I came across your message and made me wonder about my great-great-great grandfather, Phillip Alheim. Ancestry.com had him listed as being born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany Abt. 1824 but from my 4th cousin in Ohio, Bonnie (Alheim) Koons I learned he was born in 1835 died in 4-28-1900 in Wyandotte Co, OH and was married on 3-30-1859 in Crawford Co, OH. Now not only does the name make me wonder if my Phillip changed his name in America from Johannis Phillip just to Phillip but here is another interesting fact. His wife, Barbara Yost was born in the same town in Germany in 1836 and died 9-7-1910 again in Wyandotte Co, OH. I will confer with my 4th cousin to get her opinion on this matter and we can both do a little more digging around on this and get back to you via email.

Who knows Ahlheim > Ahleim

Greetings,

I'm an Ahlheim (notice the second H) who does not have any close or living relatives. I'm wondering if anyone can shed light on that extra "H" and tell me if Ahleim and Ahlheim are synonymous.

Also I'd like to know more about the history of our lineage and interesting information about the founding of the Ahliem city in Germany.

It would be great to share with my kids but I know nothing of our heritage.

Hi,
Thank you very much for this information!! I have always thought that the Alheim's you are researching are the same family that I have been researching, however somewhere along the line I was told or found something that led me to believe that the George in Illinois and the George in NY were two different people. When I started the research I could have sworn and bet money that George was the same George in Illinois. But as I said, I think I was told by my husband's Great Uncle that he remembered George came straight to NY. With this information however I can look into it a little deeper and now I think I know why I could never find them in the the 1860 census in NY anyway. I need to look over my notes from 2001 and see what I had written down.
Sorry about the confusion with the families. When I read you had the information on George and Lucinda I was pretty happy. I had no idea who George's father is. How did you come across who his father was? I have been meaning to get his death certificate from NY, but I havne't gotten around to it, and I am hoping with all his kids at least one would remember who is dad was and it is on the death certificate.
So, let me get back to you with some information, I need to dig it out of my files and see where I possibly came up with that information.
Also, you can e-mail me directly at ladaea@msn.com if you want.
Give me a few days til I get the information.
Thanks again!
Dee

Hi Dee,
thanks for responding. Apologies but I am a little confused. The Alheim's you listed in your original post from 2001 (below)...you've discovered that this isn't your husband's line? Is that correct?

In any event, I'm curious where you found this information - Thomas and Elisabeth and all their children.

Thomas & Elisabeth Margareth Ahlheim
- did they come over or stay in
Germany?
Son - Friedrich (b. 1842) - married 3 times, first to Elisa Berth (or Elizabeth Bert - spelling is different on different documents), Bertha Reiss, then Maria Dietz.
Old Friedrich had many kids with his wives.
Son - Philipp (b. 1851) - have nothing on him, can't find anything.
Daughter - Elizabeth (b. 1839) married
to I believe William Darmstatter
Son - George (b. 1847) married Lucinda Cramer - settled in Albany, New York
Daughter - Johanette (b. 1836) married George Fries.

Hi,
I'm sorry I am getting back to you so late. As far as the Alheim's go, I am certain that the Alheim's in Illinois and Upstate New York are related somehow, I just havne't found the connection. According to my husband's Great Uncle, George and his family (I am still looking for his father's name) came to America and New York in 1860 from Darmstadt, Germany. It is still unclear whether they came into NY or Boston, but the majority say Boston. At any rate, my husband's family came to Albany, NY around 1860 and have lived in the state of New York ever since - although there have been a few members that have left the state (we live in Montana) back in the day and now. Like I said I am pretty sure there is a connection between the two Alheim "clans". I thought that the George from Illinois was the George I was looking for since he was also born in 1848 as was the George from New York, but I found out differently about a year after I started researching. So that's about it. I have quite a bit of information on the New York Alheim's should we find the connection between the two families. Let me know if you need anything. Thanks so much, and again, sorry it took me awhile to get back.
Thanks,
Dee Alheim

Hi,
Not sure if you'll see this reply since your post is several years old. But I have a very small amount of info on Johannette Alheim (b 1836, married George Fries. They had 4 children - Elisabeth, Ferdinand, Emma, and Clara. My wife descends from Ferdinand's line - thus my interest (and how I came across your post). From a 1910 census record, it looks like she was married to George in approx 1858 but did not emigrate to America until 1860. I found evidence of her obituary (1929) from a Freeburg, IL newspaper but I don't yet have a copy of it. Happy to share when I receive it if you are interested.

I was wondering perhaps if you had any more information on her husband George. I've run into a dead end with him pre-1860.
thanks!

New Athens, Illinois Alheim's (old spelling Ahlheim)

Hello! I need some information concerning the Alheim's (Ahlheim) that settled in New Athens, Illinois about 1860. There were quite a few in the family, one son settled in Albany, New York while the rest setteled in New Athens. Here is what I have:
New Athens:

All of them had children down the line, George and Lucinda had 14 kids, only about 10 lived.
So if anyone has any information at all, please let me know. I am particularly interested in Thomas and Elisabeth made the trip over. There is also a Ahlheim Cemetery in New Athens, Illinois. I don't know who is buried in it, no one has any documentation on it.
Thanks for everyone's help on this!
Deirdre Alheim
