Well, I finally found out who the brothers were with some thorough investigation on the internet. In the 1852 Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa census the three brothers were listed: James Alton, Charles Alton and Matthew Alton. James Alton was a blacksmith. They all had the same immigration date of 1851 and all had parents from Ireland. --plan to visit the Keokuk area to find gravesites next! Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have any other info on John Alton? My grandfather was John Alton and I have two very old pictures of women that have handwritten on the the backs " my girlfriend". He was born in 1906 and apparently was quite the ladies man. I know he traveled alot and did varies jobs until he settled down around 1940. Maybe one of these pictures is her? I will check the back again and see if there is a name? I could also scan the pics and send them to you. Maybe you will recognize the girls? They were very pretty ( alot prettier then my grandmother..lol!).

Who was Matthew Alton?

My husband's great grandfather was Matthew Alton (b. 1829 d. 1914)married to Eliza Mary Downing in Lee County, Iowa; moved to Parsons(St. Paul), Kansas. He emigrated through New Orleans with his mother and a few brothers. Who were these brothers from Ireland? The story is that his mother and several brothers settled near Keokuk, Iowas and he living with his mother until her death. We don't know the mother's name or the brothers' names. Then the story continues that Matthew, Eliza, Lucy 1yr old, went down by steamboat to Osage Mission, Kansas.

Mrs. Alton of Raber, Michigan in 1891

July 4, 1891 Page 1
Married Man and Married Woman Skip

Edward Johnson , a clerk in the Feltus store, eloped the other day with Mrs. Odeta Alton, the wife of an honest, hardworking man, Johnson left a wife and three or four children almost destitute. Mrs. Alton had no children. The affair has been the talk of the country round about Raber. Johnson was well known in the Soo and his bad behaviour surprises some.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a webpage called "Marriage Notices, Jan. 1891 - Dec. 1893."
Re: William Alton, 1700, Marblehead, Massachusetts

I would say it's quite possible, given that William Alton's line probably goes back to the earliest settlers of Massachusetts, making his line that of the first Altons in America. I haven't yet confirmed that, but I have dozens of such lines in Massachusetts, many of which extend back to medieval England, and I would expect the same with the Altons, though I haven't worked on that line in a while and haven't got it back that far yet. It's been my experience that the first families of America have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of descendants today, so, it's very probable your Altons come from this same line.

Gary

She was a cousin of the Immil/Immel/Emil family as well as the Siebold>Davis>Smothers>Nasfger/Naskar families. We have some very old tin type photo's of a great deal of our family members wwith these names printed on them. Unfortunately, some of them we are not sure of the spelling's. We could use some help and would appreciate any & all help we can get. There are 4/5 of us still researching our family lines and appreciate any one who can lend a hand. Thank you in advance.

We have no Edward Milners but we have several Edmund Milners in our tree until the name died out when three died in quick succession in infancy.

However we will be related. The Milners were one of the 12 big clans of Swaledale for centuries until nearly all of them left the dale about 1870.

Some went to the mill towns, some turned from lead mining to coal mining and others emigrated.

Some of them were supposedly left money in a secret bequest by Mary Milner Bowes, a farm girl who became the Dowager Countess of Strathmore.
