She now lives in Georgia but the rest of her family still live in Indiana. Maybe we could get together to compare notes.
Dear Richard and Michelle,
Forgive me for being out of touch so long. I certainly hope both of you are still monitoring this message board. The last exchange we had, Michelle was trying to get the LDS record of John Alfont's birth--which Richard thought might just be a guess on the part of a descendant. I'd like to know if you were able to get it and document either a year or place of birth, Michelle.

Even if we can establish that John was born in France, I'm not sure where we'd go from there (unless a specific town is documented). Wouldn't that be wonderful!

When I visited Alfont relatives in Indiana a few years ago, I was shown a sailor's water cask that had been handed down in the family and purportedly belonged to John Alfont. The legend is that he was a seaman.

Has anyone learned anything more about him?

Hope to hear from both of you soon.

Judy Winn
Alfont/Alfought surname variations

I have this Mrs. August Alfought that was found within an Obituary in Illinois. I believe her name is Augusta or Auguste. She was last known alive in 1953 as per obituary. In hopes of attempting to find her death, I am looking for a Alfought surname list and believe that this might be the closest match that I could find! I do not know Augusta Alfought's husbands name or where thwy are located! If anyone recognizes this name, i really would like to hear from you!!!

Hello Michele and Judy,
I've been kind of out of the loop on genealogy for a while here, with way too many other things going on in my life. But I've been reading your exchange, and just wanted to put in my two cents.

(1) I would be skeptical of the LDS record stating that John was b. 1770. Would be interested in knowing what you find this is, but my guess is it will just be some descendant's "guesstimate" and not an actual record.

(2) I believe the Cecil co. town in the census is ELKTON.

(3) The marriage record between John ALFOND and Mary DAVEY is recorded in a printed DAR compilation. I was in Cecil co. a few years ago and tried to run down the actual record, but without success. They didn't have it in the Cecil co. courthouse, though I was told it might possibly be at the state archives in Annapolis. The DAR list puts a question mark after "Davey." It also states they were married by "Cosden" who apparently is Jeremiah Cosden, an Anglican priest who served St. Augustine and North Sassafras parish in Cecil co. between 1794 and 1801. This is the southern part of the county, near Chesapeake City.

Well, that's about all I have to add--hope it helps.

Michelle, it was great to hear from you and know that someone else out there is trying to solve the mystery of John Alfont and his wife Mary Davey (Davis, Davies). Do you think it's possible to get a copy of the document showing his birthday and birthplace? So far I have nothing conclusive showing that he was born in France. If you do get something please let me know. The marriage record of John and Mary in Cecil Co. Maryland shows up on Web searches, but again we need a copy of the actual document.

I've come across the 1800 census record also. I assumed that the people listed were John, Mary, son William, and perhaps Mary's mother. Although the older woman could have been some other relative, or perhaps not related at all. I have searched Maryland and Pennsylvania census records of 1810 and 1820 for John and William and found nothing. That seems strange to me. Perhaps I'm just missing it. For some reason I assumed that Mary died shortly after William was born so he was their only child. Can't remember why I made that assumption.

If you'll send me your mailing address I'll be glad to send you a print-out of my entire Alfont (Alfonte) file. Would love to have yours also.

Maybe someday we can trace John's line back further, especially with more of us working on it.

Judy Winn

Hi Judy,
Sorry I didn't get back with you before this.
Here's what I've got re: John - according to LDS source, he was born in France abt. 1770. I need to get the actual record sent from Salt Lake City to the LDS Family History Center where I do research in order to get the details (hopefully!).
I have that he married Mary Davis (could be Davies/Davey) Jan. 18, 1798 in Cecil Co. MD. Their son, William, was born Mar. 26, 1799. I found John on the microfilm of the original handwritten 1800 Census for Cecil Co. MD. 'Place of Residence' was listed as 'Ellston' ( a little hard to read). Listed in the household of John Alfont:
under 10 yrs. of age: 1 male
of 10 and under 16: 0
of 16 and under 26 (incl. head of household): 1 female
of 26 and under 45 ( " " " " ): 1 male
45 and older: 1 female
(don't know who the 45+ female might be or if she's even related)

I only know about their son William, though it seems likely they had more children.
Wm. married Elizabeth Freeburn, and I have lots of info about all the branches from there. But I also have some gaps, omissions, and thanks to the abundant errors in public records & transcriptions of same, perplexing data from which I attempt to make reasonable deductions. I have a list of names that I can't place with certainty.
It would be great if you have info that would help unravel some of my mysteries, and possibly I could fill in some blanks for you.
Also, I would be happy to do look-ups at the LDS Library- just let me know.
By the way, Kevin is my little brother. :)

Your distant cousin, Michele
