Many or most of the FHC branches have a microfilm reader/computer scanner available for your use. It takes a little bit of learning but is fairly simple for a average computer user. All the records are being digitized. It willl take several years. As far as I know they now ask you to submit a copy of the scanned Reel so they will have a copy as well. It is well worth doing.

I would find it odd that they were not catholic, However they could have lived closer to a town that was protestant.
In one of my Villages it changed from Protestant to Catholic 13 times depending on the Lord. You will need to try to find the history of Your village and the surrounding towns.
You may be aware that Bablefish can translate German fairly well in some instances and it will do web pages, this might help you in your research. Try googling your village and your surnames.
