ALMON, FREEMAN, WILKINS, NH or ME (New England)

Hello. Several researchers and I have been trying to solve a family mystery for a long time. It is also a "brick wall" in regard to who Samuel WILKINS' parents were.

But the reason I'm posting a query here is that we have always wondered about the names of Samuel's children. First, I can mention that all we know about his wife is that she was Electra "Leeta" ______. I was just told this week that they had 10 children "somewhere" but we only know about 4 out of the 5 surviving children. They seem to have all been born 1800-1820:

Samuel WILKINS, Jr., Almon WILKINS, (daughter), Mary Ann/Jane WILKINS, and George Freeman WILKINS.

No one knows who Samuel's parents were. My educated guess is that they were William WILKINS and Sarah BANCROFT. They had moved from MA to "Maine" ~1780 and that is when Samuel was born. But I have a guess that Sarah died as a result of childbirth.

So, we are wondering if Electra "Leeta" (unknown) was related to a FREEMAN or ALMON family. Or, whether a FREEMAN or ALMON family raised Samuel.

This would have been either in NH or "Maine." The family shows up in "Maine" in 1810 and remains in Maine. No one knows where the family was before that, but the couple probably married ~1800 "somewhere."

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hi, I am trying to find where Thomas Almond was born in Virginia in 1777 and connect him to a family. I found him 1802 when he married Elizabeth Wood in Lunenburg, VA. Also in 1809 he sells land in Charlotte Co, VA. I next find him in Rutherford Co, TN in 1820. He had at least one son named James Almon who is the father of my grandfather Robert. In 1830 census his name is spelled Allman.

She originally married Elmer Lorenzo Dahl/Dow Hood, and after his death she remarried to a Lamb. I still do not know her parents names.

Green V. Almand (1809-1880) of Georgia

I am trying to sort out all the east Georgia Almands (a wide variety of spellings exist, of course) and establish the ancestry of my 3rd great grandfather, Green V. Almand. He was born ca. 1809 in Georgia and was enumerated in DeKalb Co., Ga. by 1830, where he died in 1880.

He was a longtime business associate, neighbor, and in-law of Jeremiah Wells, whose son Andrew Jackson Wells was born in 1828 in Morgan Co., Ga. and later married Green's daughter, Amanda Evaline Almand. When Green's first wife, Mary Rapshire, died, Green married Jeremiah's daughter (and A.J.Wells' sister), Martha Elizabeth Wells. This seems a viable lead simply because there were a number of Almands in Morgan County from 1830 on, including James Morgan Almond, Sr., whose several children would have been contemporaries of Green.

Because the Wells and Green Almand were brick masons and manufacturers (by the 1850 census Green is enumerated as a stone mason), maybe they got their start together in Elbert Co., Georgia, known as the "Granite Capital of the World". We believe Jeremiah Wells was born in Elbert Co. in 1801, and we know that he lived at various times in Elbert, Franklin, Walton, and Morgan Cos. before settling in DeKalb, where he died in 1883.

There was also a bricklayer named Asmon R. Almand in DeKalb County by 1840. He would be about the right age to be a sibling of Green V. Almand (about two years younger), works in the same trade, and, perhaps coincidentally, Jeremiah Wells named a son born in 1840 Asmond.

I would be surprised if Green V. Almand is not connected to the various Almands of Elbert, Morgan, and Newton Cos., Ga. We know from census data that he was born in Georgia, but where and to whom?

Any help tying in Green V. Almand would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Green V. Almand (1809-1880) of Georgia

Thanks for your reply. Here is my reasoning on the Almands of Morgan Co.:

In the 1830 Morgan Co. census, a James Almon household listed on p. 269 includes one male 50-60, and one female aged 60-70 (???), 1 male under 5, 2 males 10-15, 2 males 15-20, and one male 20-30. Nearby is a Richard V. Almon aged 20-30 (believed born 1807 vs. Green V. in 1809), his wife aged 20-30, two males under 5, and one female under 5.

Also nearby is one John Dyer, aged 30-40. Jeremiah Wells' wife, Elizabeth Dyar, had a brother as well as a first cousin by that name, either of whom would be 30-40. Elizabeth's brother, John "Jackie" Dyer appears in the 1820 and 1840 census of Franklin Co., but is absent in 1830. Andrew Jackson Wells is believed to have been born in Morgan Co. in 1828 and later married Amanda Evaline Almand, the 2nd daughter of Green V. Almand. Green is in DeKalb Co. by 1830.

I have seen James Almon's wife, Mary, referred to as Mary V. Almand, and this makes me wonder whether Green and Richard (presuming for an instant that they are siblings) might both have had one of their mother's family names. I have also seen James M. connected to Thomas Almand and Ann Ussery, which might explain why one of Green V. Almand's great-grandchildren has the unusual name of W. U. Almand (Welcome Ussery Almand recurs in the Newton and Elbert Co. families).

Asmon (reminds me of a Seinfeld episode!), who is in DeKalb for both the 1840 and 1850 census, had to come from somewhere...could he be one of the two 15-20 year old males in the James Almand household?

Any additional info appreciated.

William Allman, DeKalb Co., GA, 1840 Census

Can anyone help me identify William Allman who appears in the 1840 census of District 636, DeKalb Co., Georgia, in the 1840 census? William is aged 60-70 with a female of the same age, and one male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, one female <5, and two females 10-15.

Does anyone have ideas on what line this William belongs to and where he came from?

He is the right age to be the child of John Richard Allman, b. abt 1750 in NC, who is said by some to have had a son William who married Lovey Casey, but I have yet to find evidence of what happened to this William.

There is a William Allman in Franklin Co., GA, in 1830, but he is listed then as being 60-70 and has no one in the household who would correspond to the 60-70 year old female in the 1840 DeKalb census.

Thanks for any assistance.

--John Gillon

Mary Aulman (Almand) b. abt. 1833 Appears 1870 Fulton Co. GA

I need to identify one Mary Aulman who appears in the 1870 census of Fulton Co., GA, aged 37, born GA. Also in the household are:

--Thomas 19 GA
-- Martha 16 GA
-- Nellie or Hellie 15 GA
-- Robert 12 GA
-- James 10 GA

This household lives alongside a number of households related to my other lines (Brown, Wells). If I can identify this family, it may help me find the parents of my 3rd great grandfather, Green V. Almand b. 1809 GA. I believe Green's brother was Asmon R. Almand.

I used to be in touch with a lady called Laura, whos grandfather was a William Almon, who married Isabella Tallon, she did live in Texas. She could probably give you lots of information. We have lost touch and I would really like to get back online with her, She and I are 4th cousins, but not on the Almon side. I have a whole lot of new family information for her. Maybe you know her? If none of this is relevent to you, I'm sorry for taking up your time.
Wendy.

Good Day,

I'm at my wit's end with this couple. There are, apparently, abundant ALMONs on the Halifax area, but relatively few with Lunenburg connections. William and Sarah had a daughter, Mary Jane Almon, born @1846, in Lunenburg. She was one of at least two, possibly, three wives of Edwin Bartlett Handspiker, and likely mother to MOST if not all of his 10 children. I've precious little to go on but her parent's names from her marriage record in 1866, to Edwin at Digby County.

ANYONE with information on William and Sarah, please contact me as any attempts I've made to find them have fallen dreadfully short.

Cheers,

Jared

It appears that Louisa County, Virginia was the home of Mr. Elijah Sansom and his family. Please note, there are numerous Almon's with various spellings living around Isle of Wight and surrounding Counties from the 1600's on. Read the HISTORY OF ECHOLS FAMILY, by MILNER ECHOLS 1850. Milner Echols, Born: 1772, Halifax County, Virginia
Married: 1790 Died: After 1850. Milner married Susannah Sansom in 1790. (Susannah Sansom was born in 1768 in Virginia and died after 1850 in Walton County, Georgia.)

This should take away some of the confusion I had on Hezekiah Almond(2) from Charlotte, Virginia who was married to one Polly Lee. The following information was found on the Internet. It also shows Hezekiah Almond's(2) tie in to the Maherrin Church, which I originally thought was Hezekiah Almon(1) Church.

----------
In Charlotte Co. Va. Will Bk 2:298 is will of John Lee, Senior of Charlotte County, dated 7 Nov 1804 and recorded 4 Feb 1805. The will names:
1. Thomas Lee - son [remained Char.Co.]
2. Jane Pearson
3. Polly Almond [m.Hezekiah Almond,lived Maury Co.Tn]
4. John Lee jr
5. Edward Lee
6. Joseph Lee7. Henderson Lee
8. Sally Crenshaw, chil. of.
9. William Lee - son
Signed: John Lee

The estate was divided in 9 portions, with certain provisions.
The will does not state relationship of all legatees, but
Charlotte Co. marriage records show Jane/Jeane, Polly & Sarah were daus. of John Lee. My own deduction is that Henderson Lee was a grandson, the only child of Ambrose Lee, dec'd, thus received a full one ninth portion.
----------
Charlotte Marriages

24 Oct 1796 HEZEKIAH ALMOND & POLLY LEE, dau. of JOHN LEE.
Note: Minutes of Maherrin Church show Hezekiah Almond remov. to TN 1804. Rec. of TN show he settled part of Williamson that became Maury. Dau. Elizabeth m. in Maury 1827 to WILLIAM T. LEE. Don't know his identity.
-----------
WB 2:165; 24 Feb. 1798; 7 Apr. 1800
Will of Elizabeth Almond
Dau. Peggy Almond
Eldest son Elisha Almond
Son Hezekiah Almond
Sig: Elizabeth (X) Almond
Exec. son Hezekiah Almond
Wit: Robert DeGraffenreid; John Lee; Ambrose Hailey
