I am interested in Steve Alters post of October 2003.

I am seeking more information about George Alter. My Great Grandfather, Christopher Burmood, married Sarah Fannie Alter(s) in Huntsville, Illinois on 16 Sep 1873. Fannie died 15 Jul 1885. Her mother Elizabeth ? was married to George Alter, but I do not have his birthdate, their marriage date, or her maiden name.

Since Steve Alters' ancestors were living in Huntsville, Illinois, at the comparable time, this George may be the same as the George in his tree.

Does anyone have further information about George?

Simon S. Alter, one of the oldest men and residents of the city, died last Tuesday, at his home on Sacramento Street. At the age of ninety-one the "grasshopper was a burden" that made him an easy prey to the prevailing scourge of pneumonia. He was a native of Pennsylvania, whence he came to this state in the very early fifties. He was for many years an agent of the Ditch Company in this city and was one of the most accommodating, genial and respected of our citizens. Some years ago as a remedy for failing health he removed to Los Angeles, but returned and spent the last months of his life in Placerville. He leaves a wife, a son, George, and a daughter Marian.

His funeral Thursday was conducted by the Rev. W.H.P. McDonald, from his late residence on Sacramento street. The interment was in Union Cemetery.
Was captured at Gainesville, Florida, August 17, 1864, and was sent by a circuitons route to Macon, and from there to Charleston, South Carolina, and confined in the Jail yard without shelter, under the fire of the “ Swamp Angel Battery.” From Charleston we were sent to Columbia, South Carolina where we had no rations but corn meal and sorghum molasses. No tents or shelter was provided for us, we had to dig holes in the ground to protect ourselves from the weather. When it rained these caves were no use to us, as the water ran into them. We were removed from sorghum to Camp Asylum. There was no improvement in the rations or treatment. The men who had money managed to avoid extreme suffering from hunger; But those who had none suffered very much. I have seen United States Officers gathering old bones from a rubbish heap, to pound up and boil in water to make soup. When on our road for exchange we were allowed to travel without being very strictly guarded. At Goldsboro I saw a train load of our prisoners brought in, some dead, and other dying from exposure and starvation, scarcely rags enough upon them, to cover their nakedness. Some of them were idiotic. About one hundred and fifty sick men were left lying on the ground without shelter, and so weak that they could not move out of their own filth. They had neither medical care nor food to eat but what some kind-hearted Rebel woman gave them. This brief sketch can do but little toward conveying an idea of the terrible sufferings of our prisoners. They cannot be written.
JOSEPH B.
Joseph Alter was born in Pennsylvania in 1854. Martha Alter was born in
> Ohio
> in 1870. They are the son and daughter of William Alter and Elizabeth C.
> Smith and the grandson and grandaughter of Jacob Alter and Anna C.
> Kessler.
> Jacob Alter, the grandfather of Joseph and Martha is recorded in the
> federal
> census of 1820 & 1830 he is recorded as being in Union county PA. The
> federal census of 1850 records Jacob and family as being in Brown township
> PA. The 1860 census records Jacob and William as still living in Brown
> Township. William in now married and has is own family including my great
> grandfather Joseph . The 1870 census shows William and family living in
> Perry township Ohio, this was where and when Martha was born, she is
> recorded as baby 11months old. The 1880 census shows William and family
> including Matha as living in West Indiana, Indiana County,PA.
> Hope this helps
> Edward Alter
Parents of Francis & Anna Alter Plum, Allegheny, PA

I am trying to find the natural parents of Francis and Anna Alter. They were adopted sometime before June 1870 by Robert Black and his wife Jane Ann (McLaughlin) Black in Plum, Allegheny Co. PA. In 1870 Francis is 6 yrs. old (born abt. 1863/64) and Anna is 4 yrs. old (born about 1865/66) both in Pennsylvania. Robert and Jane do not appear to have had any children of their own and lived in Plum, PA from 1850-1880 and Robert is still living there in 1900, Jane deceased. Any help would be appreciated.

BOOK: Up from the Sod by Carl Hutchinson, son of Maria ALTER Hutchinson

I bought a copy of the above book which is the family history of Carl Hutchinson b. 1896. His grandfather was Frederick Hutchinson who in 1854 moved the family from Norwich, Vermont to Clay, Iowa where he secured some farmland. His wife was Charlotte and he had a two year old son Charles.

Charles Hutchinson married Maria, the daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Alter. In 1878 Charles, his brother Ed, and Frederick moved from Clay, Iowa to Smith Center, Kansas. The rest of the book continues the Hutchinson family saga.

I am not related, but I believe this book would be valuable to anyone related the the Hutchinson and Alter families.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this book

The Alter Family Genealogy is a web site that is dedicated to research of the Alter surname. Associated surnames are Koenig as well as others. The Alter descendants that settled in the Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York states have been documented going back to Germany in the late 1500's I have proof documents and listing on my web site at http://www.altergenealogy.net Send email to me first. Registration for access to the private section of the web site is required to protect privacy etc. If you have any questions, email me at don@altergenealogy.net I will be glad to answer questions and help in your research. My research of the Alter line is now as complete as I can get it going back to the late 1500's in Ussigheim Germany and France. The Munsch Surname is just about completed as well.

Don Alter

So sorry but I only notice your reply today when my 10 year old son Marcus googled my name. I have looked up Swalava on the map and as I am sure you know it is now in the Ukraine and had acquired a new spelling. Monkatsh is another name that kept cropping up and again it has a new spelling. Hardly any Jews left there if any at all. Where do you live now? I do hope you get this message. The first reply was from a cousin I didn't know existed who now lives in the USA and whom I met in Paris.
Kind regards

Norbert Alter
