The family that I am researching began with Louis Allain, who was the first to come over to Canada in the mid 1700s. He had one son, Pierre. I knew that Pierre left during the expulsion (they had been living at Port Royal) and I just recently found out that he may have gone to Louisianna. Pierre's son Louis stayed in Maritime Canada and so did his desendants, who are my direct ancestors. I have been interested in what happened to Pierre and was wondering if anyone would be able to give me an idea.

Thank you very much for any help.

Sincerely

Heather Allen

Can anyone send it along pdf?
Can share photos of in place floor boards cut by Louis Allain 300+ years ago( carbon dated) for the construction of the deGannes house on St George Street Annapolis Royal (Port Royal) NS. Photos were taken by me at the 300th anniversary open house of Canada's oldest continuously privately inhabited home. What a thrill and rare experience to view boards cut by Louis Allain.
Thank You,
David J. Allain (ninth generation)

Re: Pierre Allain letter, Baton Rouge 1803

Pierre Allain, son of Lieut. Jean Francois and Marie Francoise (Ricard) Allain was born on September 11, 1762 in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Pierre’s father served gallantly under Bernardo de Galvez in the campaigns against the English during the Revolution. By 1803, Pierre was residing in Baton Rouge District, Spanish West Florida. Life was good under the old Spanish regime and many of its inhabitants enjoyed the laxity of protocol and liberal land grants. Mme Hortena Vahamonde, daughter of an earlier Spanish commandant – Capt. Jose Vasquez Vahamonde, came under the eye of Mons. Allain. A youthful girl of only fourteen, however, had fallen for the elderly Gov. Grand-Pre, commandant of Baton Rouge from 1800-1809. Pierre eventually wed Mme Marie Paulina Manette Duplessis on May 31, 1804 at the St. Louis Cathederal in New Orleans. They returned home to West Florida where Pierre and his bride had a sizable estate and plantation. Pierre resided in Baton Rouge until he died on February 8, 1820.

Transcription of letter

“Baton Rouge the 12th April, 1803

My Dear Armand, I have received your letter that you have made out of friendship to write to me with joy. You must have believed by my silence that I have not thought of you anymore. No, my friend! The circumstances where I found myself after the death of your poor comrade, Alexandre Patin; I was charged with all of the affairs of his succession and that made me neglect many things that I would have never neglected otherwise in other moments. I have shown your letter to your cousin who has been very sensitive to your memory and has cried from joy to learn of your news. She charges me to embrace you and my family tenderly. Your cousin Manette marries with Dubroca, the cousin of your mother-in-law. I don’t go into detail with you on the subject of your family, Planton. I write you this same occasion of your baby sister who is still pretty and plump. She speaks often of her brother Armand. Your father wouldn’t have rarely missed the opportunity to let you know that you have another sister who is also charming. Our friend, Dufref, who is hurrying me and taking care of this letter, leaves this moment from Baton Rouge to go down to New Orleans to embark for Bordeaux. However, he leaves me time to speak of Madamoiselle Hortena Vahamonde with whom I had promised to marry at the moment of the conclusion. You will find this bizarre that she prefers the Governor Grand-Pre with whom she would be married even if her father and mother had been opposed. You will find as strange that an old liar of 64 years without a fortune with 11 children is able to please a young girl of 14 years. I ask of you to embrace tenderly the little one and tell him that I hope that he will write me also. Goodbye my dear Armand. I wish good health and I hope to have this pleasure to see you soon and I am always your devoted cousin.”

Pre. Allain
Hi Fiona:
My father's family lived in Guernsey for many years.
My father Frank Cyril Allain (deceased) was also in the Royal Navy, Class 145 Royal Arthur. His father was Frank Denlow Cyril Allain, his mother was Lillian Allain. I have a photo of them taken in Guernsey dated 1946.
His sister's name was Ailie. They moved to Halifax. Yorkshire. England and Granfather owned a 'Gentlemans Club' (the true aristocratic kind, not the tacky places they are here in the USA) After grandfather passed, Lillian moved to Farnborough, south of London, then to Marlow, south of London. I know there was an Aunt Blanche in Guernsey, I visited her in the late 70's with my mother.
Maybe we are related in some way. I have looked on the Guernsey websites but not found anything.
Patricia

Hello Janet,

I must apologize for not having checked this board for quite a while. I was excited to see that someone replied to my original posting. My father Louis V. Allain died last Sunday and for over a year I've been trying to put together our Allain familt history. My paternal grandfather was Benjamin Louis Allain (born 1888) who had a sister named Suzanne Allain (born approx 1892) who was a witness to my dads baptism in Neguac. Their father was Vital Allain (born approx 1840) and mother was Marie Auger (born approx 1855), but I cannot find out who the parents of Vital were. I am using Family Tree Maker software to help with all of the data I've collected so far and it's working out nicely. I would be more than happy to share all of the info I've gathered with you and would appreciate any info you can help me with. I look forward to corresponding with you. I live in New Jersey although my family is from Sanford Maine. My email address is fretwork@warwick.net.

Best Regards, Don

Greetings,
Thank you for your kind offer of help with Louisiana Allains.
I am seeking information on Marianne Allain who married Pierre Jardoin in 1872 and had at least one daughter, Melodise Jardoin in 1873. Melody is my great grand mother.
I have been advised that my Marianne Allain is possibly the daughter of Guiomette Allain and Marianne Guillory. Who is Guiomette Allain? Also, is Marianne Guillory the daughter of Denis Guillory and Marianne Versiende Papillon?
Any information is appreciated.
Best Regards,
Anne Guillory Thom
I would be interested in this letter also.

Document Date: 5/6/1819
Notary: Conveyance Book E
Document Number: 297
Location: West Baton Rouge
Master: Pierre Allain
Master's Gender: 2
Name: Delphine
Gender: female
Race: mulatto
Age: 23
Freed: purchase by other
Slave was Liberto (To be freed at allowable age. Delphine was shown as being the child
of Pierre Allain (brother of Bernard's wife, Manette). Pierre stated
that Delphine was born to him and Mai, his slave, "without benefit
of marriage". This confirms Martin as being Bernard's son, probably
also by a slave, in the Mobile area, "without benefit of marriage".
=======================================================

THE DUBROCA FAMILY OF LOUISIANA

John Martin Dubroca (Bernard Maurice) was born in Mobile Co., AL
January 15, 1789. He married Delfina ALLAIN in Baton Rouge, LA, about 1813.
Delfina was born before 1800. The godmothers at the baptisms of Martin's and
Delphine's children included Catherine Dubroca, Magdelaine Dubroca, and Celemina
Dubroca; godfathers included Francois Allain and Valery Allain. At the time, it
was common for siblings to stand as godparents, suggesting that the Dubroca
girls may have been sisters of Martin's and the Allains may have been brothers
of Delphine's.
========================================================

Document Date: 6/8/1810
Document Number: 133
Notary: Conveyance Volume B
Depository: New Orleans Public Library
Location: West Baton Rouge
Language of this record: English
Seller: Nanette Duplessis
Buyer: Pierre Allain
Name: Marie Delphine
Name Type: Partilly coded, overwhelmingly European
Gender: female
Race: quadroon, quarteron
Age: 6
Birthplace: New Orleans Creole
sold or inventoried as an individual
Value of Sale: 450
Sale Common Price: 450
Where slave came from: East Baton Rouge
Comments: seller from East Baton Rogue
=========================================================

Document Date: 12/18/1815
Notary: LDS Film 0876590
Document Number: 40
Location: Pointe Coupee
Master: Francisco dit Allain
Master's Gender: 2
Master's Race: black
Name: Valery
Gender: male
Race: mulatto
Age: 30
Freed: by living master
The manumission did not involve cash payment.
Slave was freed.
no prices at all
Members of Group: Celine and valery
Comments: No indication of self-purchase or conditions found in document
==========================================================

Harrison Thomas LaTour
LaTour Genealogical Research Services
DIGITAL LIBRARY ON AMERICAN SLAVERY

Petition 20883515 Details
Location: West Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Salutation: To the Honorable the Court of Probates of the Parish of West Baton Rouge (, )
Filing Court and Date: Probate, 1835-May-23
Ending Court and Date: Probate, 1836-January-4

General Petition Information
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kinghar...

Abstract: François, Fergus, Celeste, and Theophile Allain petition for an account of the administration of the estate of their late father, Pierre Allain. They ask the court to decree to them their rightful portion of the estate. They inform the court that Pierre Allain died 8 February 1820, leaving a widow, Mannette Duplessis, and eight children as “his only and lawful heirs.” Pierre’s estate, which included a number of slaves, was inventoried and appraised at $56,051.50. The petitioners claim that, after a family meeting to adjudicate to their mother her portion of the community estate, it was decided that the remaining property of the succession should be sold at public sale with the proceeds equally divided among the children. The petitioners allege that only two of the heirs, Pauline Allain, now Mrs. Janin, and Celina Allain, now Mrs. Johnson, have so far been paid their portion of the estate. Two other of the children, Severine and Achille, have since died. The petitioners ask the court to direct Manette Duplessis and her new husband, Jacques Blanchard, to “render an account of the said administration” of Pierre Allain’s estate and to condemn them to pay “in solido” the sum of $5,000. They also ask for “what ever other and further sum may be proved to be due to each of them” from the amount inherited by their late siblings.
Result: partially granted

# of Petition Pages: 4

Related Documents: Inventory & Appraisal, Succession of Pierre Allain, ca. 22 April 1820; Account of Family Meeting, 22 April 1820; Account of Public Sale, 3 June 1820; Statement of Debts, ca. 4 January 1836; Partition of the Estate of Pierre Allain, ca. 4 January 1836; Judgment, 4 January 1836
Pages of Related Documents: 25

People Associated with Petition 20883515
Slaves: 39
Free Persons of Color: 3
Defendants: 2
Petitioners: 4
Other People: 7

Citation Information
Repository: West Baton Rouge Parish Courthouse, Port Allen, Louisiana

found in Records of the Fourth Judicial District Court
Record Group:
Document Number 81
Box:
Folder:
Book:
Volume:
Page:
Microfilm:

Processing Information
Transcribed?: No
Book Edition?: No
Record Created: 12/3/1996
Record Final Edited: 1/16/2004
Record Last Updated on: 5/15/2006 2:29:00 PM

**********************************************************

DIGITAL LIBRARY ON AMERICAN SLAVERY

Community Estate of ALLAIN, Pierre in Petition 20883515
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kinghar...

Jean in Petition 20883515
Name: Jean
Petition: 20883515 filed in Louisiana, 1835
Role in Petition:
Ethnicity and Gender: black male
Enslavement Status: slave
Age:
Birth:
Death:
Owned slaves?
Occupation:
Skills:
Diseases:
Physical Attributes:
Moral Attributes:
Plantations:
Literate?
Urban?
Runaway?
Punishments Received:
Term slave?
Freedom:

***********************************************************

1850 United States Federal Census

Name: Jean Allain
Age: 56
Estimated birth year: abt 1794
Birth Place: Louisiana
Race: Mulatto
Gender: Female
Home in 1850
(City,County,State): St Landry, Louisiana

***********************************************************

DIGITAL LIBRARY ON AMERICAN SLAVERY

PAR Number 20883903
Location: St. Landry Parish, Louisiana; Year: 1839

Abstract: Joseph Guillory, a free man of color, represents that he is the “owner and actual possessor” of a tract of land in the parish of St. Landry. He charges that Jean Allain Jr., also a free man of color, has frequently trespassed on his land, "cut and destroyed large quantities of timber," and made eight hundred rails from the timber. Guillory alleges that it is Allain’s intention to remove the rails and convert them to his “private use.” He therefore seeks an injunction to prevent Allain from removing the rails and further trespassing on the land.
I have a Louis Allian, b 1722 and was wondering if the Louis you have is one of his ancestors. The Louis I have was maried to one of my cousins, so his ancestor wouldn't be related, but his descendants. If you have my Louis in your tree I would be interested in any info on his descendants as they would all be cousins. I would also be willing to share any info I have that you would be interested in.

Young 14 year old Capt Jean Francois came to Louisina as a cabin boy in 1719. He travelled on Le Phillipe. I have heard some tales. Love to talk.
allaintt@aol.com

Pierre Allain letter, Baton Rouge 1803

I have a letter in french date April 12, 1803 at Baton Rouge, La. from Pierre Allain writing to an Armand about various family incidents. One note is of his brother in law, Alexandre Patin who had recently died. Another is the marriage of his sister Manette Allain to Mon. Dubroca. Also speaks of Mme. Hortena? Vahamonde and going to New Orleans for Bordeaux wine. If anyone is interested and can maybe translate the text please send me an email and I can forward you a clear scan of the letter.
Thanks.

Hi Here it is 3 years later, I just read your message. I am doing research on the same family. I have Joseph Francois Alain's father as Gilles Alain. My aunt went into microfilm at the library. I am related through Isabelle also. My G grandfather was Honore Desire Alain (born 1865) from Gaspe. There are many of his descendants in the Detroit area. I hope this is helpful! Leslie Allain-Emond

A little late for reply. You probably already found out that Louis Allain b1722 is the son of Pierre Allain b1691-1744 and pierre is the son of Louis Allain b1654-1737. Kim
