Hi Pam!

I got the information in for that section of the family. In order to invite you, I need your ID or e-mail address. I will attempt to use "ladysmurf71957" right after I post this.Let me know if you can't get in.

Altaffer is on my mother's side. I was fortunate enough to get to know both Vera (Great Grandmother) and Logan (Great Grandfather) as they lived just two houses away! I remember they had all of their back and side yard planted with a large garden, complete with fruit trees, bushes and Grandpa's coon hounds in the back. As they got older, the garden grew smaller, but Grandpa worked it everyday up to the day they had to take him to the Rest Home where Grandma already was. AS you can see by his vital statistics, he barely missed his 100th birthday. Gladys has his letter from the president congratulating Logan on reaching 100.

Thank you SO much!!

Hello!

I have two different ends of Altaffers, and they don't seem to meet. I, too, am looking for ancestors of Harry L. (Logan or Lauren) Altaffer b. 02 FEB 1857 in Nebraska, m. 31 DEC 1885 to Nettie Schlegel (b. 1864) and died in Montpelier, Ohio on 14 MAY 1945.

I also have a family history caled "The Altaffer Family: A Short Chronicle of the Altaffer Family of Viginia and Ohio" by Maurice Willard Altaffer c. 1968.

There seem to be so many Altaffers (and spellings) all from the same areas. It would seem they have to connect somewhere, somehow! I would like to find the missing parts and put together something that would show all the Williams County, Ohio Altaffers and their ancestry.

I have a copy of Harry's Obit. It states that he is the only son of John and Sarah (Bly) Altaffer, was born in Nebraska on 08 FEB 1857.

Please let me know if I can fill in some blanks for you! Which child of Harry and Nettie's are you researching?

Hope to hear from you!

Cindy Hostettler (Granddaughter of Gladys Altaffer)

Sarah Ann was the third child born to Rosanna Woolf and Henry Bly. My gg grandmother Ellen Elizabeth was the second child. Married at age 17, Rosanna's sixteenth child was born when she was 49 years old. Our line is descended through Ellen's son, Walter Rufus Bloodhart. My sister and I will be happy to share information and would also appreciate any information that you have.
Yes you are right Emerson was a twin. Did you know that he was married twice? The frist time was to a Ruth Geraldine Cummins. They married in 1922, she died in 1926. She is buried next to her parents in Floral Grove Cemetery Williams County. Then he married Dorothy Cramer. Do you have the book Alderfers of America written by:Helen Alderfer Stanley. I have a phone number you can call to see if they have any more if you don't have one.

Pam

I talked to Logan and Virgie back in the 1970s. Virgie's 1st husband Manley is also my family. I was told by the Altaffer family that Harry's mother died when he was young, and his stepmother was cruel to him, so he came to Wms County to live with his mother's relatives- The Blys. There was a ninth child for Harry and Nettie. I'm surprized you don't have him as he was a twin to your Emerson. His name was Emery- of course he was born 21 Jan 1901 at Montpelier per birth record, and the death record stated he died 21 March 1901 in Williams Co. He is buried at Floral Grove, Madison Twp.- south of Pioneer. Lucy Altaffer, wife of Abraham Dick of Williams Co., is another line I haven't been able to connect. Some of them also left Williams Co., to Amboy Twp. Also a Frederick Altaffer born 1820 is not connected. He had a large family and some of them came from Wms Co., and got married in Amboy Twp.- having these other Altaffers/descendants as witnesses at their weddings. If we could get your line connected to mine, I can take you back further. They are probably descended from George Altaffer & Catherine Bushong. I am descended from both the Bushongs and Altaffers. The Bushong plantation was down in the same area as the Altaffers. Bushongs also came to Williams Co. same time as the Altaffers, Dicks, and others.
Thank you for the info. here is a little that might help you connect the line. Harry and Nettie had 8 children:
Myrtle Mary, Ross, John, Virgil, Rosie, Henry Logan, (my grandfather) Emerson and Frank.

Please let me know if this helped you

The parents of Harry Logan Altaffer, husband of Nettie Schlegel, were John Altaffer & his wife Sarah Bly. Sarah was the daughter of Henry Bly and his wife Rosanna Woolf (this spelling could be off on the surname).
You are related to me, but I can't tell you how. I have never been able to connect this line of Altaffers to my family, but we all came to Williams Co., Ohio via Richland Co., Ohio. Before that Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. It would be over by Gettysburg in PA. I never added them up, but maybe about 50 or 60 of us came to Williams Co. Your Emerson's brother Henry Logan- called Logan use to live in Amboy Twp., Hillsdale Co., MI, just across the line of Wms. Co. I am from there, my parents knew him and some of the others. Some of the family resettled from Wms. to Amboy Twp. early on.

I found the 1860 census record for Harry Altaffer. He is with his father J Altdoerffer and mother Sarah Altdoerffer, though names are not spelled correctly.

1860 - Salem, Columbiana, Ohio; Roll M653_949; Page: 399; Image: 374.
J Aldtrefer 28 OH
Sarah Aldtrefer VA 26
Harry Aldtrefer 2 NE

Harry Altaffer is with his father John Altaffer and step-mother Catherine (Cassel) on the 1870 census in Crestline, Crawford, OH.

This John Altdoerffer may be the John Altdoerffer ae 17 with parents John ae 52 and Mary ae 48 on the 1850 Fairfield, Columbiana, Oh census. Or this John ae 17 might be another John Altaffer (John P Altaffer).

I also realized that the John P Altaffer who married Anna Snider in Columbiana Co OH in 1869 is not the John Altaffer who married Catherine S Cassel in 1867 in Richland Co, OH.

I would appreciate any information on the two John Altaffers from Columbiana Co., OH, and to which line they belong.

My paternal line is the Altdoerffer / Altaffer line out of Ohio. I read your posting and found a record on the 1870 census which seems to fit.

1870 Crestline, Crawford, Ohio
John Altaffer 38 OH, RR Conductor
Catherine S Altaffer 22 OH
Harry L Altaffer ll NE
unnamed daughter Altaffer 27 days old OH, b May

This John and Catherine may be the John Altaffer who married Catherine Cassels in OH. He also may be the John Altaffer who married a Anna Snider as Catherine appears to be his second wife.

I am interested in seeing if this John Altaffer is part of the Altdoerffer line out of Columbiana County, OH and Richland County, OH. Appreciate any replies and corrections.
