenty who came to this country after Columbus opened the doors to sea exploration to the Americas and elsewhere.

I actually thought it was a mix of Arab and Portuguese or Spanish.
There are Arab last names that start with AL and then the next part of the last name is the city or town from where they come from. FARO is a city in Portugal near Spain's border.
And since part of the Iberian peninsula was once ruled by the Arabs for 700 years it made sense to me.
But i guess there's more to explore.
