Researching Amann, Haefele, Mathis, Stoeckel (or Stockel with an umlaut 'O') Maria maried Raphael Haefele. I believe they were married in Hohenems Austria as that was where Raphael came from. He died in Rochester NY and I believe she did also. Their children were Aloisa, Louis, Sadie, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, Josephine Charles, Frank, and Crescentia. Aloisa married Phillip Jacob Mathis -- also from Hohenems. Any help would be appreciated.

George
george_mathis@msn.com

Sandra Rae Amann Tucson,Az

Hi, my name is Steve Amann I'm looking to find my daughter. Her name is Sandra Rae Amann. I lost contact with her and her mother when she was born. I just join the military at the time. So her and her mother was in Japan. But, after my training I tried to bring her and her mother to the United States, but her mother refused to come to States. And we went through a bitter divorce. And custody hearing. Her mother got custody of Sandra, because I was in the military. And I would be doing to much traveling , to be able to rise a child. So after that I set-up a payment for child support thru the military. with a payroll deduction. But by then Her mother moved and the military had no forwarding address. And I had no forwarding address to send her the child support. So I lost total contact with them for the last 22years. I just resently found out that they might have been living in Tucson Az. Where Sandra was enrolled at Sabino High School. But I'm not positive. So I'm trying to find out if it was her or not. I really want to know how she is doing, and if she would want me inher life or not.

Charles W. Amann message #41 10 sep 2000:

I am Gail Amann, my kids were trying to find out about their famly tree. Their gandfather is your Uncle Albert. All we had to go on were the names of Charles & Clara. I was browsing the mesage board & saw your entry with all of the brothers listed. We did not know anything about your Dad only his name. We had a few pictures we got from Uncle Bill's family after he died. My daughter is doing this for a school project & has been really frustrated as Albert does not remember much. Their Dad your cousin Kurt did not even know Charles was his grandfather. We have no information about Clara Harris so anything you could tell us would be greatly appreciated. At least we now have something about Charles, which unitl today we had a name with the wrong middle inital.

Hello, is anybody related to Christian Amann from the Wuerttemberg town of Wilflingen (near Rottweil), who emigrated to Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, with his wife and two children Hilde and Walter between 1922-1928? He was a carpenter and apparently lived in Cedar Avenue. He was my father's uncle. Maybe one of his descendants is interested in getting in touch with his/her relatives in Germany and update the family tree?
Doris Leibold

Johann Georg Amann

Scrolling through the messages I note another question about this 'George' Amann that I think I can answer. That George Amann was my great grandfather, in Galion, Ohio.
His son, my mother's father, was Fred Amann. Fred had two brothers, another George and William, the latter having been Galion's mayor for quite a few years. My mother's first cousin was Mildred Amann, who married Ivan Tuttle. He was the fixed base operator at the old Galion Airport, and Uncle William owned the land the airport was on, according to all I was told, when I learned to fly there in 1945. I never knew if Mildred and Ivan had children. If so, I have relatives named Tuttle...and perhaps some others on this board do, too. I would like to know, though.

I am new to this type of message board, but feel that I must tell this: I have my grandmother's Bible, dated 1896. She was Alice Selina Govey Amann. In the Bible is notation: George Amann did October 27th, 1905, aged 77 years.' This fits with the Johann Georg Amann's birth and death dates posted previously, as does George's 2nd wife, Barbara Frank. She was my great grandmother, and I recall her living her final days with my grandfather, George's son Fred Amann, and his wife, the above named Alice.
Also in this Bible is 'Fred Amann born March 4th, 1875, and: Alice Selena Amann born June 28th 1882. Married January 20th, 1902. Fred and Alice had five daughters, my mother Jessie being the second. I can give more information on this if anyone is interested. I know that we are related to the Schulers, Franks, Wislers, among others in Galion and vicinity.

Jules Amann m. Mary Ellen Spellman in LA>Son, Albert

Searching for information on Jules Amann, born abt 1870 in Germany. Died possibly before 1900. He married Mary Ellen Spellman on September 26, 1894 in Orleans Parish, LA. They had one son, Albert, born June 27, 1895 in Orleans Parish, LA. Mary died in 1897, when Albert was 2 years old. I find Albert (age 4) as a "boarder" in the household of Mary Elizabeth Lyons McDonald (age 49) (along with his 32 year old cousin, Mathew Nolan...also listed as a boarder). This McDonald lady is named as Albert's "Adopted" mother in his obituary. I have not found a "blood" relationship to this McDonald, but working on that too.

I do not know if Jules died before 1900, or if he just couldn't take care of a small child.

Lisa Cotten
MyKithNKin@aol.com

There is a pocket watch, at eBay #444512853 auction ending 30 Sep 2000, which has on its face: J. Amann, Sisson, Cal. It is also stamped on the inside back (where the speed adjustor is) with this added: 17 Jewels.

Who was he? Was he a California jeweler? Or was he a watchmaker? How old? No date seen. And I can't locate where Sisson is or was, perhaps central California.

The case is detailed and the yellow color may mean it is brass. It does not work and is missing the crystal.

I post this simply for your information. I do not know its value, either to collectors or as family keepsakes.

Charles Amann

I am a decendant of Charles Amann of Baden,Baden Germany. I have gone as far as I can in the U.S. on Family History. He came to Ohio and had 2 sons Charles and Henry born also in Germany. He was married to Roseanna, and I believe he was born in 1810. Roseanna was about 10 years older than he according to an 1850 census. In 1850 his son Henry was 19 and Charles was 14 Any information would be greatly appreciated! I am the sixth generation since they imigrated to the United States. Also I lived in Kerpen, Germany for 2 years while my step father was in the Armed Forces, unfortunatly I was to young and didn't fully know my family roots. Thank you!

Source of the name AMANN

Amann (or Ammann as is common in Switzerland) apparently came from the German word Ambetmann which meant magistrate or bailiff. It was later contracted to A'mann. It is hard to know if ALL those with AMANN or AMMANN ancestors are related. No doubt there are a number of distinct ancestral lines going back to the ones who adopted the name.

There are pockets of families in Switzerland (Ammann), Austria, Baden, Wurttemberg, Bavaria and Alsace-Lorraine.

This was brought to my attention by a fellow Amann descendant. (Could Ambetmann be the German equivalent of our English OMBUDSMAN - a court-appointed representative looking out for an individual's interests?) I'm glad our ancestors didn't use or choose the name Burgermeister!
