I've also learned that these portraits are basically huge lockets usually given as a keepsake from one lover/spouse to another and that the hair belongs to the sitter, in this case Joseph Allender himself. If it wasn't encased behind glass, it potentially could be used in the DNA project, but it would ruin the piece I suspect.
