John Lester Allis

On the off chance that one of you may check this thread someday, I'm posting an obituary from my great grandmother's scrapbook.

Tuesday September 24, 1907, probably from the Hampshire Gazette

Florence

Lester Allis Killed

John Lester Allis, son of Austin J. Allis, was killed at Bridgeport, Ct last night. Word was received at the center last night and his brothers left at midnight to return with the body. At this writing there are but a few facts in regard to his death. He was the engineer on a freight train and was caught in a wreck. He was pinned so that he could not escape and live steam inhaled into his lungs caused his death. There is probably not a young man in this city better known than the deceased. He enlisted in the Spanish war with Co. I and his work in the field and in the hospital are well known to the boys of that company and to our people at large. On account of his devotion to his comrades he was selected to return to Cuba for the bodies of the Company I boys who died on the island. On his return and enlisted in the 26th regiment and spent three years in the Phillipines. At the expiration of his time he returned home and secured a position as fireman on the Northampon division of the NY, NH & H RR. Later he was transferred to the New York and Springfield division and for over a year was the fireman on the fast express trains between those two cities. About six months ago he took the examination for an engineer's position and was one of the few who were successful. He was given an engine immediately and for a time was mostly on special work. Lately he has run a fast freight between New Haven and New York. Allis was a kindhearted boy devoted to his home. Everyone who knew him was devoted to "Let". He had a bright future ahead of him as he was bound to rise rapidly among the engineers of his road. His death is a terrible blow to his family and to his widow. The recent death of his mother and his sudden death comes with terrible force on those who are left. He had been married but five weeks and was living in New York City. He leaves a widow, a father, a sister, Josephine, and five brothers, Charles of Springfield, William and George of the center, Luther at home and Robert of Brookfield.

From another article:

John Allis, an engineer on the NY NH and H RR met with a terrible death yesterday at the East end freight yards when he was scalded alive. The accident occurred at 7 in the morning and his death was at 2:30 o'clock. Deceased was a resident of New York City, where he lived with his wife at East 116th Street...

From another article:

The funeral of John Lester Allis was held from his home Thursday afternoon. Rev S. Allen Barrett officiated and the house services were private. The service at the cemetery was public and a large number of friends were present. The Spanish War veterans and a detachment from Company I attended and a volley was fired over the grave. The bearers were C.S. Riley, F.V. Mahoney, J.E. Jackson, William Written, Perry Brown and M. Paterson, all members of the Spanish War Company. Burial was in Park Street Cemetery in Florence.

I'm not sure why my great grandmother had so many clippings of John Allis' death. It may have been because her husband was the station agent for the NY NH & H RR, or it may have been because her brother was the manager of the phone company in the Phillipines during the Spanish War. Or it may have been because she knew the Allis family, having been a life long resident of Williamsburg, Florence and North Farms.

That link is very interesting.

My Allis ancestors have lived in Amsterdam since at least 1840 - I can't trace my Allis ancestors back further than that. My other Dutch ancestors are from Gelderland. Some of my them have been passing down their surnames (instead of first names) since at least the 1670s (which is when the British first tried to encourage this in the Netherlands). The rest of my Dutch ancestors started doing this in the 1760s.

The information on the link about how the Dutch named their children is very useful to me. Now I can better guess the names of the some of the grandparents/parents of my known ancestors.

I found another definition of the surname "Alles" & it is a Dutch surname (as well as an English surname). I can only trace my ALLIS ancestors back to 1823 & their surname spelling never changed. It would be very useful to my research if I knew how to read Dutch!

I think it depends on how the name is said. For my Allis family before 1790 it appears that they were spelling the name Allis, Alice, and Allice, though I do have to look up the original records. Probably Alis and Alliss are also in use. One of the Allis family married a Clipson, whose parents are Clipsham (I did find that in the parish records).

When people couldn't write it came down to the person taking the details to spell the name how it sounded. Another surname in my tree is Abdey. This has also been written as Abdy and Abday. As late as the early 1900s Abdy and Abdey seemed to be used interchangeably.

This link is quite interesting
http://www.angelfire.com/id/vancuren/patro.html
with a bit on spelling changes.

It's a tricky area, so good luck!

What area of Holland were your family from?
Just looked up the origin of 'Alles' - it is an English surname from the Old French word for 'Isle'. So it is not Dutch either... I wonder if historically there have been many spelling overlaps/mistakes between people called 'Alles' and people called 'Allis'?

Thanks David.

It is interesting that 'Allis' people go back to the 1600s in Holland. Also I'll have to look up more info about the 'Alles' surname... it looks very similar to 'Allis'.

From what I've read online the origin of 'Allis' is the French Norman female personal name 'Alis' (which became 'Alice'). There are not that many English surnames around that come from female first names so I was happy to read that about my surname! The 'Ellis' surname has a different origin, the male first name 'Elias' in the bible (the Greek spelling of 'Elijah'). But who knows whether my Allis ancestors were originally 'Ellis' ancestors... the words sound the same.

Hi,
Yes, I have Allis ancestors going back to 1790 in Lincolnshire. That's as early as I have traced so far, however the name goes back to much earlier times so I have a lot more work to do. In fact I think my family may have changed to Allis from Alice. It sounds the same!

I looked at the family search site for the Netherlands and there are a couple of Allis people from early times
e.g.
95. Griettie Thoomas Allis - International Genealogical Index / CE
Gender: Female Birth: 07 SEP 1659 Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands

Also there were many ALLES. I don't know how that compares to ALLIS to Dutch ears.

I'm not really sure if that's a help!
David

Earliest ALLIS ancestors in England? (pre-1830)

Do you have ALLIS ancestors from England who were born 1830s or earlier? Who are your earliest "Allis" ancestors?

ALLIS is an English surname (middle ages: Norman French: from female first name 'Alis' or 'Alice'). All of my known Allis ancestors came from the Netherlands but they must have emigrated from England at some point, I just don't know when.

My earliest ALLIS ancestor that I know of is ANDRE LOUIS ALLIS (b. around 1820, I don't know where) who lived in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Andre Louis sounds like a Dutch (not English) name to me.

My surname is ALLIS & it is an uncommon name so hopefully that will make it easier for me to trace my surname's roots. In the 1841 UK census there were 116 ALLIS people living in England - mostly in Lincolnshire (South-East England) & in the Yorkshire areas (East England).

Thanks for any help!

I've found more information on my ALLIS ancestors from Amsterdam: I'll start from oldest to most recent ancestors:

Andre Louis ALLIS married Johanna Elisabeth BRANDOUW.
Had children: Maria Philippina Allis (born 1875 in Amsterdam, married Willem van Hall, and died 1942 in Baarn).
Johanna Ferdinanda Allis (born 1876, Burgerlijke Stand, Amsterdam)
Jan Fedde Allis (1878 Amsterdam)
Louis Andrë Allis (1880 Amsterdam)
JOHANNES JACOBUS ALLIS (1853-1896, born in Amsterdam, died in Nijmegen, Gelderland)

JOHANNES JACOBUS ALLIS married Willemina Antonia HENDRIKS
Their children: Antonia Wilhemina, Antoon (1891-93), Andre Louis (born 1888), Johannes Jacobus (born 1882), JOHANNES ALBERTUS (born 1886 in Hees Nijmegen, Gelderland).

JOHANNES ALBERTUS married Johanna Catharina BOUMAN (born 1/09/1889 - her father was Theodorus Bouman). Their children were Johannes (1912), Femmetje (1914), Wilhelmina (1916) (all three died as infants/toddlers). They also had children Johanna ('Anne', born 1921), Johannes ('Jan' born 1923) and Theo (born 1925 - my grandfather).

Allis (and Bouman) - Amsterdam, Netherlands.

I'm searching for info about Allis' who lived in Holland, particularly in Amsterdam in the 1800s. Allis is an English name, and there are not many Allis' linked with Holland so I would think it shouldn't be too hard to find my Allis ancestors.

My great-grandfather Johannes married Johanna Cathrina Bouman, so any 'Bouman' info that may be connected (especially information about where Cathrina grew up/was born) would be great - she was from a farming family, I don't know where they lived, and once married she moved to Amsterdam and lived their with husband and children.

My Dutch grandfather is Theodorus Allis, he grew up in Holland. His siblings are Johanna (known as Ann) Cathrina Goodwin, Johannes (known as Jan)Albertus Allis, and two sisters who died in infancy. His father and fathers' father share the same name, Johannes Albertus Allis.

His mother is Johanna Cathrina Bouman (siblings: Henk, Jan, Fem). Her father was Theodorus Bouman. They were farmers (therefore assumedly living somewhere outside of Amsterdam).

That is all I know. I don't know birthdates, but my grandfather is about 80, so I would guess his parents were born around 1870-90s, and their parents born around 1830-60s.

I am responding to Ray Allis his responds on the Ancestors of Corydon E. Thayer. thank you for the information on his family where the connection comes in the Allis family. I am trying to connect to the Colonial of Dames and was wondering you may have to show that Eliza was the daughter of Eleazer and Esther(Rutty) and that Silas is also the son of Eleazer but his mother is Mary Ingram. Information on the family would be greatly appreciated. Also I have tried to get to your web site and have not been able to. My e-mail is texasjack2gorge.net How can I also get pictures.etc. Thank you Bette

Allis, Thayer

sorry about putting the other names that I was searching, but working on the Allis line. Eliza Allis married a Lewis Thayer, and they had three children, Viletta, Corydon and Ocar. Viletta died at the age of 2 years and six months, which would be 18-september -1841, so put her born in 1838, then there was Corydon who was born 26-January-1843 and he later married a Hester R. Allis who father was Silas Allis and half brother to Eliza Allis. then the third child was Oscar who was born in 1844. Sorry about the confusing on my part. Any information on Eliza Allis would be helpful, especially when I am trying to locate her husband Lewis his family. The 1840 census of Wyoming County, Pennsylvania says he was born about 1812 in Pennsylvania.
Thank you.

Eliphalet Allis lived in Montague MA. Children listed in historical records include: Samuel, Jonathan, David and Mary all who died in 1759. In Horatio Allis' genealogy the children are listed as Samuel, Samuel, Mary, David, Jonathan, Freedom and Marah. However, Lemuel Shattuck lists Lydia Allis (wife of William Shattuck) as the only child of Eliphalet Allis. Who is Lydia's father?

Hi, Ray ... I have a carte-de-visite photo of "Alonzo Allis", and my only wish is to get it back in the hands of family members. The photo is a carte-de-visite, 2-1/2" x 4", of a young man about age 20-25, taken in about 1880+or- a year or two. There is no location given, unfortunately. I did a little research for Alonzo Allis, and found in 1880 census, there was an Alonzo in LaPorte (LaPorte Co.) IN, so I assume this may have been the same man.

The reason I feel it may be the same man is that I bought it with a group of other similar same size/type photos at the same shop, some of which stated things like "class of '81 - (or) I.P.U. - (or) class of '82" and I can only imagine that the "I.P.U" is for a college of some type in either Indiana or Illinois. Of course, it is always possible, if Alonzo had a specialized type of college training, he might have moved to Ohio, making him somehow connected with the Alonzo you specify.

Hope this helps a bit. If anyone feels this Alonzo might be in your family, email me at margerice@prodigy.net and I can scan the photo.

Allis or Ellis, he was born in Washenborough, Lincolnshire Co. England 9/15/1822. His father was George allis born abt. 1793 Mablethorpe. John's Mother was Ann Taylor born abt. 1797 in Trusthorpe, Lincolnshire Co. They were married June 29, 1818 in Trusthorpe. That is all I have on them. John is living in Springfield, Mass. according to the 1850 Federal Census. If you think there could be a connection here please let me know.

John C. Allis, Lincolnshire or Springfield

John C. Allis died in Springfield, Massachusetts on February 14, 1878. He left a wife of 28 years, Mary "Egan" Allis born Ireland abt. 1832. They had six children, George W. born Holyoke, Mass. 1851, John Jr. born Spfld, Mass 1854, Charles A. Spfld 1857, Annie J. Spfld 1860, Mary Elizabeth Spfld 1864, Benjamin Spfld 1867. Another John Allis born England 1847 lived with the family for a few years. I don't know what his relationship was to the family. John C. Allis' death certificate states he was a carpenter. He was born in England and was 56yrs. 4months 30 days when he died. His parents are stated as George Allis and Ann both of England. My Grandmother's family date book has a notation which reads - John C. Allis born September 15, 1822 Washingborough, England. The Church of Latter Day Saints has this information: John Allis, christened August 12, 1821 Washingborough, Lincoln England. Parents: George Allis born abt. 1793 Mablethorpe, Lincoln England and Ann Taylor born abt. 1797 Trusthorpe, Lincoln England. They were married June 29, 1818 in Trusthorpe. I'd like to hear from anyone with even a shred of information relating to this Lincolnshire or Springfield Allis line.

I am researching the Taylor family in Trusthorpe at the turn of the 18th century. I have three brothers, William, Lot and Thomas whose father was Lot Taylor born abt 1773 and mother Ann Harpham born about 1762. The parents married on 8th May 1793. William the elder of the brothers was born abt 1796 and Lot about 1797. I am wondering whether your Ann Taylor was their sister.
I note your post is dated 5 feb 2003 but would be interested to hear whether you have learnt anymore from other sources over the intervening years!!

I was looking through the past postings and found yours about Robert Osmond Vought.

If you have not already solved your mystery I think my ggrandmother was a sister to your Robert Osmond. I will need more info to be sure. Do you have any dates or locations? Are they from PA? Where?
