Hello Steve

Thank you for your posting. I believe base on your information we have a common ancestor in Thomas Allensby our 4th Gt Grandfather from Ely Cambs, making us 5th cousins. My grandmother was an Allensby her father came from Ely.

The Allensby name is not common, and I agree with your mother from a family history point of view it seems to me that all those who descend from this line are related.

Its nice to find another cousin.

Best Wishes

Richard

Hi,

Though my family name is Bates, my mother's maiden name is Allensby. My great grandfather was born in Cambridge, as were 2 of my great aunts. My grandfather and great uncle were born in Lewisham, London where this part of the family moved before World War 1, although from the census records of 1911 (attached), it would seem they were moving back and forth between London and Cambridge.

Best,

Steve

You are definitely related to me and our family as all my relatives came from Ely to Cambridge at the beginning of the 1900's.

A Robert lived at Prickwillow which is just outside Ely I seem to remember in the late 1800's. He was my G G Grandads brother. Most of them were watermen on the Cam river and ended up in the workhouse at the end of the 1800's.

I have a complete tree for most of the Ely Allensbys if you want it you can contact me direct by clicking on my original message and accessing my email address.
Regards
Guy

Hello again Richard, your information is correct,I have several certifcates confirming details, 1871 census for John Star b 1844 clearly shows Frances Allensby, mother in law.John Starr and martha kelly were my grandparents.i will also keep searching for Frances and Edmunds marriage. The IGI system on the LDS website is very good. My email address is p.birch1@sky.com Isabella Powley was christened on 26/10/1845 in Narborough two months after she was born. So we must be distant cousins. James ( JIM )

Hello James

I am unable to find the marriage of edmund and frances however by way of speculation I believe that the marriage is recorded in Dec QRT 1845 GRO index as
Aylesbury Edmund Swaffham 13 735
POWLEY Frances Swaffham 13 735

This may seem a bit of a stretch to misspell Allensby but it is possible that the name was misheard by the registrar and he wrote down what he thought. You can see the ‘original’ GRO page from Free BDM but it’s a typed page which means it was probably copied from a written entry. I have come across other misspellings or variations especially transcripts from census documents.

In the 1901 census search pages the following are probably related but I have not down loaded the census page to see the entire households

Edward Starr 22 Lancs Bootle Lancashire Bootle Cum Linacre Slaters Labourer
John Starr 28 Herts Hitcher Lancashire Bootle Cum Linacre News Agent
Frances Allensby 78 Norfolk Norfolk Lancashire Bootle Cum Linacre

Ralph Star 25 Lancs Bootle Lancaster Litherland Dock Labourer
Isabella Star 15 Lancs Bootle Lancaster Litherland Juvenile
John Star 57 Cambridgeshire Ely Lancaster Litherland Skinner
Charlotte M Star 56 Gloucestersh Minching Hampton Lancaster Litherland

Your ancestor John Star I have as born in Hitchin Herts as per the 1881 census which you can look up on the LDS site and from the GRO index Births Mar 1874 Starr John - Hitchin 3a 342.

I have him married to a Martha Kelly in 1901

Regards

Richard

Hello James

I have Isabella Allensby on my family tree, as a descendant of Edward Allensby my 5th Gt Grand Father.

Her name is Isabella Powley Allensby on the marriage entry in the GRO
Marriages Sep 1864
Allensby Isabella Powley Ely 3b 911
Star John William Ely 3b 911

I have assumed that the POWLEY bit of her name was her mothers family name.

I have not yet found a birth registered in Allensby Isabella Powley name , but there are female Powley registered in Swaffham around that time without a forename.
The Swaffham registration district includes Narborough

From the 1851 census Ely Holy Trinity HO107/1764 405B she was 5 years old and from the 1881 census RG11 / 3693 61 she was 38 years old so an estimate of her birth year 1844 – 1846. I nave her death as 1898

I have not yet found a marriage of Edmund Allensby her father and her mother Frances,

From 1851 census Frances was 24.
On the 1881 Census entry (RG11 / 3693 61) there is a Frances MINSBEY W Female 60 Narborough, Norfolk, England Tailoress mother in law to John Star living in the house. This has to be the same family, but the name of Frances nothing like Allensby

She could have remarried as Edmund had died in 1871

She died age 78 in 1904 as Frances Allensby which gives her birth year at about 1826.

Please let me know if you need any further informationon the Allensby line

Regards

Richard
