I remember that same horsethieves story but it was in Italy then they went to Scotland and the name was somthing else Italian like Algeo.

My father was David Bankhead Algie III, from Hudson NY, I believe my grandparents( Nellie and David II)were from Albany county before moving to Hudson. He was one of 6 children, Jean Lois, Carol, Sandra,David, Dotty and Gail.(I have never met another Algie)

Am helping an aquaintance with her tree. Is there anyone out there with connections to Algies of Glasgow. Her father James [Smith] ALGIE was born in Glasgow in 1914, parents believed to be James Algie and Jane JOHNSON. Jimmy was a welder who migrated to Australia in 1955 and worked in South Australia before settling in Melbourne.

Would be great to hear from others of the Algie family

Have found 4 of the family so far All born in Ireland..........

My father is Bernard and his only brother was Keith.
I know he sends/receives Christmas cards to/ from Australia and often talks about his family there so have gleaned snippets of information from him.

My gt gt grandfather was john algie, who came from scotland , he moved to ireland and worked there until he moved to NZ with his 2 cousins, they landed at a place called castle rock, i have many cousins and 2 brothers and 2 sisters, we have traced the ever winding tree back to paisleys scotland, but it seems to stop there, as for black sheep we all have a few of those, if any info required please email me on bigneil59@bigpond.com or inhattie@austarnet.com.au

My father Charles Bernard Algie ( aged 85) is the grandson of James Algie and Henrietta Watt as mentioned in your message.

Narelle - I don't have the names of George Edward Algie's (1872-1923) parents. I do have info. from his WWI Civ. Draft Reg, which lists his address in 1917 as 1082 Ogden Ave., Bronx, NY. He was born in the U.S. Also listed at that address were John Francis Algie, b. 11/09/1898 and William J. Algie, b. 06/16/1893.

Another Algie researcher referred me to The Genealogical and Family History of Northern New York by William Richard Cutter, 3 vols. (1910). I have not obtained the book, but checked the index lists online, which lists entries for the following names: Benjamin Algie, p. 769; George E. Algie, p. 770; Robert Algie, p. 769 and William C. I have a William Smith Algie b 1834 in Scotland went to N Y in 1855 married Margaret Bankhead in 1856. They had 3 children David B, Isabella B and James B.
Peter James Algie b 1828 Scotland went to N Y with his brother William Smith Algie in 1855 married Maria or Mary Reynolds about 1856 had 8 children Robert J, William H, David R, Charles S, Maria A, Peter J, George E, and Maggie J. Is this the same family yours?

I am 45 years old and I live in Seaford on Long Island. My dad (also James) was born in the Bronx or Manhattan in 1925. But I never knew much about his dad. I think his fathert's name was Peter or maybe James.

My grandfather was Samuel Algie born in 1901. Although born in England he always claimed to have been of Scotch heritage because both his parents were. Samuel had many siblings born throughout England, Scotland and Ireland as their parents kept moving. Their parents were James Algie born in Scotland and Henrietta Watt also born in Scotland (Glasgow). I have some info on this particular family if it is of any use.

Hello - found this Algie board quite by chance. Could any one help? My Gt.Grandfather was William ALGIE Browne - he lived and worked in Burma (Myanmar) late 1880s-early 1900s. Completely unable to trace any U.K.records. His daughter, my Grandmother was born in Rangoon 1888/1890. Again unable to trace records.She was Amy Dorothy ALGIE Browne - later Miller. Would having the name ALGIE mean a family connection to the Brownes? I suspect I'm guessing wildly here!

Any help or guidance would be more than welcome....

I agree, briefly mine are Margaret Algie born 1737 married Peter McAlpine 1760, her father John Algie Born 1714 and his father Thomas.

Am I the only Algie still alive. I along with some others have information on the Algie's if you are interested in knowing something about where you can from. Not from your mother's tummy either. It becomes hard to learn about the small details of the past once the source is no longer around. Get off your duff and let's find out who has the blackish sheep of the family.

Greg, I can let you know what I know. I do have a family tree of the Algie family which could help. I have been told that the Algie clan in Canada makes up the majority of the tree. Keep in touch and maybe we can trace our roots back to who knows where.

I have been researching my Algie family for awhile now (not very successfully) but in the course of doing so I have collected info on a lot of Algie 'strays' (not belong to me or at least I don't thinks do anyway). Many of them are from the areas you list. You are welcome to what I have on them if you would like them?

Your George Edward Algie (1872-1923) what was his parents names? I have just found out that my Algies went to N Y and I picked up on the 1880 census for the US that George E Algi not Algie was 7 years old and attending school, he was living with the rest of his family in Manhattan.
Are these any relation to your Algie's ?

Your great grandfather, James was my great grand-uncle. His younger sister, Margaret (Maggie) married Alexander LENNOX (Sandy) in Mount Morgan on 8th Dec 1890.
I guess that makes us cousins?!
Are you descended from one of Henrietta's children or from one of Isabella's children?

I am researching James William Orr b 1854 Nova Scotia.
Father: Robert Orr and Isabella from Scotland.

Perhaps these names have surfaced in your research?

James William Orr had a sister "Maggie" to whom my g grandmother would write somewhere in Pa. Tombstone and death cert. state nothing. Wedding cert gave names of James' parents and their origin.

James md. Louisa Dietrich Pa. My grandmother's parents.
