There is a marriage to Largent in your line and in the line of Allenders from Virginia (some of whom lived on Moveables plantation -hence the name) --I have not had any success on the Largent connection, but have not worked on it lately either. I took off the pics --they were not meant to be there. If you know anything on the Largent family or those two marriages it might help to make a connection. alice

Hi, tracing part of my husband's lineage via Valentine Allender who married Sarah Hughes (we think). Through this line of research, Valentine's parents were(1850 census) Jacob Allender and Polly ? they had Henry, Polly, Valentine (3/1836), Francis and Marian (translates to Maryanne in the 1860 PA Census and Polly becomes Maria). 1860 Census Valentine is married to Sarah Hughes (NJ) had one child Anna born 1858 or 1859. I believe died young. They are living in the father's house in Salisbury, Lehigh County, PA with son Jacob age 9 until some time in the 1870's as they live in the 1880's in Philadelphia, PA with Sarah's brother William Hughes/Hughs. Through the various Census' Millers can be found too. Allentown, PA is another location. Any of this info familiar or a connection?

Last night, out of curiosity, I used a magnifying glass to try to read the signature of the portrait. Since Joseph's father-in-law, Joseph Biays, and aunt-in-law (?), Sarah Jackson, both had their portraits done by Rembrandt Peale which are in the Smithsonian, I wondered if Peale may have done this as well. I could only make out "H. Elo???". So I located a collector of miniature portraits on the web from New Zealand and sent him photos of it and asked if he might know the artist. He responded within hours. The artist was Jean Pierre Henri Elouis (1755-1840), from France who emigrated to America for some years around 1790 and where he called himself Henry Elouis. He returned to France in 1807 where he remained for the rest of his life.

You are most welcome. Umm, did someone ring the Allender wake-up bell? :-) I've been exchanging emails with Christy for a few weeks now and have really appreciated getting to know her. I believe we can probably figure out the Md to Ohio connections. I just received a letter from my Iowa Uncle Biays (named after Joseph Allender's wife's family (Mary Biays) - he's really our genealogist and he said he would dig through his files and see what he could come up with. He's a regular treasure trove of information. I'll post what I find on your forum to share with all.

Take care and feel free to contact me whenever.

David
dlbowerman@yahoo.com

Hi Kristina,

I've also learned that these portraits are basically huge lockets usually given as a keepsake from one lover/spouse to another and that the hair belongs to the sitter, in this case Joseph Allender himself. If it wasn't encased behind glass, it potentially could be used in the DNA project, but it would ruin the piece I suspect.

David

I am trying to find out more about A(u)gusta Allender who on the 1880 census was living with a Kitchel(l) family in Union Co. IN at age 7. I found what I believe is her
death certificate on the Family Search site. It states that her father was J.M. Allender and mother was Sarah Brandt. Could they be sisters?

I believe she was living in Dayton, OH on the 1910 census and then married
Hugh Walsh. They are buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.

I believe that she is my grandfather's birth mother but have no real proof.
I do have a picture of his birth mother. Do you have one of Edna Ruth Allender?
They married 4/7/1824 in Baltimore.

I know that William was a "private second battalion, Maryland Line" in the Revolutionary war.

Do you think this is the same William who was married to Barbara?

Their daughter Ellen and Susan and William are buried in Embarrass, WI at the "Riverside Cemetery" This sounds very much like the people you are looking for. I would like more info on the William Allender line if you have any to share. Thank you

Hi Christy, If is so good to hear that someone else is on the same path as you are on. I am new to Ansc.com so I hope I don't presume too much. I would love to compare notes with you. As I have said Susan Evangeline were sisters who both married my great grandfather James Jason Olmstead. It sounds like George was their brother as I know the girls' parents were William Allender and Sarah Lashley. My records are very sketchy on the Allenders. I do have a list showing the marriage date of William and Sarah: 15 Oct. 1829, in Belmont County,Ohio.
I have a Birth Date of 1812 for William which does not agree with yours. I have a birth date for Sarah of 1816. On the 1900 census their birth place is recorded as Ohio Line number 56 under township of Matteson. This is on the line under Susan Olmstead wife of James J. Olmtead. I also have a list showing the William Allender off-spring. On that list George Allender is number nine 9 born 1845 in Wisconsin. He comes right before Ellen and then comes my great grandmother Susan Evangeline born 30 Aug.1852. So yes we are working on the same family. I live in Southern Calif. so I have been at a disadvantage at to access. We have gone to Waupaca county courthouse and to the cemetery in Emparrass. There are a lot of Allender graves there and Olmstead graves as well. I may have pictures of some of the Allender gravestones..not sure. I have lots of family pictures some of which I cannot identify. I would love to share any info I have. Thank you for responding so quickly. Judy

JOHN ALLENDER, b. 1769 Ireland - What County?

Just beginning my Allender research. Appreciate all the resources on this line. Question 1: Has anyone yet discovered which County in Ireland John Allender, b. 1769, came from? He immigrated in April 1796 with first wife, who had child onboard ship, son William Alexander Allender. Question 2: Does anyone know what port they came into? I'm not finding any immigration information. Many thanks, Mary

Thanks - I'm emailing it to my grandmother (Edna's great-grand-daughter).

As for your question about whether Edna was on later census records, she would have been 14 in 1890 (not available), and by the next census in 1900, she was 24 and living with her husband Frank Clinton Witt (m. 1892, listed as Edna Zallinder) and their daughter Hazel Ruth Witt (my grandmother's mother). On the 1900 census, she is listed as Edna Z. (possibly for "Zallinder" Witt). She is also listed on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records, along with husband Frank C. Witt. My grandma has photos that note "at Gma Lafuze's house" and the like, and there is reference to Gma Lafuze as being a "foster grandmother," so I believe that Edna remained with the Lafuze family until she married Frank Witt. She died June 23, 1948, in Union County, Indiana. Frank died in 1942.

Interesting ... I have my grandma's pictures temporarily. I am sure that there must be a couple of Edna Ruth Allender. (I am still trying to decipher some of them because they have two sets of notes on many of them.) Edna Ruth Allender appears to have been raised by the Lafuze [Lafuse/La Fuse] family in Liberty, Indiana. Interestingly enough, it appears that the Kitchell's lived near a Lafuse family as well. My theory is that maybe Edna's mother died - I found a John Allender in the 1880 census working as a laborer and listed as "widower." I'll try to get a picture of Edna Ruth Allender scanned and uploaded next week.

Although it is my understanding that Donna may have passed on, I am interested in finding out the answer to this same question. Based on information that I can find, Edna Ruth Allender (Aleder Allinder Alender) appears to have been the daughter of John M. Allender but appears to have been raised by the Lafuze family in Liberty, Union, Indiana, until she married Frank C. Witt. It appears that she lived with the Lafuze family since at least age 4, according to the 1880 census. I would be interested in finding out who who mother was and the particulars of how she came to live with the Lafuze family, as well as what became of John Allender.

So pleased to have an England Allender to place a message on this post. I have a great amount of difficulty of getting further back than my own Grandfather JOHN WILLIAM ALLENDER. I think John William's father was THOMAS ALLENDER and Thomas's father was JAMES ALLENDER. James was born 1783 in Maryland. James owned a sawmill in Hampshire Co., West Virginia. He was married to Sarah Alderton. Their children were George Washington, Thomas, Sara Elizabeth, Jacob and the Rev. James Allender I have a few dates, too.
