Thank you for posting such interesting and valuable information on the possible origin of the Ancira surname. I can at least say add one thing: the descendants of Don Diego Perez that I have known well did not look like Spaniards; they had a very distinctive look as if they were from the Eastern Mediterranean: they had wavy dark hair, a single, thick eyebrow over their eyes, and soft green-hazel eyes. In fact, these looks earned them the nickname they were known by: "Los Tecolotes," and the ranch in which they were raised was officially known as "Las Tres Marias" but unofficially it was known as "El Rancho de los Tecolotes."

Re: Ancira surname - Info

"Ancira" is the ancient spelling and pronunciation of 'Ankara' which is located in Turkey. After the expulsion of 1492 many jewish people left for portugal, italy and turkey. However hints of the jewish origin of the family name arise from the fact that in the late 1600's and early 1700's our ancestors family name was a hebrew name: 'Perez'...as in Diego Perez de Ancira. There are some early indications of a Perez de Ancira being in Queretaro as early as 1650, which makes sense as it was a mining community and in 1690's the family established themselves in Bustamante and Villaldama (other mining communities) that were founded in the late 1600's..moving in the late 18th century to Real de Sabinas, Monterrey and parts beyond.
Another indication of the Portuguese connection is found in Porto, Portugal where in the middle of the Armenian district which was established in the 15th century after the fall of Constantinople there is a street named "Rua De Ancira".
So did Diego's progenitors come to the new world from Turkey after first leaving Spain as it was speculated to me as a child or were his progenitor's part of the armenian christians that left Constantinople and the vicinity due to the fall to the Ottoman empire and who obtained special permission from the city of Porto to settle there?
These are the questions that need to be answered and in a long reply I can tell you that 'Ancira' may not necessarily be Spanish but a reference to a location and that the original name was Perez...which is hebrew.
Keep sharing....I hope we find the boat they came on.

Hi,

Does anyone have any info on this surname. I just came across this surname in my genealogy. I have a Gertrudis Ancira that married a Jose Javier Saenz in Salinas Victoria
about 1773. I am wondering if it is a Spanish surname,
etc.

The surname seems to have entered NE Mexico about 1700.

Regards,

Esther

The Anciras originated in Nuevo Leon. The first ANcira was Clemente Perez Ancira who was from Mexico CIty. He came about 1710 or so. He married a Villarreal. Had two sons and his prodigy spread from the valle de Salinas to Vallecillio and
Lapazos and Villaldama and Coahuila North like Musquiz and Nava, etc.

I am looking for information regarding my father's side of the family, his name was Robert Ancira. My given name was Ancira-Gonzalez. He was born in Bexar County around 1911 but lived most his life in Mexico City, I think. His father's name was Jose and his mother Angelina. He had a brother Raymond and a sister Ville. I never got to know him and would like to learn what I can from his roots. I learned fairly recently I am not an only child, I have 4 sisters somewhere and I don't have a clue as to what their names could be or if I would even be accepted after all this time, but I got the courage to post this message.

It is nice to have some concurence in what and where the family came from. Do you have any records that indicate when the family first came to mexico or perhaps the turkish/portugese connection??

Miguel,

Thanks for your reply. I guessed that they must be a Sephardic family because they married with the Villarreals.
I guess that kind of clitches it for me. The family dropped the Perez in succeeding generations and just went by Ancira.
I know they family migrated from Mexico City about 1700 or so. I don't know how long they were in Mexico City though.
It is interesting. It is possible that the family originally migrated to Spain from Turkey and then left for the world sometime after the expulsion in 1492. They could have gone to Portugal or the Canary Islands first like many did.

Thanks again,

Esther

Ancira or Ancyra is not a surname from Spain. It is a city in present day Turkey. The word Ancyra means Anchor in Greek. I assume that the Perez family went to Ancyra after their expulsion from Spain in 1492 and entered Mexico surnamed Perez de Ancira because they were from (de) Ancyra
