Hola!! I came across Elegio Jr.'s family I beleive in Buckeye Arizona. They own the Placita Resturant. They just celebrated 47 years. But when I was looking at the pcitures, most of them were from Agua Calients/Agua Prieta area. You can contact my mom's cousin Eddie Amabisca thru his wife her name is Dr. Eufemia Amabisca, at South Mountain Commnity College in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm also an Amavisca my TATA was Colonel Simon Amavisca, accoridng tothe story he was a Colonel for the Federales. My nana also was an Amavisca but I heard she had sister and were separated during the war. Eufemia wants to do a reunion of all the Amabisca/Amavisca families in Phoenix sometime next year. She is writing a book or something for the Simthonian Institute in Washington D.C.

The Aqua Caliente Cemetery will be documented this year for the Arizona Gravestone Photo Project (www.arizonagravestones.org). I'll be working on that project since many of my relatives are buried there. My paternal grandfather was Eligio Amabisca (he changed the spelling somewhere along the line from Amavisca to Amabisca). He was the son of Eligio and Josefa Amavisca. brother to Pedro, Ricardo, Santiago, Ygnacia, Raquela and Ramon.

Have any of you heard stories about an Augustin Regali or Regli that was with Josefa for some of the years that the elder Eligio was gone? This was either in Yuma, Arizona or Aqua Caliente.

Thanks!

All of the gravestones with Amavisca and Conde are in 'Aguas Calientes' dating from the early and mid 1800's. If anyone wants to preserve them and take pictures, I would advise ASAP, the gravestones are fading away soon from the dust/rain.

Aguas Calients used to be a Military camp during WW1, there is not much left of the town.

Re: Looking for ancestry

Hello Ruben,
My last name is also 'Amavisca'. The name 'Amavisca' is derived from 'old' latin, prior to italian, spanish, french, portuguese, and romanian. This name is approximately 2,000 years old - around the time of Jesus. This is something to be extremely proud of since most names do not survive more than a few generation due to the gene pool dilution process (i.e.- smiths, garcias, etc become predominant over time if you read documentation of surnames). It is derived from the latin word 'amovere' - meaning: to move. The name 'amavisca' is literally the subjunctive verb form for 'to move', a commanding form. For example, in italian, when you say 'capisca', this means "Do you UNDERSTAND" literally and commanding? Most people may say 'capisce', but this means 'do you understand?' in a nice way. Being latin based, this subjunctive form is more direct, with more passion, and strength that is not available in the standard english we use today. So if one were to say 'capisca?' that would be expressed with more strength, passion and force. The meaning was a person in italy that moved, made things happen, and created action. I have been thru various parts of Italy (Italia) and find names like 'visca', 'visco', 'movisco', and 'mavisca' in all the towns I have visited. In particular, going deeper south, towards the islands of Sicily, you will find more italian names with the '-a' at the end, rather than the '-i' names at the end (ie.- sciacca, toluca, marisca', 'trovata', etc). I hope that answers your question. I have studied this paradox and am a professor of linguistics and origin of languages.
