The German name Amann was the title of the town mayor, or spelled Ammann in Switzerland.
Johan Pauli Amann was born 25 May 1775 in the tiny town of Sasbach in the district of Baden, Germany. Sasbach is on the Rhine River southwest of Baden-Baden and nearby French cities are Freiburg, Mulhausen and Colmar. Johan's father was Franciscus Amann (his ancestry still unknown) who married second on 25 Jan 1767 to Anna Maria Friderich (born 22 June 1738) who was daughter of Antonius Frederich and Anna Sophia Schirenmeyer. Anna's family had been in Sasbach since at least the mid-1600s.
Johan emigrated to America and arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1817 with at least 3 sons and by 1830 they were the first Amann family in Cincinnati, OH. He was last found to the north in Greenville, Darke County, OH about 1846 where his wife was Theresia.
Johan's children were Felician or John Felix Jr. (1798), Conrad, Elizabeth, Lorentz or Lawrence (1806 and Georg or John George (1808).
John Felix Amann married Barbara Sharrar (PA) and had Catherine, Rose Ann, Joseph, Elizabeth, William J., John Felix, Abraham, Sarah, Mary, Christian or Christopher, and Louisa. Several children went to Topeka, KS in the 1880s.
Lawrence Amann married Catherine Quick (OH; dau. of John & Catherine Quick) and had Rose Ann, Cornelius, David, Catherine A., Oliver, and Thomas. This lineage is still lost today.
George Amanns (see Amanns message board) married Sarah Brown (OH; dau. of William C. Brown and Mary Carpenter) whose first child was Eliza Ann Ring. Their other children were John, Mary, William C., George Alen, Franklin, Rose Ann, Charles, Isaac Harrison, David, and Anna Maria. George and the children moved in the 1850s to Bartholomew County, IN, then in the 1880s the sons moved to Knox County, TN.
I am descended through two of George Amanns' sons, George A. and Isaac H. Amanns. I have done extensive research and invite any inquiries and assistance in discovering more relatives.
Where did Franciscus Amann come from? Was he mayor in Sasbach and thereafter changed his name to Amann? Or might he have come from France which was just across the Rhine River? (I have seen at least one Amann immigrant stating in the U.S. census that he was born in Alsace-Lorraine - eastern France.)
Thus far no one from Lawrence's branch of the family has been located today...where are all of you?
