After my reply earlier today I went back and looked for the remaining census records. The string runs as follows:
Federal Census: East St Louis 13y 1 June 1880 in St Clair Co IL
Federal Census: Smithville 33y/25y [5 children / 5 living; painter] with Frances Ellen HEDRICK, 18 June 1900 in Clay Co MO
Federal Census: Arlington 48y/33y [11 children / 10 living; house painter] with Frances Ellen HEDRICK, 10 May 1910 in Phelps Co MO
Federal Census: Arlington 52y/45y [painter / contrctor] with Frances Ellen HEDRICK, 7 January 1920 in Phelps Co MO
Federal Census: Newburg 64y/56y [house painter] with Frances Ellen HEDRICK, 8 April 1930 in Phelps Co MO
James and Frances are both buried at Goodall Cemetery in Phelps Co. There is some minor conflict over their birthdates. The 1900 census gives James' as Nov 1866, his death certificate as 24 Jan 1866 and his tombstone (and funeral home record) as 24 Feb 1866. In Frances' case the 1900 census gives Mar 1875, the death certificate 2 March 1873 and her tomebstone as 3 March 1874.
As for James parents. I have seen his mother identified as a HOFFMAN and a SMITH. James death certificate does no name her but indicates she was from PA as do most census records. But in the 1880 census it says she is from NY. I have not looked for the 1870 census to see what it might reveal not have I looked at the IL marriage records. As for James' father Thomas he is always said to be from Ireland but I have not looked any farther.
