He was born in Springfield, Mass., on July 18, 1917, the son of Emile and Rose (Maynard) Alix. They predeceased him.

He was married to Irene Rubel on Sept. 10, 1948, in Tonawanda, N.Y., by Rev. John Weismantel.

Mr. Alix is survived by his wife of 53 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Mark Dunham of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Nancy Alix of Chateaugay, N.Y., Richard and Kerstin Alix of Iceland, and James and Christine Affix of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Rita Tracy of Springfield, Mass.; two brothers, Francis Alix of Yonkers, N.Y., and Louis Alix of San Diego, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Alix graduated from High School of Commerce, Springfield, Mass. He entered into the U.S. Army on June 18, 1942, in the Army Air Corp. and served until Jan. 10, 1946, when he was honorably discharged as a sergeant.

He became manager of Woolworth’s Stores serving the northeastern United States for 25 years. Moving to Chateaugay in 1957, he began his own business, Alix’s Five and Dime on Main Street and continued to work up to the time of his death at Alix’s True Value.

He built his life around the store; he was very musical playing the violin, piano and organ without ever having taken a lesson. Fernand loved to garden and was a horticulturist. In his early years, he was a pro wrestler and was holder of the New England Championship.
