Hi Pheobe Amory is my Great-Great Grandmother and I recently inherited some of her favourite dishes when my aunt Beverlee passed away at age of 61... a cheese tray and a fruit bowl... I also have a copy of the book she wrote after she survived the sinking of the Lusitania and my Great grandmother Amory (her daughter) told me stories of my Great- Great Grandmother Pheobe when I was a little girl before she passed away. My Grandmother is Doris Pascoe now Penrose (as she remarried later in her life) and she is Pheobes grand daughter... she is now 97 yrs of age and turns 98 in April 2012... she has a huge picture of Pheobe hanging in her room.. I believe my aunt Carol will probably inherit it.

Confusion

I know that the Amory's and the Hembree's are related, but my question is where does the confusion end? When did people start using the name Emory and when did they start using the name of Hembree? I have alot of Hembree's, Embry's, Embrie's, and then I have even seen the name of Amory, but to be honest it's a little confusing? Can someone please tell me when the name of Emory was used and when did they start using the name of Hembree?

Thanks In Advance,
K. Chris Vickery

I'm trying to locate anything about my great grandfather.

Obviously his name was Robert Jefferson Amory, he was born in 1886, married Mattie Cobb at some point, had two children and died in 1926 when he drowned in a river in Jacksonville, FL.

Family history says he was born in or around Grafton, VA (near Newport News), his father was a fisherman, his father and mother died 'while out fishing'(I assume accident, boat sinking, etc) date unknown, he was raised by an aunt and uncle (names unknown).

I'm hoping to come across someone that has successfully linked to his parents or a sibling.

Any information or suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

Hi Shani, my Amorys are John Amory who married Barbara Haliburton Margaret Earle, her father wrote the famous Cayon Diary. They had a bunch of kids, one who was named Mary, who married John Abbott Howe, a newspaperman, who's grandfather founded a newspaper in St, Kitts. Mary is my connection to the Amorys.
One of Mary's brothers was named Charles Fox Amory. He married a sister of John A. Howe: Mary Howe, they had no children as far as I know. My mother was a cousin of Franklin Delano, the U. S. President and that connection came through an Amory, but I cannot find the connection yet. It would be great if you could help me, I have been looking for years. Thank you.

Hi Beth:-)I hope all is well with you. Not certain if you received a response to your inquiry as I am aware that this post is 1 1/2 years old, however I am responding to your inquiry.

My name is Shani Amory-Claxton. I was born in Nevis (St.Kitts-Nevis) in 1977;currently residing in Brooklyn NY for the past 26 years. My maternal grandparents are Walrond(born 1896) and Lucille Amory(born 1903);currently deceased. There are quite a few Amorys in states as well as still in Nevis and St.Kitts. I am aware based on the knowledge that I have that there are Amorys from St.Kitts not directly connected to us.

I am not certain regarding the persons you are inquiring about I would have to do some more research. However do feel free to contact me to further discuss the possibility we are related.

Sincerely,Shani

He had a copy of her book and a Lusitania pin at our old house in Toronto, hopefully he still has them.
Many thanks, I passed your article on to my dad. That's a lot of information and much appreciated.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to re-read her book, it's been a long time.

Thanks again..
Jeff and Ross Manser

My Great, Great, Great Grandfather was John Amory, he was a merchant and was married to a lady named Barbara Haliburton Margaret Earle. She was from the Isle of St. Kitts, British West Indies. In the St. Kitts and St. Eustatius area there were other Amory Families. Benjamin Amory and a cousin named Joseph Amory. They had children. There was also a John Amory and family. I got information from their Wills, but have not been able to connect the Families together, nor to my G G G grandfather.

Is there any Amorys here in the States who came here from the Caribbean? I sure would like to connect these families up and to mine as well.

Thank you. Beth Hill

AMORY of SC -- JOHN AMORY

JOHN AMORY b 1690-1700 England, of Charleston, SC came to Georgia in Dec 1737
then in Dec 1738 he went to Charleston to
become the overseer of the fever-stricken household of Robert Johnson Jr (1713-1775),
son of Gov. Robert Johnson (1677-1735).
JOHN AMORY brought his family from England and
became an Indian trader. He died in 1746 and
was buried Oct 5, 1746 at St. Philip's Parish
in Charleston. His family is somehow connected to the
family of JONATHAN AMORY (1654-1699) who was
Speaker of the House of Commons of the Carolinas and THOMAS AMORY
of Boston, a son of Jonathan.
The son(s) of JOHN AMORY took on the spelling
EMORY and EMRAY and those who remained in SC
became EMBRAY or HEMBREE.

Any information on the AMORY family of SC
is appreciated -- the THOMAS AMORY line is
fairly well documented but the missing AMORYs
(JOHN and family--my ancestors) are not.

Amory/Hamrick surname

I have read that the surname Hamrick was originally Amory with other variations. I have heard that when people came from Europe, their names would be Amory when they left and
were transcribed to Hamrick. Does anyone have this variation in their tree? Would be interested to hear your families origin. My first recorded Hamrick in this country was Patrick Hamrick in the late 1700's to early 1800's with no one found before that. Would like to see if I can find someone earlier.

Isabella Amory, b. Alnwick, UK, 1827

My g-g-grandfather was George William Barnes Sr., born in 1820 (place unknown). In January 1865 he married Isabella Amory (b. Alnwick, Northumberland, 1827) in Tenby, Pembroke. His occupation was given on the marriage certificate as 'Butler' and I know from the November 1865 birth certificate of their only son, George William Barnes Jr. (born in Tenby) that George and Isabella Barnes later became 'lodginghouse keepers' of a hotel at 4 Croft Terrace, Tenby.

Isabella Barnes is listed as a widow living with her only child George William Barnes Jr. at 16 The Norton, Tenby, in the 1881 census. George William Barnes Senior must therefore have died sometime between 1865 and 1881.

Isabella Amory's father is listed as 'William Amory, China Merchant' on the former's marriage certificate.

If anyone knows anything about these people I would be very glad to hear from them.

Best Wishes

Matthew Barnes
