AMOS in East Kent, ENG, pre-1850

Hi -- I am interested in hearing from anyone who is researching the AMOS surname (or any spelling variants) in East Kent, ENG, pre-1850. I have a lot of info about this surname in this location which I'd be willing to share with anyone who has a connection.
I am particularly interested in finding my 4 times great grandfather, John Amos, born c1750-60. Married to Mary HOLLINGSBURY at Molash 12 Aug 1777. He was a widower at the time. (Who was his first wife?) John died at Chilham, Kent in 1831. Regards, Andrea Vogel (western Canada)

I'm trying to find relatives. William was my g-grandfather. I heard that there were five Amos bros who came over before the revolutionary war and settled around Boston. My relative stayed loyal to King George, so that brother moved his family to Canada. I have my paternal grandfather's birth certificate (DOB: 5/5/1891). That's where the info comes from. The story about the brothers came from my grandmother.

Amos in New Brunswick, Canada and ROX, Scotland

I’ve been tracing my AMOS ancestry through the US and back to New Brunswick,
Canada and before that to Scotland. My GGG grandfather, James Amos, with his wife
Janet Armstrong and son Robert (all of Roxburghshire), arrived in 1821 on Prince
Edward Island by way of Dumfries, then relocated to Botsford Parish, New Brunswick
in 1822. Dates from their MI’s are:

James Amos b. ca 1771 (ROX) d. 8/12/1855 (NB)
Janet Armstrong b. ca 1775 (ROX) d. 11/29/1865 (NB)
(MI refers to Janet as "Jenny")

My GG grandfather (their oldest son, I believe), Adam Amos arrived in August, 1829
from Dumfries, Scotland. He was accompanied by his wife, Ellen Craig, and at least
two sons, John and Robert. Several sources indicate they were from Roxburghshire -
no parish info yet. Estimated birth years for them are:

Adam 1791 (d. 1886)

Ellen 1795 (d. 1875)

John 1821 (d. 1887) (note, MI gives birth year as 1829)

Robert 1823

My search was confused by several references to Dumfries as my family's origin,
however, I now suspect that Dumfries was the port of embarkation, rather than their
home. James and Janet's MI's state that they were natives of Roxburghshire. If anyone
in Roxburghshire can shed light on my forebears in the region, I’d love to hear from
them. I am anxious to learn which parish they came from, their occupations, the names
of their parents and whether any close relatives remained in Scotland after they
emigrated to Canada.

All of the first generations of Amos colonists were prosperous farmers, so I suspect
they may have been farmers in Scotland, as well. Our family for the last three
generations has been Presbyterian, so I suspect that my ancestors were members of the
Church of Scotland. This family is buried at the Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery in
Cadman’s Corner, NB.

Thank you,

Bob Amos

Grants Pass, Oregon

Barbara Amos Denzer (b.1867), wife of Fred Denzer, lived Winona Co., MN

I have an original photograph of “Fred & Barbara Denzer”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was processed by a studio in Winona, MN, and was taken in about the 1930s. Fred looks about 80, and she is in her 70s.

I found Frederich and Barbara Denzer in the 1900 census for Winona Co., MN, with his DOB Mar 1855 and hers Nov 1867. OneWorldTree shows they married March 1881 and he died Jan 1943. 1920 census Winona Co., MN shows they lived with son Fred. Son’s Death Record shows mother’s maiden name was Amos.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Fred & Barbara Amos Denzer.

children of Thomas and Damaris (Ashbrook) Amos

I have been told that there is a book called, "The Children of Mr. Soma" outlining the Amos family but that this family is from the Maryland area. I just got information on my husbands G-Grandparents but do not know if this book would help me. Would someone who has access to the book let me know if the following people are included:

Here is what little I know. Thomas Amos was born May 22, 1822 in Rush County, Indiana and died December 28, 1908 in Indiana. He married Damaris C. Ashbrook Thurman on October 1, 1843 in Clinton County, Indiana the daughter of William Ashbrook and Mary Chenoweth. She was born May 22, 1822 in Jefferson County, Kentucky and died January 9, 1910 in Clinton County, Indiana. Thomas Amos shows up in the 1870 Sugar Creek Township, Clinton County, census. I have that their children wer Elijah Amos, John William Amos, Mary Martha Amos (my connection), Minerva Jane Amos, Sarah Ann Amos and Milton M. Amos.

Thanks for checking. If they are in the book, I would consider purchasing it; if not, I'm off on another search.

Joy Cota Hallof
Looking for Relatives

I am looking for the families of Peter Hunter, Campbell County, VA, who married Lelia or Vilea Alice Burnett, Bedford County, VA, in 1896. Peter's mother's name was Betty. He was 26 at the time of their marriage and she was 16. I have located Alice's Burnett family in Lynchburg, VA, but would still like to know more about Peter. I have their original marriage license.

Somewhere between that marriage and 1932, Alice married J.C. Amos. J.C. Amos and Alice adopted my father, born as Roy Lee Patsel, April 3, 1928. They adopted him 1932, in Roanoke, VA, and changed his name to Benjamin Francis Amos. We have page 5 of the adoption papers which has the mother's name on it. Alice Burnett Amos settled in Augusta, GA, and never returned to Virginia. J.C. Amos is believed to have died in route to Augusta. They were an elderly couple. Alice was around 52 when she adopted Ben Amos, and J.C. from pictures looked several years older than she was.

Any information you can share concerning the Patsels, Hunters, Amos' , or Burnetts, will be greatly appreciated.

Alice Amos Ware
HisinGA@aol.com

I am searching for my uncle, Kenneth H. Amos, born approximately 1931 in Roanoke, VA. He is the son of Otha Amos and Rosa McGee. He has a son, Kenny. Our family last saw him right after the death of his father in December 1966. He was, at the time, living in Washington, DC. Hopefully, he is still living. We would very much like to contact him or his son, Kenny. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Amos - North Carolina to Tennessee to Kentucky

My GGG Grandfather was Pleasant H. Amos born in Tennessee about 1835. He is not found on census records until 1860, when he was living in Cumberland County, Kentucky. In 1870, he is found living in Wayne County, Kentucky. In 1880, he is found living in Albany, Kentucky. In 1900, he is found living in Martin County, Indiana.

He married a Mary Jane or Haley Jane (depending on the census record).

Their children are Charles Pleasant, Sarah Jane, Angelissa, Charity, and Dora Ann. On the 1860 Census there is a Sarah Raines age 70, born in Virginia living with them.

According to the census records Pleasant's father was born in North Carolina. I am trying to find Pleasant's father. There are several lines from Rockingham and Stokes County, North Carolina and I hope that someone has a Amos from one of these areas that moved to Tennessee.

This is a brick wall. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Ancestors of Michael Amos

We are looking for the ancestors of Michael Amos, who immigrated to the United States (OH) in 1837, from Germany. Family history says they came to the US on a ship named "The Wild Lion" in 1837. We have a good portion of the family since immigration, but are looking for history before this time. There were also about 4 Michaels in a row, that were not listed as SR, JR, etc, so we think there may have been other first or middle names that we have no info on. You can rely to Beth or Dennis Amos as bhappyapp@cs.com, or write to us at 29734 CR 1, Granger, IN 46530 Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Does anyone know what state the early James Amos of Hart county KY, (Barren County) came from that was born about 1740? Was he a possible descendant of the Maryland Amos family at Mt. Soma. Would William Amos of England born about 1690 have been his grandfather? I am also wondering if William's son, James, was James of Hart County, KY, father? Thanks for any information you might have.

I am looking for any info on the original Amos family who moved from Kent, England, to the Orangeville-Credit Forkes area near Brampton and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I have plenty of names of the first generation of the family who moved here from England but would like to go back a few more generations in England. This is not as easy as it sounds since my gr. grandfather's father was a Fifield and it was his mother had the surname "Amos". I don't know either of the parents first names.

If anyone can help or would like to have info on the first generation who moved to the Orangeville area please contact me.

Chris Amos

I am looking for info on my ggrandad Thomas Amos as it is believed he went on to have two more sons after my grandad and his sister. My grandads name is James Amos. My grandad lost all contact with his father when he was young and we believe his mother died when he was young her name was Evelyn Richards. We assume that he re-married and had then had more children. We are not sure wether they would be aware of my grandad and his sister. My grandad was born in 1931. My grandad married Jean Laxton in 1951.

AMOS IN ENGLAND

I am looking for anything anyone can tell me about John Amos born in England. This is what I know. The 1881 Census shows him living in Kings Norton,Worcester, at 24 years old, and working as a telegraph clerk. This census shows that he was born in Birmingham, Warwick. He married Emily Leadbeater December 23 1883, in Dudley, Worchester. The marriage license says he was 25 years old and Charles Amos (a farmer) was his father. On the 1901 Census they say he was 40 years old, a telephone wireman and was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. He and his family were living in Yorkshire then.
