Alto from Finland in 1909

Hi! I am in search of some family history. I have a great grandfather that came from Finland in 1909 or so, to the US via Canada. He was born in 1888 or so and married to Effie Harvey, his name is JOHN ALTO. I am not sure what part of Finland he came from but I think I found his entry. I cannot read the writing on the important parts! How do I research further into the Finish history?

So if anyone knows of her three daughters, Shawna, Shannon, or Shelia, at the time thier madin name was Smith, dont know if they have married, any way please tell them I am looking for them. Thanks for any help!
jason palmer

Hi, I don't know of Alto's in Texas, but my former husband was William Francis Alto, Jr. now deceased, but he came from Richmond, VA. The family name, I believe, was Altiere
from an area near Naples, Italy. I know very little other than his father, William Senior who married Dorothy Riddick. Her family dame from Gates County, North Carolina

Ellie,
Sorry, Alto is a very uncommon name, but I have not come across a Nancy Suzanne in my research. My Alto's came from Finland, and mostly settled in Western PA in the very early 1900's. if you have any indication of such a relationship, I have some data from the early 1900's census.

Good Luck, Dick Alto

If you have any information at all about the port of departure or the port of arrival, that can halp. Also the year of immigration is useful. There are several internet sites that can help with leads, but it will be a mater of narrowing down, and arduous process at best. Let's carry this on via email, it is more convenient, my email is farfarx4@aol.com. I mentioned some other Alto's in PA, Charles, Celia, Alex are some.

Send me an email.

Dick

It is interesting to meet another Richard Alto. I am 68 yo. My Grandparents immigrated from Finland (Helsinki?) in 1903 or 1906 and lived outside of Pittsburgh PA. Their names were George and Edla (later Ella. It seems we are not directly related. I do however have some additional Alto names from an earlier census. I'll look that up and send you added information. I have not been successful in finding where thay lived in Finland, though they were Swedish speaking Finns. There is a Swedish Finnish Historical Society located in Seattle -- they were not helpful to me, but might work for you -- they are on the internet. I will send more once I dig it out.

Dick

Hello,
It is somewhat difficult at this minute to find the words to say, other than by total chance I came across your inquiry on the genealogy message board. My father's name is Wm.R. Alto and my mother's name is Rose. I was born in 1956 in Bethlehem, PA and am an only child. My parents divorced two years later and my father did not keep in touch; therefore, I didn't know him or his family. I have often wondered about the other half of my family. I was raised for the most part of my life in Pt. Arthur, TX.
What I do know of my father is that he was employed by FOSTER WHEELER. He had green eyes and so do I.

If you would like to reply, please e-mail me at this address. This is more than coincidental.

Respectfully,

Renee
