Re: Alviso family history

My great great great aunt was Barbara (Butron or Buitron) Alviso (born 1794) (married 1813) to Nicolas Alviso. My great great great grandmother on my father's side was Antonia Francisca (Butron) Garner (1814 - 1883). She married William Robert Garner (1803 - 5/15/1849) on 11/25/1831. Their son (one of 13) Jose Ygnacio Cecilio Garner (1841-1912) and Maria Valeriana Antonia de Jesus Garcia (Feb 1, 1841 to Apr 5, 1912)on 11-8-1866. Cotilda (Tillie) Garner (1887 - 1918) married Tibo "Santos" Trejo on 12/3/1899 at the California Mission San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA. Santos and Tillie Trejo are my Dad's parents. I have Manuel Jose Butron(Apr 8, 1776 to Feb 12, 1842) and Maria Ygnacia Rita Higuera (1778 - 1844) married on Jan 30, 1794 at California Mission Santa Clara, Santa Clara, Alta California, New Spain. Barbara G Butron and Antonia Francisca Butron are two of 15 children(4 of which 4 died at birth or lived up to 3 years of age). I have Manuel J. Butron's parents Manuel Butron (1927-1793) and Margarita Maria Dominguez (Epsen Indian)(1758 - 1815)married 5/20/1773 at California Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmel, Carmel, Monterey, Alta California, New Spain. I have as Maria Ynagcia Rita Higuera's parents Jose Manuel Higuera (1744 - 1828) and Maria Antonia Redondo (Arredonda) (1752 - 1834) married in 1769.
My name is Patricia Rose (Trejo) Thurlby.
I wonder if that Anegla Trejo is misspelled. I would think Angela OR Angel. On WWW.familysearch.org I found Domingo Alviso(1739 - 3/11/1777) and Maria Angela Trejo(1743 - 1803) married about 1772 in Mexico no sources though.

Terry,

I am very excited to hear from you! I have sent you a PM and email as well, let's connect and I would love to see photos of Phillip Michael Alviso.

I am surprised to hear the Native American thing was "wishful thinking" on his part. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised :) He also said his mother was "full blooded" French, making him half French. Not sure, yet, how much truth there is to that.

If anyone else wants to contact me, please do, my email is inbox at mailcan dot com.

-Jim Harley (born Gabriel Alviso)

He, like me, is half Mexican and half white. What nationalities I don't know.

It would be interesting to know if you look like Phillip or Michael.
I think this same man is also my father! Sounds like he had several children :) Here is my background:

Back in the early 1970's my mother (Kathryn) fell in love with a man who went by Michael Alviso, but he said his birth name was Phillip Alviso, but I think later he changed his name again to Michael Rain. I believe he was born in California with family around Monterey. I think he had two sisters, and his mother was half French or something? I think he also had ancestry of North and South American origin - Native American, Mexican, Peruvian? He was under 6 feet tall and back then was skinny with long black hair. My mom said he was so so handsome :)

I was born in 1973 in Colorado. Originally I was Gabriel Alviso but soon after I was born, Michael hit the road (he was a hard core hippy - always on the move, doing drugs, drinking) and we only saw him a few times after that. I think I was about 1 or 2 years old when I last saw him.

Terry, I am nearly positive the man you described in your post in my father. I already sent you a message about that.

Shane ... if you are still reading this ... sounds like this man is your father too, that makes us siblings if it is indeed the same man.

IF ANYONE KNOWS MORE ABOUT THIS MAN, PLEASE POST! Or please email me ... inbox at mailcan dot com. I would appreciate it!

-Jim Harley a.k.a. Gabriel Alviso

Hi Simona,
You can access ALL the mission records up to 1855 at:
http://www.huntington.org/Information/ECPPabout.htm

There's several different spellings of the name Albizu so try them. The program is slow and confusing, but spending a little time reading about it helps, especially the codes for the missions. It's been a great online resource to me for over a year.
Have fun, Bryce

Thanks for your response. As you can see, there are not too many previous responses. When you say you added the mission records, what do you mean? Is it a personal record you have, or something others can see and access? Do you have any other information about Alviso's?

Again, thanks for your response.

Simona Rios

I am also an Alviso. I have not been able to trace my family to Domingo or Ignacio. I think my grandfather was Frank or Francisco. I don't know if he was from Sonora but he married a Bessie (Vecente)Garcia, who's family was suppose to have come from Sonora. Do you have any connections to Garcia or have a Frank or Francisco born in about 1876 in your family?
My family lived in Gonzales, Salinas, Carmel, Coyote, and Burnett CA.
Would love to hear any information you might have.

Victoria,
I do not know if you are still doing research on the Madrids, Alvisos, Bejaranos. I have finally found the baptismal of Maria Fermina Cordero Plasencia. She was baptized at San Jeronim Catolica in Aldama, Chihuahua. I hope you respond. I have finally determined her surname is indeed Cordero as you suspected, and I want to tell you it was apparently recorded incorrectly by the priest who baptized Teofilo. I have also found Teofilos death record, and it is in Az. not New Mexico. Pilar Villalba his nephew reports Teofilos mother was Sista Cordero. So now, I at least have two sources that coincide. Fermina's parents were Rosa Plasencia as it appears on Teofilo's baptism doument, but her father is not Simon Coordero, but Santos Cordero. I am continuing research and have lots more on your Madrids than ever before. Let me know if you are interested in this information.
Augustine Alviso Biography 1886 (California)

AUGUSTINE ALVISO

Augustine Alviso was born at the Presidio of San Francisco, on the 28th day of August, 1809, and is the son of Josè Ygnacio Alviso and Margarita Bernal, two of the founders of California. At an early age he removed with his parents to the Mission of Santa Clara, where he grew to manhood. Here he was engaged, under his father, who was then administrator of that mission, in various capacities, mostly in the cultivation of the soil, overseeing and directing improvements then being made. On the 1st day of May, 1840, he was appointed by Jose Maria Amador foreman (mayor-domo) of the Mission of San Jose. He received from his predecessor as property belonging to said mission over 25,000 head of cattle, 40,000 head of sheep, and over 1,000 head of horses. There were also over 1,000 tame Indians, most of them engaged in various industries, and under the control of the mission authorities. In the year 1841 there was a great drought. The scarcity of feed was such that it was necessary to send the Indians to the nearest forests of trees to chop the limbs for the stock to feed on. The year 1842 was a favorable one for rain, the low lands being all inundated. On the 5th day of May, 1842, he commenced to build a house on the Rancho Potrero de los Cerritos (in Washington Township), having obtained permission from the Governor of California to do so. In December of the same year he removed, with his family, to the rancho ; and shortly afterwards obtained a grant of three leagues of land, in company with Tomas Pacheco, his brother-in-law, on which he continued to reside up to within one year past. While on his rancho, he engaged in the raising of horned cattle, sheep, horses, and in the cultivation of the soil. In the year 1844 he raised over 600 fanegas (120 1s.) of wheat, 200 of beans, and over the same quantity of corn. The market for all these products was the Presidio Ruso, in Bodega. The price of wheat then was $3 for a fanega ; for beans, $1.50; for corn, $3; the price of cattle was $1.50 per head. In the year 1844 he took part in expelling Governor Micheltorena from the country, and was taken prisoner by Gen. John A. Sutter. Through the assistance of his friend, the late Robert Livermore, in the autumn of the same year, while camping near the latter's house in Livermore Valley, he escaped. Augustine Alviso married Maria Antonia Pacheco, the daughter of two colonists, on the 7th day of May, 1831. There were born to them five children—one girl and four boys—all of whom are now living. His wife departed this life on the 15th day of June, 1871. Many of the immigrants and early settlers of the valley of Alameda will remember his hospitality and kindness of heart. It is gratifying to the members of his family that during his long life he has never been accused or even suspected of a dishonest act, or of breaking a promise, when once made. He is a good citizen and a distinguished patriot. At the time of the intervention against the Republic of Mexico by France, England, and Spain,' in order to establish the empire of Maximilian, still retaining his liberal sentiments, he aided General Placido Vega, the representative of the Juarez Government in this State, with his means and influence. Senor Alviso has a worthy descendent in his son Valentine, at present Supervisor for Murray Township.tentennial Yearbook of Alameda County, 1886
