birth of Eliza MaGill/McGill

Judge Judy says, "If it doesn't makes sense, it didn't happen." John (tanner)Algeo was living with his daughter Eliza Jane Cogsil at this death. This family should know where Eliza McGill was born. A rep of this family states she was born in Bridgville, Pa. A borough of Pittsburgh. This makes 18 connections of algeo family trees, misinformed. Bridgeville Pa makes sense, Williamsport does not. Does anyone have any better proof? I would love to know it.

Darlene, Good Heavens! My computer crashed and I lost your email address. I was getting papers ready for DAR and found a note from my aunt asking about a postcard dated July 28, 1898. It was from James and Harriet when they were in Kansas. It was post marked Hollenberg and my Aunt didn't know where that was. The note was written to Aunt Em and is on the back of the tin type of Eliza and husband.

I googled James and Harriet just messing around and found these post.

By the way I have a copy of GreatGranddad's Obit which tells about him running a stop on the underground RR. Don't know the other poster but would be glad to share anything I have with you. Ralph Hammond was my Grandmother's cousin and he and Verna Algeo did most of the original work on our Algeo line. I have all his records. He and I wrote often -that was before computers.

You can reach me at pkoomjian@cfl.rr.com

I am the grand daughter of Mary Emma Algeo Bennett d. of James Thomas Algeo and Sarah Ellis. James was s. of James and Harriet Newell Thomas.

I lived with my Grandmother and Granddad during the summer until my Nannie died in 1951. Never heard her talk about any Irish Algoe's living close. Don't ever remember going to graves of any relatives who were new to the country. Nannie and BaPa were the ones who kept all the graves clean and put flowers on them. I feel like I've been to every grave yard in Washington County.LOL

Again, if you would like any of my records feel free to ask.

Lucha Koomjian

Glad there is another Algeo researcher aboard. We seem to be thin on the ground.

Did you know that there is an Algeo group on Facebook? It's called "Im an Algeo are you?" It isn't really very active but interesting to hear of other Algeos in U.S., England, Scotland and Italy. Much discussion of how the name is pronounced.

As for origin, I continue to urge that all males with the last name of Algeo (or variant) have their Y-DNA tested at, for example, FTDNA. (last name Algeo because Y only passes male-to-male.) My brother, James Algeo, was tested and his y DNA grouping is pretty clearly Anglo-Saxon. But I think he is the only Algeo tested so far. I think at this point that such testing is the only way to sort this out.

I am sorry to hear that Ruth has passed. She and I were of the same line, and she kindly share some of her research with me.

Santa Algeo Traugott

Hi Robert! Always great to see another Algeo person researching out there. I will be glad to send you a copy of Verna's notes. My address is 3960 S. Higuera #129, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

We have no new answers or research breskthroughs to tell you about. I would caution you, that Ruth Magil has passed away, but posted some mis-information on your line here at rootsweb. She was quite ill and desperate to get her research done, but I am afraid that she just made too many assumptions. Please be careful with her information.

Also, please fo back to rootsweb Algeo page and sign up as part of the group to get posts when they are submitted (which is not so often these days). I am the group moderator, so when your message bounced, because you were not a member, I was informed.

I wish I had more good news to share with you! I will pass along your information to Darlene Algeo who is also looking at this line.

Marianne Bollinger
mamagack@hotmail.com

Marianne: My maternal grandmother was an Algeo, Sarah Ann Algeo; her line goes back thru Robert Fairman Algeo and Gregg Algeo to Western PA, in and around Beaver Falls. I was in touch with Verna in the 70's, when I was more active in genealogy. I'm retired now, and getting back into it, and very interested in extending my Algeo lines further back, and filling them out better toward the front. I may well be interested in paying $30 for Verna's files, which I once had at least a part of, so send me your address. I never did figure out where the Algeo's came from whether they were Scots, shipwrecked Italians, or French Hugenots (or however you spell it. Any light you or anyone could shed on this or any other aspects of Algeo history would be welcome. Thanks for your posting. Robert A. Christmas

There is a James H. Algeo who served in the Union regiment, Company G, 4th West Virginia Cavalry as Captain. He has an unclaimed Honorable Discharge Medal. His enrollment papers lists his age in 1863 as 38. Does anyone have more information about this soldier? I received a typed database listing of the W. VA 1860 Census which only lists a William D.
Sandy you could write me at d.algeo@swglobal.net and I can forward, what I find on charles and other algeo's of jefferson county. Like yesterday, I spent all day, looking in nooks and crannies, for the name of algeo. Some I print out, some I don't, some gets put in a unrelated pile. This is quite a pile and its not in order, hard to find. I just can't keep up with where I find what. I could post the websites, if I remember to write down. I've been searching for a spot I found some tax records at for a month, I have not found it yet. Also have some papers from the Verna notebook, this is past researcher, they would have to be scanned. What I have is just to much to type it all out
darlene algeo

I've done some searching for 1850 Algeo's around Jefferson and Washington county Ohio. In Cross Creek Township is a Samuel age 70 tenant born in Ireland. Then in Jolly township washington county is a John, wife Sarah, John born in Ireland. I don't know who these algeo's are, they must be related somehow, they don't fit in tanner's bunch. Sandy says there is a Charles born in Ireland, in Jolly township, so I guess they are related. how I don't know
darlene algeo

James Algeo was my 3g-grandfather. The ancestors between him and me all lived or worked in Philadelphia. Most of what I know about Algeos comes from my great-aunt's book, To the Waters Edge, mentioned elsewhere on this message board. I live in the NYC area and do not get to do much Phila area research. I have looked at your posts ; do you think you are an Algeo decendent?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Bits and Pieces: DNA Testing

I would like to encourage any men with Algeo surname to think about DNA testing, through an organization like Family Tree DNA.

We have a couple of different "founding legends." I believe the most commonly accepted one is that the Italian Jacobo Algeo came to Scotland in the 1400's and most of us descend from him. There is another theory that Algeos in Ireland are descendants of Spanish sailors.

What I have to contribute is that my Algeo brother had his DNA tested and it turned out to be classic Anglo-Saxon -- very little likelhood, although always possible -- of Italian or Spanish background. There is always the possibility of the "cuckoo in the nest" but it does raise questions to me about the standard assumptions of our descendancy.

So I would really love to see more Algeo surnamed men get tested!

if there is any interest in this, please let me know and I will pass on what information I have.

Santa Algeo Traugott

We are mostly finding lots of dirt, dust, and trash, as no one has lived there for years. But we did find a little gem evey now and then (ie: my grandfater's graduation certicicate from elementary school, dated 1909). There is much more to to go through.... Hope this note finds you all well and still researching.
Happy Hilidays,
Marianne Bollinger

In an effort to kick start our research in 2009, I would like to ask you all to post your bits and pices of information. Those little finds that don't fit your ancestor, but you decided to copy down and save. If the fact does not fit into your family, then it should be of help to someone else.

Also, I would like to remind everyone that I have Verna's Algeo's notebook. These are Verna's notes from the 60's and 70's. I will be glad to copy it and mail it to anyone who is interested. It costs $30 for copy fees and mailing. Please contact me for more information: mamagack@hotmail.com

I am currently entering Verna's final family information on ancestry.com, and giving her all the credit! It is attached to my "Algeo & Bollinger Tree". This is my tribute to her, and all the hard work that she did, and shared with us. Thanks again to her sons: Jim (who has passed), and Bob, for letting her work continue to help others.

Happy Hunting,
Marianne Bollinger
I've never found a link to the Irvine name. If the Irvine female was a Algeo, it happened in Ireland. John the father of two mentioned sons, was from Ireland, but there is about a 30 year gap between him and Charles.

He married four times and ended up in Sutter County, CA. Came west during the Gold Rush. Married in Steubenville, Ohio. Was a lawyer there. Does your book To the Waters Edge mention him?

Algeo's in Ohio, 1850

I recently reread "Ellenwood - Wharton & Twenty Families 1620-1968," compiled by Willard White Ellenwood, published in 1968, page 606. On 9 Oct 1852 Margaret (Irvine-Dinsmore) Wier (born 1811 in County Donegal, Ireland) formerly, Amsterdam, Carroll County, Ohio and just removed to Decaturville, Washington County, Ohio wrote to her brother Alexander Irvine, Carroll County, Mississippi: "We arrived here two weeks ago. "...We live one mile from Richard Irvine. He was here today and is doing very well, and has a nice family. There is a number of our friends (and relatives) living around here. Do you remember Richard Irvine of Hill Campbell. He has bought a farm and is to move his family first of April. Also the Mitchels and two sons of John Algeo & family..."

The 1850 Census for Washington County lists members of the Charles Algeo and Eliza Stewart Algeo family in Jolly Township; and in Decatur, James and Harriet N. Algeo family and the John and Mary Algeo family, descendants of John Gregory Algeo and Eliza McGill.

My sumation is Margaret Irvine's father, Richard Irvine of Errarooey, County Donegal, was first married to Miss Algeo, and Margaret and her brother Alexander were at least acquainted, if not related to John Gregory Algeo.

Any comments?
Sandy

ALGEO WILKINSON

There is an ALGEO, Thomas, in the WILKINSON Family Cemetery, Salt Creek Township, Tama County, Iowa, USA. His tombstone says: d. 22 Sep 1852 age 32y 5m 19d, Son of Charles and Eliza. He isn't related to the Wilkinsons as far as we know. However, every where I research my Wilkinsons, I find ALGEOs. My Wilkinsons came from Co. Donegal, Ireland in 1834. They passed through Pittsburgh PA and lived in Coshocton Co Ohio until 1849. Then theY settled in Salt Creek Township, Tama County, Iowa. Will everyone keep this lone ALGEO, Thomas, "Son of Charles and Eliza" in mind? Maybe someday we can find his family.
Sandy

ALGEOs of Bunlin, County Donegal, Ireland

In the book "More About Mevagh" by Dr. Leslie W. (Wilkinson) Lucas, p. 23 is: "When the news of Lord Leitrim's death became known some of the tenants who had been evicted returned to their farms and began to rebuild their houses. Within a week James Mitchell, James Duffy, Edward McGlinchie and Margaret Ferry had returned to Carrigart. Hugh McGlinchie of Carrigart also returned and so did the ALGEOs of Bunlin, but on September 17 {1878], Lord Leitrim's agent, Capt. Dopping, again evicted the latter. Francis Alcorn wrote in his diary, "Robert and John ALGOE assulted Capt. Dopping and Mr. Harrison. They were both of them arrested by the police."

(According to the information in this book, this Lord Leitrim was much hated by the renters on his land.)
