I do recall from your research that you had a Valatin Amend from Partenstein/Bartenstein in 1803 and also some Amends from Burgsinn. Any other families from the area in the stader book?
Regards,
Ruth Amend

Many or most of the FHC branches have a microfilm reader/computer scanner available for your use. It takes a little bit of learning but is fairly simple for a average computer user. All the records are being digitized. It willl take several years. As far as I know they now ask you to submit a copy of the scanned Reel so they will have a copy as well. It is well worth doing.

I would find it odd that they were not catholic, However they could have lived closer to a town that was protestant.
In one of my Villages it changed from Protestant to Catholic 13 times depending on the Lord. You will need to try to find the history of Your village and the surrounding towns.
You may be aware that Bablefish can translate German fairly well in some instances and it will do web pages, this might help you in your research. Try googling your village and your surnames.

http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr

Hi Kurt,

Thanks very much for the information. The Schaupp family actually attented the German Presbyterian Church when they came to the US so I don't think they were Catholic. I only know this because their son was married at the German Presbyterian Church in NYC in 1866. George Schaupp & his wife Elizabeth (nee Erb) were buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in NYC so I am not sure just what religion they actually were. Thanks again for all the information I really appreciate it.

Hello Mike,
If they were from Baden, Their records would probably be in Karlsrue archives. Unfortunately, I don't know where the records archives for Ungstein are kept. This is something you will have to find out, might help to know what religion they were as some villages were either catholic or Protestant. Yours I assume were Catholic as the Church was Catholic in Ungstien,
Ungstein is a small hamlet of Bad Durkheim in the district Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. Ungstein has about 1350 residents and is located approximately 1 km north-east of Bad Durkheim.
Apparently had belonged to Bayern prevously.

www.ungstein.de

Bad Duerkheim
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_D%C3%BCrkheim

Bad Duerkheim District
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_D%C3%BCrkheim_%28district%2...

Rhineland-Palatinate
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tqpeiffer/Documents...

-------------------------
Ungstein, Micro filmed records are available from the LDS Family History Center closest to you for about $5.00.
Looking for informaiton on Ellen Clouse in conjunction with her mother's side, Caroline Patterson, a descendant of George and Anne Marigold Patterson who settled in Lanark County, Ontario in 1815. Their son George and his wife Ellen McLean emigrated to New York and later settled in Putney, Vermony. Ellen married Martin Simon Ament, born in Mexico, in California and for a time lived in New York where he was a translator. I believe she later married Harvey Miller. They were living in New York in 1910 near her aunt Janet Patterson Tucker

Re: How do you pronounce Ament?

Interesting question! We have been told that the name is pronounced ah-MENT by my grandfather who came from Europe. But it is commonly pronounced AY-ment in the states. Even I reffer to the name frequently as AY-ment, really rarely paying attention to its pronounciation. However when I pronounce it in its earlier form "AMEND" I pronounce it as ah-MEND, the same way they pronounce it in Germany.

Looking for siblings descendents of Elizabeth Amendt Herold. Parents were (according to her death certificte) Steven Amendt (b. Germany) and Madeline Nort Amendt (b. Germany). Elizabeth immigrated with her parents to NY. She married Stephen Herold and they had 5 daughters: Bertha (b. 1871), my G-Grandmother who married Charles Hoffmire; Grace who married Fred Buss; Caroline (b. 1889) who married Theodore Rieper; and two daughters who did not survive childhood (Rachel and one whose name is yet unknown). The family stayed in NYC as far as we know and did not travel to other states. According to an interviewed I conducted in early 2000 with Alice Reiper Branagan, Elizabeth Amendt Herold's grand-daughter, Alice said her grandmother's maiden name was definitely spelled AMENDT and the family had not changed it when they immigrated to the US. Alice died in 2007 at age 87.

AMENT of PA and Virginia from Essenheim, Rheinland-Pfalz. Who are they kin to?

Hello All,
For some time now, I have seen a geneology for the AMENT family found in Essenheim (Verwaltungsgebiet), Mainz-Bingen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany . This family would be on the west side of the Rhine, Near Mainz.
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/r/o/Craig-Trout...

I am wondering if any one on the list has found the history of this Ament /Aument /Ament family further back than the 1750's in Germany? I wonder if they are blending into the AMEND family of the same area? Were they Catholic? Possibly from Hesse?

Any information is appreciated!

Thank You
Kurt

I am trying to locate where my family came from in the 1850's. Apparently they were from a place called Ungstein but I don't know if that was a town, county or state. Any info would be appreciated. They came to the US in 1857. Does anyone know where they would have had to apply for permission to leave?

Thanks
Mike
