I believe this is the correct Milton Rasley, though Ray and Medith were not his first wife's children (Matilda Brown), they were the children of my Great-grandmother Sadie Riegel according to her obituary. My grandfather is her son by her third and last husband Harry Altemus. I still do not know more than that, however. Thank you for the information!

ALTEMUS - COFFIN - TIEL connection? ( Phila, PA, 1800's - 1900's)

Trying to figure out the connection between the Altemus' of mid 1800's Philadelphia and the TIEL & Coffin families of the same era. Several Altemus' seemed to be named Lemuel Coffin Altemus, and then there is a businessman named Lemuel Coffin, who joined up with the Altemus family ( Dry goods?) and then a Lemuel Coffin TIEL ends up in there as well.

The lengthy 1895 news article about Lemuel COffin's will probate, mentions some of my relatives, in a separate paragraph/listing than his employees ( that inherited in the will) . Lemuel COFFIN seemed to be very generous, as many people who inherited from his death were employees.

I have not been able to connect the Coffin family with the Altemus yet... I guess someone married into the other family.

Charles Altemus

I have been researching my Maternal grandfather who's name is Charles H. Altemus (I believe the H stands for Harry). I know now his mother's name was definitely Sadie and I believe her maiden name was Riegel/Reagle/Riegle (I've seen it spelled a few ways). Sadie was married twice before having my grandfather. First marriage was to someone with the last name of Germantown or Germanton. From this union came my grandfather's half-brother Arthur and half-sister Olive. Then she married Milton Rasely/Rasley and had my grandfather's half-brother Ray and half-sister Medith. Then in the 1930 census she is listed as the head of the household with her daughter Medith, my grandfather Charles, his sister Beulah, a Boarder named Harry Altemose, and Sadie's sister Hattie. I don't know the name of my grandfather's father, but I think it may be Harry. Does anyone out there know anything about this Altemus line??

I doubt my ability to help further.

There are no known Underwoods in my family tree.

Also, there are no other known photos of the Altemus family except for a later portrait of George W. Altemus and a photo clipped from a periodical of his son, Lewis Redner Altemus (my Great Grandfather.

It took me about 25 years to find the later picture of George W. Altemus, with the notation on the back that he was my Grandmother's Grandfather. Through that notation I was able to make sense of the older image.

I am not a serious genealogist, and only posted to this thread because I recognized the name Mary Ann(e) Altemus and was struck by the similarity to your photo including "Aunt Mollie".

Best wishes and good luck in your search.

Elwood Altimus

My husband is Mitch Altimus and is a cousin of Rita Trupp. We have lost contact with her. This is what I have on our part of the family. Mitch's dad was Elwood B.C. Altimus and he married Jessie Mitchell in White Haven. His parents were Elwood J. Altimus and Bertha Leister in White Haven. We found that in 1930 they were separated and there children lived in 3 diffrent households. Their children were Elwood, Blanch, Jeannett, Elizabeth, & Edwin. Elwood was married to Miranda in White Haven. Elwood was a blacksmith. Elwood Altimus the blacksmith is a far back as we can go. If anyone can help with any other roots I would appreciate your help.

There were also two sisters that from Jonas Altemus children that had a hotel in Atlantic City. I also have some old pictures.

Christine, I believe I might have some additional information on the Altemus family. I am related through my grandmother and connected with someone who had researched this side of the family. I believe it is the same family even though I have the spelling as Altimos for some of the family. My records show that Hans Peter show was born in 1700 had a brother and sister. His brother was Johann Friederich Altimos born in 1716. The sister was Maria Catharina Altimos - born 1707. Johann married a woman named Susannah - but I have no further information on her. Johann and Susannah had 6 children:
Juliana Margaret Altemus b. 3/11/1760 Germantown PA
died 1848 (this is the line I have followed).
Susanna Altemus b. 1748
Johann Frederick Altemus b. 1751
David Altemus b 1755
Leonard Altemus b. 5/26/1763 Germantown, PA
Johann Jacob Altemus b 5/22/1765 Germantown, PA

I also have information that Johann Friederick 's father was Wilhelm Altimos born 1675. He married Anna Caecilia Reinmuller in 1700 in Offenbach Germany. She was born about 1676 and died November 30, 1734.

I hope you find this information helpful - any feedback you might have would certainly be welcome

This is especially interesting to me.

My GGGGGGgrandfather was a Richard Lee, who converted to the Moravian Church in Bethlehem at age 84 (a noteworthy enough event that it is listed in the records there).

My Ggrandmother, Matilda Lee married Lewis Redner Altemus, in Philadelphia or Camden. Children Lewis, Mary and Evelyn Lee Altemus (my grandmother).

My records are in storage right now, so I may not be much help to anyone.

Looking for Peter and Abby

Does anyone know of a Peter Altimus/Altemus marrying an Abigail Peddicord? She was born in 1849-1850 in Indiana Co., PA. After they were married they disappeared off the face of the earth.
Peter and Abby had 3 children: David Andrew born in 1870 in Smith Station, PA supposedly Indiana Co.,PA; Margaret and Pearl. I have no birth years for the girls. The only reference to
Peter is on David's marriage application to marry Hannah Jane Wilkins. Can anyone tell me if there is an Abby or Peter Altimus buried in any of the Indiana Co. Cemeteries? We have been looking for
this missing link for over 20 years!! We have all the info from the original Althomuss families coming over on the ship "Lydia" in 1739 and 1740 all the way down to where Peter and Abby
should be but cannot find the link to our family! Please help.

PS. I have a picture of what was left of Eve's gravestone (Adam's wife). We traveled quite a distance (over plowed fields and up large hills!)
to get to the original burial site of Adam and Eve, only to find Eve's (the only one left) in pieces. So we pieced it back together and took a picture. This was about 21 years ago.
If any of you are the one who ran to get us directions and also flashlights to find our way in the dark, I thank you again!
Please email me if you have any info on Peter and Abby or if you'd like to see the headstone of Eve (Shaffer) Altimus. Thanks! Deb dma@nci2000.net

Seeking information about Martha Altemus b. abt 1817 in Connecticut, later lived in Philadelphia. Altemus is probably her married name. Her husband was born in France or Connecticut (extracted from various censuses). Her daughter Rebecca married William P. Butler and lived in Philadelphia. 1880 census shows widow Martha living in William’s household. 1860 & 1870 censuses show her as a dressmaker in Philadelphia, husband not listed.

was the first born Nicholas b. 5/20/1745? I've just started researching my Altemus ancestors, and have records of two Nicholas'. one b. 1745 and the other b. 8/31/1783. I have indenture papers of Nicholas Altemus of Ross in Monroe Co., son of Nicholas Altemus deceased. Jacob Brong is his guardian, and he was apprenticed to Joseph Knauss, saddler and harness maker on March 28, 1846. This Nicholas must have been born in the1930s, but I haven't found anything else on him so far I am descended from Joseph Altemose/Altemus b.Oct. 17, 1812 and Anna Flyte b.abt. 1812.
I have my grandmother's birthday book from 1885 with over 23 Altemuses listed in it. I also have several German Bibles. Don't know if I could be of help--would be mostly dates or spouse--I'm just starting to research this side of my family.
